This is reported in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-024-01383-8\">study<\/a> conducted by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the <strong>University of California San Diego<\/strong>. The investigation, conducted with the help of American researchers from Stanford University and Indonesian scientists from Tanjungpura University, targets human activities conducted in these peculiar environments, which are known to be <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/\">important<\/a> carbon <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/\">sinks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8EchSOhU6B\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/\">Enhanced weathering is a threat to tropical peatlands<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Enhanced weathering is a threat to tropical peatlands&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/enhanced-weathering-tropical-peatlands\/embed\/#?secret=F4TOhocTWg#?secret=8EchSOhU6B\" data-secret=\"8EchSOhU6B\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Degradation of peatlands is responsible for 5% of anthropogenic emissions<\/h5>\n<p>The study, published in the journal <em>Nature Geoscience<\/em>, recalls how peatlands, despite covering just<strong> 3 percent of the Earth&#8217;s surface<\/strong>, store <strong>twice as much carbon as all the<\/strong> world&#8217;s <strong>forests<\/strong>. Decisive in these ecosystems is stagnant water that prevents dead plants from fully decomposing by limiting their exposure to oxygen. Provided, of course, that there is no outside intervention.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In Southeast Asia, people have drained and deforested around <strong>60 million acres<\/strong> of peatlands over the past three decades, largely for <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indonesia-paper-palm-oil-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">palm oil<\/a> and timber harvest,&#8221; explains a <a href=\"https:\/\/scripps.ucsd.edu\/news\/canals-used-drain-peatlands-are-underappreciated-hotspots-carbon-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the California university, &#8220;leaving <strong>only 6%<\/strong> untouched.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peatlands, in other words, are damaged and dead plant material is exposed to oxygen. What is unique about this study, the authors recall, is its focus on what happens to carbon that flows through <strong>drainage channels<\/strong> before reaching rivers or the ocean. To better understand the phenomenon, the scientists collected <strong>water samples<\/strong> from peatland channels in West <strong>Kalimantan<\/strong> province, Indonesia subsequently performing some experiments in the laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>In detail, the authors measured how quickly the <strong>microbes<\/strong> were able to break down organic matter and the amount of CO2 produced in the process. In addition, &#8220;breakdown by sunlight and microbes may send <strong>around 35% of the peat carbon<\/strong> that dissolves into the drainage canals into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the authors, in short, we would be facing a significant source of emissions, the impact of which would still be overlooked. Release from the canals, in fact, reduces the amount of the element capable of reaching the <strong>oceans<\/strong>. And, with it, the overall ability of marine environments to offset the impact of peatland degradation by collecting and storing carbon and thus limiting its atmospheric
