Central Asia and North Africa are the hardest hit areas<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The degradation of natural grasslands poses &#8220;a severe threat to humanity\u2019s food supply and the wellbeing or survival of billions of people.&#8221; This is the message issued by the <strong>&#8220;Global Land Outlook Thematic Report on Rangelands and Pastoralists&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/news-stories\/press-releases\/silent-demise-vast-rangelands-threatens-climate-food-wellbeing-billions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (<strong>UNCCD<\/strong>) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>The problem, experts explain, affects up to 50 percent of these territories and is shown by phenomena such as &#8220;diminished soil fertility and nutrients, <strong>erosion<\/strong>, salinization, alkalinization, and soil compaction inhibiting plant growth.&#8221; Among the causes are land conversion, overgrazing, abandonment of the territories themselves and mining activities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83d\udea8 Our new report reveals the demise of rangelands which threatens well-being of billions<\/p>\n<p>With up to 50% of rangelands degraded, 1\/6 of our food supply and 1\/3 of carbon reservoir are at risk. Report urges restoration, better management and protection of pastoralism <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UNited4Land?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UNited4Land<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UN Land and Drought (@UNCCD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNCCD\/status\/1792813939115376940?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 21, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Extending over 54 percent of the earth&#8217;s surface<\/h5>\n<p>The category of rangelands includes mainly natural prairies used by livestock and wildlife, as well as savannas, shrublands, wetlands, tundra and deserts. All together, the UN explains, &#8220;these lands constitute<strong> 54% of all land cover<\/strong>, account for one sixth of <strong>global food production<\/strong> and represent nearly one third of the planet\u2019s <strong>carbon<\/strong> reservoir.&#8221; On these environments, moreover, depend-especially in developing countries-the fate of <strong>two billion<\/strong> pastoralists, ranchers and farmers, with particularly high percentages in some areas of the Planet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In many West African states, for example, &#8220;livestock production <strong>employs 80 percent of the population<\/strong>.&#8221; While in Central Asia, &#8220;<strong>60% of the land area<\/strong> is used as grazing rangelands, with livestock herding supporting nearly one third of the region\u2019s population.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In all this, however, the report notes, there is also a paradox. &#8220;Ironically,&#8221; says the organization, &#8220;efforts to increase food security and productivity by converting rangelands to crop production in mostly arid regions have resulted in degraded land and <strong>lower agricultural yields<\/strong>.&#8221; A result also linked to &#8220;weak and ineffective governance,&#8221; &#8220;poorly implemented policies and regulations,&#8221; and &#8220;the lack of investment in rangeland communities and sustainable production models&#8221; for pastures.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aKl8iwXRjS\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-desertification-new-index\/\">A new index details the decline of desertification in China<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;A new index details the decline of desertification in China&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-desertification-new-index\/embed\/#?secret=XZp5DUlUus#?secret=aKl8iwXRjS\" data-secret=\"aKl8iwXRjS\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The degradation of rangelands has been underestimated for years<\/h5>\n<p>Compiled with contributions from more than 60 experts from over 40 countries, the report s<strong>harply revised upward estimates<\/strong> of pasture degradation. Previous estimates, which reported the phenomenon as extending over about a quarter of these lands, would have in fact underestimated &#8220;significantly the actual loss of health and productivity&#8221; on a global scale. Degradation, the new study argues, could actually affect up to <strong>half of the Planet&#8217;s grasslands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Rangelands are often poorly understood and a <strong>lack of reliable data<\/strong> undermines the sustainable management of their immense value in food provisioning and climate regulation,&#8221; the report warns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bXISDCa9UNU?si=rIfufmAT0KQeXkeD\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h5>\n<h5>Asia and North Africa have the most problematic situation<\/h5>\n<p>Among the hardest hit areas is, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/chinese-seabuckthorn-desertification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notoriously<\/a>, <strong>Central Asia<\/strong>, where desertification, some observers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/site\/assets\/uploads\/2018\/02\/WGIIAR5-Chap24_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have argued<\/a>, is advancing at an increasing pace, threatening the security of an <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/central-asia-risks-becoming-a-hyperarid-desert-in-the-near-future-148703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> half a billion inhabitants. Here, the report notes, &#8220;privatisation and agricultural industrialization left herders abandoned and dependent on insufficient natural resources causing widespread degradation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Also critical is the situation in <strong>North Africa<\/strong>, one of the driest regions in the world, where, &#8220;the impact of climate change in one of the world\u2019s driest regions is pushing pastoralists into poverty and degrading the rangelands on which they rely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LIFDnXIzA9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-anti-desertification-strategy\/\">&#8220;China must change direction in its anti-desertification strategy&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;&#8220;China must change direction in its anti-desertification strategy&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-anti-desertification-strategy\/embed\/#?secret=NWuPYc9c8O#?secret=LIFDnXIzA9\" data-secret=\"LIFDnXIzA9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A new approach<\/h5>\n<p>To stabilize, restore and manage grasslands, the study notes, a number of <strong>strategies<\/strong> need to be adopted. First, for example, climate mitigation strategies need to be integrated with sustainable grassland management to increase carbon sequestration and storage. In addition, there is a need to avoid or at least<strong> reduce land conversion<\/strong> and to adopt conservation measures even outside protected areas to protect biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to this is the need to adopt and support pasture-based practices that help mitigate damage to the health of these lands. Promoting, finally, &#8220;<strong>supportive policies<\/strong>, full people\u2019s participation and flexible management and governance systems to boost the services that rangelands and pastoralists provide to the whole society.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A snapshot from the latest UNCCD Report: degradation affects up to 50 percent of rangelands, twice as much as previous estimates.
