This is reported in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-023-01864-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> by a group of scientists led by <strong>Zhu Jiaojun<\/strong>, a professor at the Institute of Applied Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The investigation, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, specifically highlighted the dynamics between mycorrhizal species and plant biomass in forest ecosystems under conditions of nitrogen deposition and warming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Forest ecosystems store <strong>~80% of the carbon<\/strong> in terrestrial ecosystems, but their long-term carbon sequestration depends partly on how plant biomass and soil carbon stocks will respond to global changes,&#8221; the study says. That response, anyway, &#8220;remains uncertain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"AHc3rs7FD4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-climate-fungi-soil\/\">Carbon keepers fungi are the soil secret weapon against climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Carbon keepers fungi are the soil secret weapon against climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-climate-fungi-soil\/embed\/#?secret=AUK7pKulvq#?secret=AHc3rs7FD4\" data-secret=\"AHc3rs7FD4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The importance of mycorrhizal fungi<\/h5>\n<p>This study examines the two most common species of mycorrhizal fungi that play a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-fungi-forest-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key role<\/a> in soil dynamics: <strong>arbuscules<\/strong> (AM) and <strong>ectomycorrhizal<\/strong> <strong>fungi<\/strong> (ECM). The interaction of these with plants is critical to the carbon cycle in forests. Indeed, it influences the growth of the plants themselves, the acquisition of nutrients and the storage of the element in the soil.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese researchers had already studied subsurface carbon accumulation in Qingyuan forest in the south of the country. The results, recalls a <a href=\"http:\/\/english.iae.cas.cn\/Research2017\/RP2017\/202311\/t20231116_643688.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the Beijing Academy of Sciences, showed <strong>25 percent higher<\/strong> subsurface carbon stocks in forests dominated by shrubs when compared with those where ectomycorrhizal fungi were prevalent. Specifically, the authors collected more than three thousand data sets on forest biomass, soil carbon, and other environmental factors. However, soil C stocks did not significant change under N deposition and warming as a result of soil acidification and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Priming_(psychology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">priming effect<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, &#8220;Under nitrogen deposition and warming, soil carbon stock depended on mycorrhizal associations, decreasing in <strong>forests<\/strong> dominated by arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species while increasing in forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal tree species.&#8221; These results thus highlight the presence of an interaction between fungi, plant biomass and soil carbon sequestration in forests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese research highlights how different categories of
