This is shown by an American research involving two institutes in Kiev<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the inestimable human costs, the conflict between <strong>Russia and Ukraine<\/strong> also produces significant environmental damage by clearly impacting forests. This is reported in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-023-01099-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> involving researchers from the <strong>University of Maryland<\/strong>, the Space Research Institute in Kiev, and the Polytechnic Institute in the Ukrainian capital.<\/p>\n<p>The study looks at <strong>territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions under partial Russian control<\/strong> that belong to the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/bern-convention\/emerald-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emerald Network<\/a>. The network brings together a number of natural areas protected under the 1979 Bern Convention.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"68nNXZJCUL\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-russia-black-soil\/\">War and climate change threaten Ukraine&#8217;s &#8216;magic&#8217; soil<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;War and climate change threaten Ukraine&#8217;s &#8216;magic&#8217; soil&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-russia-black-soil\/embed\/#?secret=zJj7ipGOdk#?secret=68nNXZJCUL\" data-secret=\"68nNXZJCUL\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>This research, published in the journal Communications Earth &amp; Environment, covers a 25-year period between 1996, when Kiev adopted the Bern Convention, and 2020. The period under observation, therefore, does not include the latest conflict triggered by the <strong>Russian invasion<\/strong> in 2022. But it does include Moscow&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/documents-dds-ny.un.org\/doc\/UNDOC\/GEN\/N13\/455\/17\/PDF\/N1345517.pdf?OpenElement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disputed<\/a> annexation of Crimea in early 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used Landsat and Copernicus Sentinel 1 and 2 <strong>satellite images<\/strong> to analyze changes in forest cover in Emerald Network protected areas located in the Luhansk region. Which has been under partial Russian control for the past decade.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LVhXxgZ1Bw\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-war-pollution-soil\/\">Ukraine will have to deal with war damages to agriculture for a century (at least)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Ukraine will have to deal with war damages to agriculture for a century (at least)&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-war-pollution-soil\/embed\/#?secret=zZ1dT9Ov3J#?secret=LVhXxgZ1Bw\" data-secret=\"LVhXxgZ1Bw\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>In the invaded territories, 25 percent of the forests were lost<\/h5>\n<p>The results, the study says, &#8220;reveal that the implementation of Bern Convention conservation policies led to a shift from deforestation (\u22124% each) to reforestation (+8% and +10%) <strong>on both sides of the Emerald Network<\/strong> divided by the demarcation line in 2014.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The survey, moreover, &#8220;shows that despite the war, territories<strong> under Ukraine control<\/strong> after 2014 continued reforestation (<strong>+9%<\/strong>), while sites under Russian control experienced dramatic forest loss (<strong>\u221225%<\/strong>).&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_22761\" style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22761\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22761\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ucraina.jpg\" alt=\"Danni e perdite del settore agricolo e del comparto allevamento in Ucraina. Source: FAO, 2022 file:\/\/\/D:\/cc3311en.pdf Creative Commons AttributionNonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO licence (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Billions of dollars worth of environmental damage in Ukraine<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Our results indicate that the separation of ecosystems from environmental-protection institutions and policies through the occupation of Ukrainian territory led to dramatic degradation of the environment and loss of ecosystem sustainability,&#8221; said <strong>Nataliia Kussul<\/strong>, director of the Department of Mathematics at Kiev Polytechnic Institute in a statement released by the researchers. The Russian military offensive in early 2022, the authors also point out, has since taken even more territories out of legal protection.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This study, therefore, adds a new chapter to the issue of <strong>collateral environmental damage<\/strong> from the conflict, which has long been the focus of attention of various observers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just over a year ago, an FAO <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/attachments\/e9214092-2382-46fc-a8d5-2528da4414ca\/cc3311en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> had revealed how in the first six months of the war alone the total damage and losses to Ukrainian farmers and ranchers already amounted to<strong> nearly $2.25 billion<\/strong>. Meanwhile, experts from the <strong>Sokolovsky Institute<\/strong> for Soil Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/ukraine-how-the-war-is-making-soil-and-water-toxic\/a-64907471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> by German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, have focused on the problem of soil contamination. Which, as a result of the war, would show increasing concentrations of cadmium and lead. According to their estimates, the total damage to Ukrainian soil <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-war-soil-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would amount<\/a> to <strong>$15 billion<\/strong>.
