A Canadian study provides new insights for maintaining and improving soil quality while mitigating climate change<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adding calcium to soil contributes to increased organic matter and <strong>carbon sequestration<\/strong>. This is claimed by scientists from Cornell and Purdue University in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-42291-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted at the Canadian Light Source, a research laboratory at the <strong>University of Saskatchewan<\/strong>, Canada. Researchers, in particular, have discovered a previously unknown mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We showed that by adding calcium to soil, we changed the community of microbes in the soil and the way they process organic matter,&#8221; explained <strong>Itamar Shabtai<\/strong>, assistant professor of science at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and lead author of the investigation in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsource.ca\/public\/news\/2023-24-q2-oct-dec\/adding-calcium-to-soils-can-help-increase-organic-matter-retain-more-carbon.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> released by the laboratory. Microorganisms, in particular, reportedly acted more efficiently: &#8220;they processed it in a more efficient manner \u2013 more carbon was retained in the soil and less was lost to the atmosphere as CO2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vzDjRgi0b0o?si=EliAnZ62kaV2zzru\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>The experiment<\/h5>\n<p>Researchers used laboratory equipment to measure <strong>the amount of decomposed plant matter<\/strong> following the addition of calcium by examining samples of topsoil collected from an experimental field in Ithaca, New York State. The collected soil, the study says, &#8220;was air-dried, sieved to 2\u2009mm, and visible plant detritus removed.&#8221; The samples were treated with a <strong>calcium chloride<\/strong> <strong>solution<\/strong> and examined after about four months.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The authors, in particular, observed how calcium <strong>affects the microbial transformation<\/strong> of the litter and the formation of mineral-associated organic matter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Calcium additions,&#8221; they explain, &#8220;promote hyphae-forming bacteria, which often specialize in colonizing surfaces, and increase incorporation of litter into microbial biomass and carbon use efficiency by approximately 45% each.&#8221; They also &#8220;<strong>reduce cumulative CO2 production by 4%<\/strong>, while promoting associations between minerals and microbial byproducts of plant litter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Ly3L2vKeLU\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crushed-rock-soil-carbon\/\">Crushed volcanic rock helps soil capture carbon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Crushed volcanic rock helps soil capture carbon&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crushed-rock-soil-carbon\/embed\/#?secret=U2b4azhav6#?secret=Ly3L2vKeLU\" data-secret=\"Ly3L2vKeLU\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A support for farmers<\/h5>\n<p>Adding calcium to soil is certainly not a new practice in agriculture. Farmers have always used this element for many reasons related to <strong>increasing crop yields<\/strong>, including pH regulation and improving soil structure. The findings that emerged in the study &#8220;expand the role of Ca in soil organic carbon persistence from solely a driver of physico-chemical reactions to a mediator of coupled abiotic-biotic cycling of soil organic carbon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The results of the investigation, in other words, provide additional knowledge for maintaining and improving organic matter in soils. &#8220;Now that we have a better understanding of how calcium can impact how <strong>microbes<\/strong> improve soil carbon,&#8221; Shabtai explains. &#8220;We can perhaps use soil amendments that contain calcium and are already being used by farmers \u2013 such as <strong>lime<\/strong> and <strong>gypsum<\/strong> \u2013 in a way that can benefit soil organic matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"M66bRDXiI4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fungi-carbon-forest\/\">This is how fungi regulate the carbon cycle in forests<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;This is how fungi regulate the carbon cycle in forests&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fungi-carbon-forest\/embed\/#?secret=hskGrL5eFI#?secret=M66bRDXiI4\" data-secret=\"M66bRDXiI4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>New knowledge for carbon farming<\/h5>\n<p>The study also emerges as an additional contribution to knowledge about <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/canada-carbon-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon farming<\/a>. Or the set of agricultural practices that help increase carbon sequestration in the soil. Promoting its health and mitigating the effects of <strong>climate change<\/strong>. &#8220;Soils that contain more carbon are generally healthier,&#8221; explains Shabtai. &#8220;They are better able <strong>to hold on to water<\/strong> in drought conditions. Soils with higher amounts of organic carbon are also are able to deliver nutrients more efficiently to plants and promote plant growth, and they\u2019re more resistant to erosion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Globally, the researcher explains, the amount of <strong>carbon<\/strong> stored in the soil exceeds the amount in plants and the atmosphere combined. &#8220;If we can increase carbon in soil, we can perhaps make a dent in the increase in atmospheric CO2 that we\u2019re seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Addition of calcium to soil promotes sequestration and increase in organic matter.
