A phenomenon that dampens the enthusiasm that has partly surrounded the controversial herbicide since its launch<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In cropfields of North America planted with corn and soybeans and treated with <strong>glyphosate<\/strong>, one of the most notorious and <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/le-monde-glyphosate-eu-alarming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial<\/a> herbicides, weeds that were supposed to be eradicated are reportedly gaining ground again after developing some adaptability. This is supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/pnasnexus\/article\/2\/12\/pgad338\/7457920?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (<strong>USDA-ARS<\/strong>) and the <strong>University of Illinois<\/strong> Urbana-Champaign.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"SHl7PSQOoO\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/germany-pesticides-reduction\/\">Germany, the reduction in the use of pesticides is still too slow<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Germany, the reduction in the use of pesticides is still too slow&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/germany-pesticides-reduction\/embed\/#?secret=WLsoP7U8ax#?secret=SHl7PSQOoO\" data-secret=\"SHl7PSQOoO\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>The survey was based on the collection of annual data from <strong>herbicide<\/strong> evaluation trials conducted at a number of universities in the United States and Canada. &#8220;Trials from 24 institutions <strong>from 1996 to 2021<\/strong> were compiled into a single database,&#8221; the study states. The researchers tested the performance of glyphosate for each year, either alone or in combination with another herbicide. The investigation covered seven weeds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Control ability <strong>in areas treated with glyphosate alone declined over time<\/strong> while that measured in areas subject to prior use of another herbicide remained relatively unchanged.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;These results,&#8221; the study points out, &#8220;illustrate <strong>the rapid adaptation of agronomically important weed species<\/strong> to the paradigm-shifting product glyphosate. Including more diversity in weed management systems is essential to slowing weed adaptation and prolonging the usefulness of existing and future technologies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"JaTMQ3tgEb\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pesticides-sweden-nanosensors\/\">Pesticides do not escape nanosensors. From Sweden a low-cost solution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/pesticides-sweden-nanosensors\/embed\/#?secret=eOzwHupn8C#?secret=JaTMQ3tgEb\" data-secret=\"JaTMQ3tgEb\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Grasses adapted to glyphosate<\/h5>\n<p>According to <strong>Chris Landau<\/strong>, USDA-ARS researcher and lead author of the study, quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/aces.illinois.edu\/news\/silver-bullet-wasnt-glyphosates-declining-weed-control-over-25-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> released by the University of Illinois, the analysis &#8220;represents one of the largest cumulative measures of how weed communities have adapted to the simplified weed management tactics adopted at an unprecedented scale throughout North America.&#8221; Although glyphosate proved particularly effective initially, most noxious weeds showed <strong>signs of adapting<\/strong> to the chemical in only two to three years.<\/p>\n<p>Over a decade, the statement continues, the glyphosate reactivity of grasses <strong>declined by 31.6 percent<\/strong> in the worst cases. Evidencing further declines as time passed. The mechanism is not entirely understood. The World Health Organization, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/who-rebuts-house-committee-criticisms-about-glyphosate-cancer-warning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has defined<\/a>\u00a0the substance as \u201cprobably\u00a0<strong>carcinogenic<\/strong>\u00a0to humans.\u201d <strong>A recent survey conducted in Mexico by researchers at the Dutch University of<\/strong> <strong>Wageningen<\/strong>, moreover,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/glyphosate-soil-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0a negative correlation between the presence of glyphosate and the density of several categories of macroinvertebrates.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the <strong>EU Commission<\/strong> granted a five-year approval for glyphosate. The approval expired on December 15, 2022, and was subsequently renewed for one year. On November 16, the European Commission committed to renew the <strong>authorization for 10 more years<\/strong>. The EU action is based on the favorable opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) and came in response to the failure of representatives of the 27 EU countries to reach a qualified majority in a vote on the issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s the hypothesis of an American study: in soils treated with glyphosate, plants targeted for eradication are spreading again.
