This is suggested by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/1365-2664.14561\">survey<\/a> conducted by the <strong>Campinas State University<\/strong>, Brazil. The findings are particularly useful in providing guidance to experts engaged in the reforestation of the <strong>Cerrado<\/strong>, the savanna located in the center of the country and known for <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/agricoltura-semi-tradizionali\/\">its rich biodiversity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Statistics made available in January 2024 show that while deforestation in the Amazon fell by half in 2023, it <strong>increased 43%<\/strong> in the Cerrado, the Brazilian savanna,&#8221; explains a statement released by <strong>FAPESP<\/strong>, a public research foundation based in S\u00e3o Paulo. Previous studies &#8220;already highlighted the urgency of combating destruction of the biome. However, <strong>it is not enough to defend<\/strong> what remains: restoration is also needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GRD42ahcS9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-landowners-amnesty\/\">Landowner amnesty has hampered land restoration in the Amazon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Landowner amnesty has hampered land restoration in the Amazon&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-landowners-amnesty\/embed\/#?secret=1cG1s0M8SC#?secret=GRD42ahcS9\" data-secret=\"GRD42ahcS9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The problem with invasive species<\/h5>\n<p>The problem, however, is that regenerating what existed is not an easy task given that areas subjected to this type of intervention typically experience constant <strong>colonization by exotic plants<\/strong>, i.e., those invasive species that are not native to that biome.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Many ongoing restoration projects aim to produce <strong>rapid plant cover<\/strong> in the area concerned, but in our study, we showed this isn\u2019t always the best strategy,&#8221; <strong>Ana C<\/strong>. <strong>C.<\/strong> <strong>Oliveira<\/strong>, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo and co-author of the study, explained, quoted by FAPESP.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Any restoration initiative ,&#8221; she added, &#8220;must be based on a profound understanding of the ecology of the ecosystem to be restored. Unfortunately, that\u2019s not usually the case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ZORd9MYQ0F\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-trees-forest-extinction\/\">Atlantic Forest, Brazil, 82% of tree species could disappear<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Atlantic Forest, Brazil, 82% of tree species could disappear&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-trees-forest-extinction\/embed\/#?secret=cyjhARCaS0#?secret=ZORd9MYQ0F\" data-secret=\"ZORd9MYQ0F\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The role of biodiversity<\/h5>\n<p>According to Oliveira, greater biodiversity would promote resistance to invasion by non-native plants, &#8220;probably owing to competition for resources in the <strong>nutrient-poor, acidic soil<\/strong> <strong>of the Cerrado<\/strong>.&#8221; As previous studies highlight, communities with greater diversity tend to have lower levels of available resources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This <strong>penalizes exotic species<\/strong> that typically need large amounts of resources to sustain their rapid growth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Plants in any environment survive and grow by means of a range of <strong>ecological strategies<\/strong> associated with the anatomy and morphology of their leaves, stems and roots: these characteristics are known as functional attributes,&#8221; explained <strong>Guilherme G. Mazzochini<\/strong>, a researcher at the University of Campinas and co-author of the study. And it is precisely these characteristics that the authors focused on.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ZBjUZx4gv7\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/clima-a-rischio-biodiversita-brasile-orientale\/\">Climate change puts 40 percent of biodiversity in eastern Brazil at risk<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Climate change puts 40 percent of biodiversity in eastern Brazil at risk&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/clima-a-rischio-biodiversita-brasile-orientale\/embed\/#?secret=TOz7uG9JOg#?secret=ZBjUZx4gv7\" data-secret=\"ZBjUZx4gv7\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>In the research, conducted in an abandoned pasture area now included in Chapada dos Veados National Park in west-central <strong>Brazil<\/strong>, the researchers sought to understand &#8220;how native grass communities composed by species with different ecological strategies affect the invasion success,&#8221; the study explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that <strong>greater above- and below-ground functional diversity<\/strong> reduces exotic species invasion,&#8221; they explain. &#8220;We also evaluated whether the isolated effects of native species on invasion were positive or negative.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers then installed <strong>302 two-by-two-meter plots<\/strong> where they sowed eight different native species in combination to create composite communities with different ecological strategies. <strong> They then quantified the above-ground biomass<\/strong> of exotic plants that regularly recurred as a measure of invasion.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"EX2tyARUfK\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/forest-fragmentation-shape-trees\/\">In the Amazon, forest fragmentation changes the shape of trees<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;In the Amazon, forest fragmentation changes the shape of trees&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/forest-fragmentation-shape-trees\/embed\/#?secret=51wvfMK68p#?secret=EX2tyARUfK\" data-secret=\"EX2tyARUfK\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Greater diversity means fewer invasive species<\/h5>\n<p>Plots sown with only one native species had <strong>3.6 times more exotic biomass<\/strong> than their counterparts with eight species, the researchers say. Determinant, they explain, were some elements such as greater functional diversity in terms of plant height and specific root length. The <strong>height diversity<\/strong> of the native species, in particular, appears to limit the amount of sunlight that reaches the invasive species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roots<\/strong>, in any case, also play an essential role. According to the researchers, monoculture plots had, on average, <strong>4.7 times more<\/strong> exotic biomass than plots with greater length diversity at the root level. In light of all this, the study notes, the research findings &#8220;highlight the need for careful selection of the species to be used in restoration
