Despite this, researchers now say, some of their characteristics could prove particularly valuable. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-3298\/11\/3\/45\">research<\/a> from <strong>Florida International University<\/strong> published in the journal <em>Environments<\/em>, for example, these same <strong>bacteria<\/strong> could even be used as natural fertilizers especially in iron-poor soils. Here the authors implemented <strong>four different treatments<\/strong> to evaluate the performance of cyanobacterial biofertilizers under the geographic and subtropical conditions of South Florida. In detail, the researchers treated one part of the soil with the algae-based biofertilizer alone, another with a chemical fertilizer, and a third with a 50-50 mixture of both. Finally, they left intact a space of soil that took on the role of a control area.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our results indicate that total biofertilizer (TB) application and total synthetic (TS) application produced about <strong>29 to 33% higher<\/strong> SPAD (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2311-7524\/9\/12\/1290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soil plant analytical development<\/a>) readings than the control&#8221;, scientists say.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vQoxKVAlAq\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-testing-reduces-fertilizer-spending\/\">Deep soil testing reduces fertilizer spending<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deep soil testing reduces fertilizer spending&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-testing-reduces-fertilizer-spending\/embed\/#?secret=i2sUy77jVl#?secret=vQoxKVAlAq\" data-secret=\"vQoxKVAlAq\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A crucial role in iron intake<\/h5>\n<p>In particular: &#8220;The absence of interveinal chlorosis (yellowing of leaves) in the TB and half and half (50% biofertilizer + 50% synthetic fertilizer) treatments suggests that the cyanobacteria-based biofertilizer had a role in supplying one of the critical micronutrients, iron (Fe). Analysis of the biofertilizer indicated 2000 ppm <strong>Fe content<\/strong>, which directly supports our observation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, &#8220;average plant height (61 cm), yield (130 gm per pot), and crop biomass (67 gm) productions were significantly higher in TB than in the control&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Als8lHRQdS\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-dependence-phosphorus\/\">Global agriculture must reduce its dependence on phosphorus<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Global agriculture must reduce its dependence on phosphorus&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-dependence-phosphorus\/embed\/#?secret=nQh3kSET5f#?secret=Als8lHRQdS\" data-secret=\"Als8lHRQdS\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div>\n<p><b>Cyanobacteria also produce economic benefits<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The study, in short, &#8220;documents the potential of cyanobacteria biofertilizers as a viable option compared to synthetic fertilizers for sustainable crop production and <strong>soil health<\/strong> <strong>improvement<\/strong>.&#8221; The availability of a new iron-rich natural resource should translate to farmers in <strong>reduced costs<\/strong> associated with cultivation, an International University <a href=\"https:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2024\/water-pollutant-could-be-soil-savior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> says. Expecially in Florida, where agricultural soils notoriously suffer from some shortage of the element.<\/p>\n<p>According to the authors, the statement continues, replacing synthetic fertilizers with cyanobacteria &#8220;can save them <strong>up to 15 percent<\/strong> in production costs without any loss of crops allowing farmers to stay competitive.&#8221; The use of cyanobacteria as a biofertilizer &#8220;can improve <strong>water quality<\/strong> by reducing nutrient runoff into surface water systems&#8221;. The use of alternative substances, in fact, appears particularly useful in countering the problems associated with the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers. These are well-known to be made by an energy-intensive process and are characterized by a <strong>high impact in terms of emissions<\/strong>. To the point of being a serious obstacle to achieving <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-fertilizers-emissions-climate\/\">climate neutrality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Their long-term use also contributes to the gradual depletion of <strong>nutrient<\/strong> availability in the soil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to FAO estimates in 2021, the latest year for which final data are available, the Planet&#8217;s soils <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/food-agriculture-statistics\/data-release\/data-release-detail\/en\/c\/1644432\/\">absorbed<\/a> <strong>109 million tons<\/strong> of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, 46 million tons of similar phosphorus products, and 40 million tons of potassium-based substances. A phenomenon that parallels the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-network\/\">growing use of<\/a> pesticides, which grew by 75 percent on a global scale in the
