That&#8217;s why deforestation poses a threat in terms of pollution, a MIT study finds<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>About 10 percent of human-caused <strong>mercury<\/strong> emissions into the atmosphere are the result of global deforestation, a <strong>Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/strong> (MIT) <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.3c07851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> says. The element, the researchers explain, is absorbed by global vegetation. But current rates of deforestation, they add, could lead to an increase in net emissions, that is, the balance between the amount absorbed of the element and the amount released.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"cfUfJc4VQl\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/riparian-buffer-strips-water\/\">Riparian buffer strips reduce water pollution while protecting soil health, study says<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Riparian buffer strips reduce water pollution while protecting soil health, study says&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/riparian-buffer-strips-water\/embed\/#?secret=JJoYR436vI#?secret=cfUfJc4VQl\" data-secret=\"cfUfJc4VQl\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The mercury cycle<\/h5>\n<p>Vegetation, the researchers explain, absorbs the element <strong>from the atmosphere<\/strong> no differently from what they do with CO2. Anyway, mercury does not perform an essential biological function for plants. The element sits largely within the leaves until it falls out and is absorbed into the soil.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When it ends up in watersheds or streams instead, however, mercury becomes a problem for <strong>human health<\/strong> as well. Especially when, after being absorbed by fish, it enters the <strong>food chain<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In soils, notes Ari Feinberg, researcher and co-author of the study, in a memo released by MIT, &#8220;mercury is much more tightly bound than it would be if it were deposited in the ocean.&#8221; Forests, in short, &#8220;are doing a sort of <strong>ecosystem service<\/strong>, in that they are sequestering mercury for longer timescales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5nffCf7VTK\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-agriculture-global-biodiversity\/\">Deforestazione agricola, il suo impatto sulla biodiversit\u00e0 non \u00e8 lo stesso ovunque<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deforestazione agricola, il suo impatto sulla biodiversit\u00e0 non \u00e8 lo stesso ovunque&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-agriculture-global-biodiversity\/embed\/#?secret=ru9ZNTOc1D#?secret=5nffCf7VTK\" data-secret=\"5nffCf7VTK\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The investigation<\/h5>\n<p>MIT scientists divided areas of the Planet into eight regions and ran several simulations for each of them to calculate emission factors. &#8220;Deforestation reduces the capacity of the terrestrial biosphere to take up toxic pollutant mercury (Hg) and enhances <strong>the release of secondary Hg from soils<\/strong>,&#8221; the study states.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Further, &#8220;Using global Hg modeling constrained by field observations, we estimate that net Hg fluxes to the atmosphere due to deforestation are <strong>217 Mg year\u20131<\/strong> for 2015, <strong>approximately 10% of global primary anthropogenic emissions<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If deforestation were a nation, &#8220;it would be the<strong> second highest emitting country<\/strong>, after China, which emits around 500 tons of mercury a year.&#8221;, says Feinberg. Curbing <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/lula-effect-amazon-deforestation-falls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deforestation in the region<\/a> would significantly reduce pollution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In contrast, &#8220;IIf deforestation of the Amazon rainforest continues at business-as-usual rates, net Hg emissions from the region <strong>will increase by 153 Mg year\u20131<\/strong> by 2050, enhancing the transport and subsequent deposition of Hg to aquatic ecosystems.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, the researchers estimate that global reforestation efforts could increase <strong>annual mercury uptake by about 5 percent<\/strong>.
