Impacting habitat and biodiversity from Florida to Mississippi to southeastern Canada<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Climate change will wipe out parts of North American <strong>wetlands<\/strong> and disrupt their seasonal regimes. This is the hypothesis put forward by a group of US researchers. The investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-45286-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in the journal Nature Communications, involved scientists from the <strong>Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)<\/strong>, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Michigan, who developed a new predictive model. However, in their current form, a Pacific Northwest statement explains, these models \u201cusually represent wetland hydrology in oversimplified ways, resulting in <strong>low confidence<\/strong> of their projection of wetland evolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To solve this problem, the researchers tried to improve the model by <strong>calibrating the parameters<\/strong> to provide a more reliable and accurate picture.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe refined model <strong>simulates the wetlands<\/strong> and validates against satellite observations. With the refined model, researchers further found the wetlands over North America will be significantly affected by climate change under future scenarios.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7odbYYRM9l\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/land-degradation-lesotho\/\">Land degradation is threatening wetlands in Lesotho<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Land degradation is threatening wetlands in Lesotho&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/land-degradation-lesotho\/embed\/#?secret=v4W9785xaI#?secret=7odbYYRM9l\" data-secret=\"7odbYYRM9l\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The impact of climate<\/h5>\n<p>The improved tool, which also takes into account the physical mechanisms of flooding, shows how <strong>global warming<\/strong> is able to deeply influence the components of the hydroclimate, thus modifying wetlands. This survey, the study reports, \u201creveals <strong>projected changes<\/strong> in wetland characteristics over North America from 25\u00b0 to 53\u00b0 North under two climate scenarios using a state-of-the-science ESM.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In detail, \u2018\u201cAt the continental scale, annual wetland area <strong>decreases by ~10%<\/strong> (6\u201314%) under the high emission scenario, but spatiotemporal changes vary, reaching up to \u00b150 percent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Growing emissions, the authors explain, increase the influence of temperatures in comparison with precipitation. In this scenario, they add, wetlands <strong>dry up substantially<\/strong> during the summer season. These areas also play an irreplaceable role in the hydrology of the landscape and the water cycle, producing favourable effects on the climate.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over the years, however, many regions of the planet, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-project-bohemian-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including Europe<\/a>, have been affected by their <strong>degradation<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A phenomenon that has at the same time stimulated various <strong>initiatives to restore<\/strong> their natural habitats.
