Their goal is to increase productivity and improve soil health<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Creating of a research platform that allows farmers to more accurately monitor and evaluate the <strong>interactions between soil and plant roots<\/strong> in addition to their effects on the microbiome and soil structure itself. That is one of the goals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/2MsJCY4ShFUNpOkZMlzD1x\">TRUTH<\/a> (Thriving Roots Underpinning Total soil Health) project funded by the U.K. Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).<\/p>\n<p>Data collection is behind the development of a new system to detect the biological &#8220;signature&#8221; of soil, explains a statement released by researchers at the <strong>John Innes Centre<\/strong> who will work alongside farmers during the initiative. The program, worth \u00a31 million, will run for three years.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"qrA3vhcKZe\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/tropical-soil-roots\/\">Plant roots are crucial for soil animals<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Plant roots are crucial for soil animals&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/tropical-soil-roots\/embed\/#?secret=wYGoXP1f0E#?secret=qrA3vhcKZe\" data-secret=\"qrA3vhcKZe\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Soil degradation costs \u00a31.2 billion a year<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Soil degradation currently costs England and Wales <strong>\u00a31.2bn every year<\/strong>, but few tools have been developed to measure soil and root health and how they interact,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishfarmer.co.uk\/news\/24171470.soil-degradation-currently-costs-england-wales-1-2-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a> The Scottish Farmer newspaper, quoting an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0921800915003171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimate<\/a> from a study published in late 2015 by a group of scientists at Cranfield University in Bedford, U.K.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The research at the time attributed nearly half of the total costs to <strong>loss of soil organic content<\/strong> (47 percent of the total figure), and the remainder to compaction (39 percent) and erosion (12 percent).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some more recent data are no less worrisome. Last year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cawood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Soil-Summary-2022-digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by NRM Laboratory, the UK&#8217;s largest independent provider of agronomic and environmental analysis serving industry, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/uk-soil-nutrient-degradation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> a problematic picture. Indeed, according to the experts, who had conducted thousands of cores across the country, two-thirds of the UK&#8217;s agricultural soils showed signs of degradation. First, it will be based on the use of an innovative sensor capable of measuring microbial diversity and the<strong> ratio of fungi to bacteria<\/strong>. Second, it will lead to the creation of a &#8220;Root Rangers Platform,&#8221; an online space for sharing soil and root health analysis tools validated during the project by participating farmers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Researchers stated two goals: they want to increase productivity and <strong>improve soil health<\/strong> thus educing, in thos way, the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-dependence-phosphorus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reliance on synthetic inputs<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to the John Innes Centre, the program involves several players. BOFIN (British On-Farm Innovation Network), for example, is leading on farmer engagement for the project.\u00a0<strong>PES Technologies<\/strong> developed the sensor. <strong>CHAP<\/strong>, a government-funded organization, brings together scientists, farmers, businesses and other stakeholders and manages the project. Finally, the <strong>University of Nottingham<\/strong>\u00a0will be in charge of assessing soil and root health.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"QC8oZhZZfc\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/research-sip-soil-microbes\/\">A new research technique may unlock the secrets of soil microbes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;A new research technique may unlock the secrets of soil microbes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/research-sip-soil-microbes\/embed\/#?secret=kmJkY0dAeG#?secret=QC8oZhZZfc\" data-secret=\"QC8oZhZZfc\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Scientists and farmers working together<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;The farmer-led collaboration hopes to test and confirm desirable traits that rely on the interactions between crops and soil, and lead to a better understanding of these interactions,&#8221; the John Innes Centre statement explains. &#8220;The datasets resulting from the soil <strong>microbiome<\/strong> and root and soil structure analysis will enable the further development of the soil sensor as a tool for farmers to monitor key soil health parameters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In addition, the John Innes Centre &#8220;will provide heritage <strong>wheat varieties<\/strong> from the Watkins landrace collection held by the Germplasm Resources Unit, selected for their capacity to control microbial transformation of <strong>nitrogen in soil<\/strong> and enhance the plant uptake and use efficiency.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Experts will work alongside farmers conducting experimental trials on their farms with the goal of identifying the tools needed to analyze crop roots and quantify the<strong> impact of their farming method<\/strong>.
