This is reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41612-024-00678-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> conducted by the University of Sheffield. The investigation, explains a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/news\/cutting-farm-nitrous-oxide-emissions-helps-climate-and-ozone-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the British university, was based on the application of a prediction model capable of simulating the effects of a limited nitrate release.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wfAJIx9Lrv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/\">Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/embed\/#?secret=oYUdR2JYVp#?secret=wfAJIx9Lrv\" data-secret=\"wfAJIx9Lrv\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The role of ozone<\/h5>\n<p>Surface ozone (O3) is a pollutant that is produced in the atmosphere through the action of sunlight and from certain chemical precursors. These include nitrites and nitrates, i.e. nitrogen oxides that can be released mainly from agricultural soils. These compounds, in other words, <strong>contribute to the formation of ozone<\/strong> itself, which, at the lowest levels of the earth&#8217;s atmosphere, promotes pollution and the greenhouse effect.<\/p>\n<p>It is not surprising, therefore, that the reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/local-lockdowns-brought-fast-global-ozone-reductions-nasa-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leads<\/a> to an improvement in air quality, as well as reducing the risks of water and environmental contamination. The problem, however, is that ozone itself simultaneously performs an <strong>essential function in the stratosphere<\/strong> where its presence ensures the absorption of harmful ultraviolet rays and thus preserving life on Earth.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"syKa8clZNs\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-soil-invertebrates\/\">Excess nitrogen also impacts soil invertebrates and insects<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Excess nitrogen also impacts soil invertebrates and insects&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-soil-invertebrates\/embed\/#?secret=ogAltxz1oM#?secret=syKa8clZNs\" data-secret=\"syKa8clZNs\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The action of nitrogen oxides<\/h5>\n<p>First observed in the 1970s, the depletion of the ozone layer and the opening of the infamous breach in it caused particular concern, leading governments to take measures <strong>to limit the production of CFC<\/strong> (or chlorofluorocarbon) gases judged to be the main culprits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since then, the situation <strong>has improved<\/strong> to the point that the ozone layer continues to experience <strong>a gradual recovery<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But balances, as we know, can be tricky. Indeed, the Sheffield researchers point out, &#8220;There is an international focus on developing N2O reduction strategies to stop soil from releasing nitrous oxide into the air but there have been concerns that <strong>cutting these emissions might slow down the recovery<\/strong> of the ozone layer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>No impact on ozone layer restoration<\/h5>\n<p>The researchers&#8217; study, however, provided reassuring answers by highlighting \u201cthe dual benefits of N2O reduction strategies which can provide substantial <strong>climate benefits<\/strong> by cooling the planet from reducing N2O, protecting the O3 layer and hence not impacting harmful UV rays, and <strong>environmental<\/strong> benefits by reducing nitrate <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaching_(chemistry)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaching<\/a> into water bodies and natural habitats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In summary, the researchers point out, certain &#8220;Farming methods can reduce nitrous oxide emissions <strong>without slowing down the overall recovery of the ozone<\/strong> layer.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The results, in particular, \u201cshowed that a feasible use of fertilisers with nitrification inhibitors and enhanced rock weathering (a tecnique which <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consists<\/a> of forcibly crushing rocks and spreading their dust on the ground in order to foster CO2 sequestration, ed.) <strong>could cut agricultural N2O emissions by about 25 per cent<\/strong> without hindering ozone recovery.&#8221; The study, the authors conclude, offers further support for policies to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and the adoption of consistent
