This is suggested by <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2023GL107094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Based on partial correlation analysis of data products,&#8221; the study explains, &#8220;we find positive correlations between spring and summer <strong>soil moisture<\/strong>, suggesting that spring <strong>irrigation<\/strong>-induced water surplus persists into the following summer and affects regional climate by impacting surface energy partitioning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"1bpSyn7XtF\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-carbon-uptake\/\">Drought limits carbon uptake more than expected<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Drought limits carbon uptake more than expected&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-carbon-uptake\/embed\/#?secret=GawDuSn5kj#?secret=1bpSyn7XtF\" data-secret=\"1bpSyn7XtF\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>The survey, conducted by researchers at <strong>Hohai University <\/strong>in China, focused on irrigation practices conducted between March and May and those carried out between June and August in the North China Plain, one of the most intensively irrigated areas in the country, notes a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-03-irrigation-summer-events.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> released by the authors.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is a critically important agricultural area that covers <strong>400,000 km2<\/strong> and in which wheat crops in winter and corn crops in summer alternate between seasons. The area alone contributes <strong>more than a third of the country&#8217;s production<\/strong> (37 percent).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Researchers analyzed soil moisture patterns at plant root level since <strong>1980<\/strong>. They also combined the data with a forecast model to simulate the effect of water usage on the impact of extreme summer heat waves from 2004 to 2018. Three scenarios were studied: without irrigation, both spring and summer irrigation, and spring intervention only.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"J9KBvusIcU\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/algorithms-irrigation-agriculture\/\">Algorithms drive irrigation in smart agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Algorithms drive irrigation in smart agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/algorithms-irrigation-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=KVbQTY5DHy#?secret=J9KBvusIcU\" data-secret=\"J9KBvusIcU\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Irrigation in spring reduces the impact of summer heat.<\/h5>\n<p>Simulated regional averages of extreme heat waves show a temperature of 35.8\u00b0C and a duration of 21.7 days. The positive impact of spring irrigation, the authors observe, reduced the intensity of summer heat waves by <strong>lowering temperature by 0.29\u00b0C<\/strong> and duration by <strong>2.5 days<\/strong>. Even more significant are the results of combining spring and summer irrigation practices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Indeed, the latter combination, the study reports, &#8220;<strong>significantly reduces the frequency and intensity<\/strong> of summer extreme heat events by approximately <strong>\u22126.5 days and \u22121.0\u00b0C<\/strong>, of which spring irrigation contributes about 38% and 30%, respectively.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The effect of <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-moisture-droughts-floods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so-called soil moisture memory<\/a>, which is shown in the ability to maintain higher moisture levels between seasons, is crucial. The intensification of heat waves, the authors note, is facilitated by climate change and poses a threat to agricultural yields.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this context, in addition to alleviating water stress in the subsequent summer months, the authors point out, applying <strong>more water in the spring<\/strong> can reduce the wastage of the resource favored by evaporation in the summer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings underline the importance of irrigation-induced climate impacts in mitigating extreme heat events and emphasize that climate change adaptation planning in terms of irrigation must account for<strong> cross-seasonal climatic effects<\/strong>,&#8221; the research concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Combination of
