The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-023-01338-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, thus highlights the existence of a possible natural solution<strong> to mitigate the effects of climate change<\/strong>, such as extreme weather events.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"i17eO5Rjh4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/urban-biodiversity-health\/\">Loss of urban biodiversity is a threat to human health<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Loss of urban biodiversity is a threat to human health&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/urban-biodiversity-health\/embed\/#?secret=gctlPipLFp#?secret=i17eO5Rjh4\" data-secret=\"i17eO5Rjh4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The soil study<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Soil temperature plays a central role in controlling important ecosystem processes related to water, carbon and nutrient dynamics, microbial activity and agricultural productivity,,&#8221; <strong>Yuanyuan Huang<\/strong>, a researcher at the Leipzig iDiv and lead author of the study, explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/idw-online.de\/de\/news825518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. To test the impact of biodiversity on soil temperature itself, the scholars analyzed data collected <strong>from 2004 to 2021<\/strong> at an experimental site consisting of 80 plots with a variety of plants ranging from one to 60 species.<\/p>\n<p>Temperature values were automatically recorded at a depth of five and fifteen centimeters at one-minute intervals over an 18-year period, during which time there was <strong>considerable climatic variability<\/strong>. For the entire period under study, the statement says, &#8220;plant diversity showed a remarkable ability to protect the soil from overheating in scorching heat and to help retain heat in colder periods.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"UkCOxrDjTK\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/data-emissions-forest-diverging-there-is-a-solution\/\">Data on forest emissions are still diverging. In summer, for example, the temperature recorded in the areas with the greatest plant diversity <strong>was about 5\u00b0C lower<\/strong> when compared with plots without vegetation. At the same time, &#8220;on days with particularly low air temperatures, the soil temperature in the 60-species plant community <strong>was 1.48 degrees Celsius warmer<\/strong> than in the plots with no plants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The stabilizing effect of plant diversity resulted in <strong>reduced heat conduction<\/strong> in the last 60 centimeters of soil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings reveal that plant diversity acts as a natural buffer, <strong>preventing soil heating in hot weather and cooling in cold weather<\/strong>&#8221; the study states. \u201cThis diversity effect persists year-round, intensifying with the aging of experimental communities and being even stronger under extreme climate conditions, such as hot days or dry years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"u97aeM98ql\"><p><a results of the study have far-reaching implications. &#8220;Using structural equation modelling, we found that plant diversity stabilizes soil temperature by increasing soil <strong>organic carbon concentrations<\/strong> and, to a lesser extent, plant leaf area index,&#8221; the study states.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also claim that in some key ecosystems such as the great <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/grasslands-canada-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grasslands<\/a>, for example, the <strong>stabilization of soil temperature<\/strong> provided by plant diversity could be critical &#8220;to mitigate the negative effects of extreme climatic events such as soil carbon decomposition thus slowing global
