This is the hypothesis put forward by four scientists from <strong>Leiden University<\/strong> in the Netherlands in the journal <em>Environmental Science &amp; Technology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we recognize that some of the reported functionalities of nanoenabled pesticides may indeed hold potential for more efficient means of crop protection,&#8221; they <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.3c10207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say<\/a>, &#8220;we argue that claims regarding <strong>reduced environmental risks<\/strong> are often based on premises that insufficiently address their specific exposure and hazard profiles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"L25ThOsIS3\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nanomaterials-nanotechnology-soil\/\">Nanotechnology and nanomaterials are useful allies in soil protection<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Nanotechnology and nanomaterials are useful allies in soil protection&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nanomaterials-nanotechnology-soil\/embed\/#?secret=P1d3ZD2OpC#?secret=L25ThOsIS3\" data-secret=\"L25ThOsIS3\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Nanopesticides<\/h5>\n<p>Nanopesticides are phytopharmaceuticals characterized by a special structure composed of <strong>nanoparticles containing the substance <\/strong>used to tackle harmful microorganisms. These tools are developed to provide efficient distribution of the substance while limiting waste and <strong>environmental impact<\/strong>. Traditional pesticides tend to adhere to the upper layers of the soil. In this way, the risk is that only a small part of the substance is able to reach the roots of the plant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To overcome this problem, <strong>large amounts of product<\/strong> can be used deliberately, but this strategy increases the likelihood of <strong>soil and water contamination<\/strong>. With obvious health consequences.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Created through <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nanoparticles-soil-pests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nanoengineering<\/a>, the microparticles used in the newly developed products &#8211; made of metal or organic material &#8211; &#8220;may be released slowly or only under optimal (weather) conditions,&#8221; a statement from Leiden University says. &#8220;This allows them to work for <strong>a longer period<\/strong> in the field and reduce leaching and runoff into surface water.&#8221; But this does not mean an absence of risk.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6dhfTnA6Uu\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pesticides-sweden-nanosensors\/\">Pesticides do not escape nanosensors. From Sweden a low-cost solution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pesticides-sweden-nanosensors\/embed\/#?secret=TC7zcZMEFM#?secret=6dhfTnA6Uu\" data-secret=\"6dhfTnA6Uu\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Less use but more downside?<\/h5>\n<p>According to ecotoxicologist <strong>Tom Nederstigt<\/strong>, one of the four signatories to the article, the assessments conducted so far seem to underestimate two particular characteristics of nanopesticides: their tendency to act over a longer period of time and their greater toxicity compared to traditional products.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In practice, this could mean that use and emissions are smaller, but <strong>the downsides for nature are greater<\/strong>,&#8221; the authors explain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The risk, in short, is that other particularly valuable soil organisms such as <strong>invertebrates and microbes<\/strong> will be exposed to the substance over a longer period of time. Hence they call for evaluators to focus on the effects on non-target organisms of products while taking into account the longer duration of exposure.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We iterate the importance of considering trade-offs between <strong>usage volumes and exposure<\/strong> and hazard profiles that could concomitantly arise from their enhanced efficiency,&#8221;
