In some Chinese farmland, the presence of the substance has increased by 60 per cent<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">di Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Biochar, an organic product widely used in agriculture as a soil amendment, can promote <strong>carbon sequestration<\/strong> by improving soil aggregation. This is supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0301479724010284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by a group of researchers from <strong>Shanxi Agricultural University<\/strong> in Taigu and <strong>South China Normal University<\/strong> in Guangzhou.<\/p>\n<p>This soil amendant &#8220;has been widely applied in agricultural ecosystems to improve <strong>soil physicochemical properties<\/strong>,\u201d the study explains.\u201cHowever, the underlying mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration by soil aggregation with biochar addition are not well understood at a large scale\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GCSKZatfJk\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-soil-pollution\/\">China launches a new initiative against soil pollution<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;China launches a new initiative against soil pollution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-soil-pollution\/embed\/#?secret=T2uwRGaGan#?secret=GCSKZatfJk\" data-secret=\"GCSKZatfJk\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Biochar<\/h5>\n<p>Biochar results from the <strong>thermochemical conversion of biomass<\/strong> through so-called slow pyrolysis. In short, when the material is heated at low temperatures, it decomposes and turns into the finished product. This product, in particular, is characterised by a higher carbon content and a lower oxygen and hydrogen content than the original material.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The substance, especially when integrated with the traditional <strong>composting<\/strong> process, can be used to increase soil fertility. But also, in certain cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/alaska-biochar-soil-copper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to reduce the presence of heavy metals<\/a> in the soil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Its use, in other words, helps reduce dependence on the use of fertilisers and synthetic chemicals in agriculture. In addition to the general improvement of soil characteristics. Its positive impact on carbon sequestration, on the other hand, is particularly linked to its ability <strong>to strengthen soil aggregation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"YDuevbWcuy\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sand-cellulose-china-desert\/\">China is fighting desertification by adding cellulose to sand<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;China is fighting desertification by adding cellulose to sand&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sand-cellulose-china-desert\/embed\/#?secret=P13fGBpO7r#?secret=YDuevbWcuy\" data-secret=\"YDuevbWcuy\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A meta-analysis of 45 previous studies<\/h5>\n<p>To verify this point, the authors conducted a meta-analysis by collecting <strong>2,335 measurements from 45 studies<\/strong>. This made it possible to quantify the impact of the addition of the soil improver on the formation of aggregates in the soil, their stability and carbon concentration. Indeed: the use of the substance, the researchers explained, had clear and measurable positive consequences.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Biochar addition markedly enhanced <strong>the proportions of macro-aggregates<\/strong> and aggregate stability,&#8221; the study states.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, &#8220;Biochar overall stimulated macro-aggregate proportions <strong>(14.1%\u201321.9%)<\/strong>. Soil aggregate-associated organic carbon (OC) indicated a significantly increasement by biochar addition, which was attributed to direct and indirect inputs of OC from biochar and organic residues, respectively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"rgFKeqoXsJ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/alaska-biochar-soil-copper\/\">Alaska researchers use biochar to decontaminate soil from copper<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Alaska researchers use biochar to decontaminate soil from copper&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/alaska-biochar-soil-copper\/embed\/#?secret=MKZ3OHjyf4#?secret=rgFKeqoXsJ\" data-secret=\"rgFKeqoXsJ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Biochar increases carbon sequestration<\/h5>\n<p>The effects on aggregate concentration are reflected in increased <strong>sequestration<\/strong>. &#8220;Collectively, our synthetic analysis emphasized that biochar promoted the SOC sequestration by improving soil aggregation in agricultural ecosystems of China,&#8221; the authors explain. The amendant &#8220;generally increased OC content in aggregates <strong>by 5.2%\u201360.5%<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Climate and <strong>atmospheric<\/strong> <strong>conditions<\/strong>, i.e. average annual temperature and rainfall frequency, specific characteristics of the substance used (such as the ratio of carbon to nitrogen content as well as pH), the practices used in adding the soil conditioner, and different agronomic conditions including soil, intensity of cultivation, fertilisation methods, and type of crop, would also affect the sequestration of the element.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Biochar promotes the formation of soil aggregates and, with them, carbon sequestration, a research explains.
