It is not surprising, then, that combating pests that attack <strong>pollinators<\/strong> is a priority for operators. To this end, a deep understanding of the mechanisms that characterize the interaction between bees themselves and their natural enemies appears crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-44915-x#Sec2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers at the <strong>University of Alberta<\/strong>, Canada, who have provided new information on the actions of the Varroa destructor, a particularly dangerous mite that is responsible for an estimated 3<strong>0 to 40 percent<\/strong> of the country&#8217;s pollinator colonies that are lost annually.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"83wzL6lQPi\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bees-climate-pollination-crops\/\">Climate change anticipates bee awakening putting crops at risk<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Climate change anticipates bee awakening putting crops at risk&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bees-climate-pollination-crops\/embed\/#?secret=ZH2vSGeY3C#?secret=83wzL6lQPi\" data-secret=\"83wzL6lQPi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Feeding varies over the life cycle of bees<\/h5>\n<p>To effectively control the action of the mite, the researchers remarked in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/folio\/2024\/03\/new-research-could-help-honeybees-fight-off-their-worst-enemy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the university, it is necessary to know when and what the mite feeds on during the bee&#8217;s life cycle. In the past, Varroa was thought to take up the bee&#8217;s <strong>hemolymph<\/strong> or blood throughout its development. In 2019, however, a University of Maryland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/01\/190114161137.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> had revealed that the mite feeds on a layer of fat present in the bee just below the exoskeleton. The research, however, had focused on adult bees.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nothing, until now, was known, however, about the mite&#8217;s behavior with <strong>pupae<\/strong>, that is, bees in the post larval stage prelude to their emergence from the cell.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Studying the interaction between the parasites and the insects, a team of scholars led by <strong>Olav<\/strong> <strong>Rueppell<\/strong>, a researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta, has shown that at that particular time in the life cycle it is the hemolymph that feeds the mites. The United Nations, not surprisingly, has chosen to dedicate a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/bee-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day<\/a> to these precious insects that is celebrated worldwide on <strong>May 20 <\/strong>every year.\u00a0An occasion, in short, to celebrate the magnitude of their contribution while raising awareness of the dangers of downsizing their presence.<\/p>\n<p>Bees, both domestic and wild, play a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/intelligenza-artificiale-api-biodiversita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crucial role<\/a> in pollinating 70 percent of the Planet&#8217;s plant species and contribute <strong>35 percent of global food production<\/strong>. The loss of these pollinators, fostered by critical factors such as climate change, disease, pesticide use and loss of natural habitats, would inevitably lead to a <strong>drastic reduction in plant biodiversity<\/strong>. And it would significantly increase <strong>agricultural production costs<\/strong> because of the need to resort to artificial pollination
