This phenomenon constitutes \u201ca major concern to our country\u2019s ecosystem health, carbon storage and biodiversity.&#8221; This is the alarm raised by researchers at the <strong>University of Melbourne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The images of burning trees, they explain, affect our consciousness in a special way. But many problems, at the same time, also occur far from our eyes in those \u2018hidden\u2019 forest spaces that have always played a fundamental role for the ecosystem.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KHbMa5tIcO\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-fires-us\/\">Drought alters post-fire recovery in the U.S.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Drought alters post-fire recovery in the U.S.&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-fires-us\/embed\/#?secret=5K0FZ3zGNa#?secret=KHbMa5tIcO\" data-secret=\"KHbMa5tIcO\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The importance of the understorey<\/h5>\n<p>Tree crowns, as we know, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/canopies-soil-nutrients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are attracting particular attention<\/a> from scientists. The layer of vegetation formed by the tallest plants receives most of the light and stores most of the carbon. But in forests, scientists say, there is actually much more, starting with the <strong>understorey<\/strong> &#8211; made up of all the trees, shrubs and lower plants growing under the canopy &#8211; where the majority of <strong>plant diversity<\/strong> is found.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018The soil beneath that is where the \u201chidden\u201d understorey resides,\u2019 the researchers write in an article released by the University of Melbourne. Here, they add, \u201cthe understorey species\u2019 <strong>seeds<\/strong> lie dormant in the soil seedbank, sometimes for decades \u2013 waiting for <strong>their opportunity to germinate<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <strong>seed bank<\/strong> in the soil represents the heritage of the plants of the undergrowth as well as a new source of plant growth. \u201cThink of the soil seedbank as an insurance reserve of plant diversity in the event of something calamitous happening to the living understorey plants,&#8221; the authors write. \u201cIn a world of frequent severe fires, that calamity is becoming a reality\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"efRZiBgke6\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-wildfires-recovery\/\">Soil, wildfires and recovery: how much do we know?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil, wildfires and recovery: how much do we know?&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-wildfires-recovery\/embed\/#?secret=X5Xu5hLGVn#?secret=efRZiBgke6\" data-secret=\"efRZiBgke6\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Wildfires&#8217; impact<\/h5>\n<p>In two separate studies published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378112723008617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2571-6255\/7\/4\/148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April<\/a> this year, Australian researchers analysed the response of understorey forests to fire. Looking at different types of forests &#8211; from low-lying shrublands to mountain forests &#8211; the scientists found a <strong>change in the composition of plant communities<\/strong>. In general, the increased frequency of severe fires has led to a decrease in biodiversity at both lower and higher altitudes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Morevoer, : &#8220;With more fire, there\u2019s a shift towards <strong>grassy and herb-dominated<\/strong> understories, particularly at higher elevations \u2013 as many shrub species fail to cope with <strong>frequent fire<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With regard to the strategies developed by the plants, it is then noted that some shrubs that survived the fire reached reproductive maturity faster, producing seeds that remained in the soil for a long time and others that germinated in response to the fire. In the USA, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-analysis-prevent-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>, the area affected by fires each year <strong>has more than tripled<\/strong> in the last four decades. Europe is no exception. According to EU Commission calculations, the fire season in 2019 and 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/wildfires-long-term-damages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was longer<\/a> than in the past, while the number of fires and the area burned <strong>have exceeded the average<\/strong> of the last twelve years. In this context, changes in plant biodiversity are a problem for the entire ecosystem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When ecosystems become dominated by new or different kinds of vegetation, there are consequences for the <strong>animals that rely on that habitat<\/strong>, and more broadly, consequences for the <strong>flammability of these systems<\/strong>,&#8221; the authors continue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The scientists therefore suggest that affected areas should be restored not only by including tree species that are already present but also important understorey
