Precision agriculture is essential<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Investing in soil health can increase food production and reduce GHG emissions in parallel,&#8221; the <strong>World Economic Forum<\/strong> (WEF) just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2023\/11\/soil-health-may-be-our-most-overlooked-asset-in-the-fight-against-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, analyzing the impact of intervention strategies given the essential goal of food security.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Agriculture,&#8221; the WEF explained, &#8220;contributes <strong>around 25% of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong> and has historically been seen as a zero-sum game: either reduce emissions and fall short of producing the food the world needs or expand to feed a growing global population and accelerate climate change.&#8221; Today, however, we can overcome this problem.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GTGCveLErQ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mission-soil-research-projects\/\">Mission Soil, the EU Commission allocates \u20ac90 million for 17 research projects<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Mission Soil, the EU Commission allocates \u20ac90 million for 17 research projects&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mission-soil-research-projects\/embed\/#?secret=29yLSgtMk7#?secret=GTGCveLErQ\" data-secret=\"GTGCveLErQ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Betting on soil<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Soils have historically been the most overlooked asset in improving agriculture and mitigating climate change,&#8221; WEF writes. Yet <strong>FAO<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/soils-portal\/soil-management\/soil-carbon-sequestration\/ar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> suggest that soils can sequester <strong>more than 10 percent of human-caused emissions<\/strong>. Recent studies indicate an even higher potential. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.1706103114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypotheses<\/a> suggest a sequestration capacity equal to half of annual global CO2 emissions, Other <a href=\"https:\/\/rodaleinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rodale-Soil-Carbon-White-Paper_v11-compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> even suggest that our soils could potentially sequester more CO2 than we emit each year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the most important strategies for curbing greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture is <strong>reducing deforestation<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The destruction of forested areas, in fact, results in <strong>land use change<\/strong>, the basis, the Forum says, for one-third of agriculture&#8217;s greenhouse gas emissions. These strategies are key to reconciling climate mitigation efforts with increased production. Indeed, again according to the FAO, agricultural production will have to increase by 60 percent by mid-century to meet global food demand.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"6ulcy1Yogo\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/phosphorus-co2-rice-crops\/\">CO2 emissions reduce soil phosphorus and put rice crops at risk<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;CO2 emissions reduce soil phosphorus and put rice crops at risk&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/phosphorus-co2-rice-crops\/embed\/#?secret=NfpRcwvRyP#?secret=6ulcy1Yogo\" data-secret=\"6ulcy1Yogo\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Using the most suitable fertilizers<\/h5>\n<p>Another key strategy is maximizing soil potential through adequate and calibrated nutrient inputs. Soils around the world, WEF notes, are deficient in key substances that limit their potential to increase yields and maximize carbon sequestration. In particular, <strong>46 percent of soils<\/strong> do not contain enough <strong>phosphorus<\/strong>, an<a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/cassava-brazil-soil-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> essential element<\/a> for agriculture. So what to do?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Rebalancing soil nutrients requires <strong>ongoing investment<\/strong>, but not the kind of investment farmers might expect,&#8221; the Forum writes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This investment does not require that they spend significant capital on new infrastructure and technologies. Instead, soil health is improved simply by providing the soil with the nutrients it needs.&#8221; One viable system is <strong>the replacement of conventional fertilizers<\/strong> with customized blends that can act on soil nutrient imbalances.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ydgqBkyzXI\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fertilizers-fao-soil-africa\/\">Soil mapping means more information and less fertilizers<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil mapping means more information and less fertilizers&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fertilizers-fao-soil-africa\/embed\/#?secret=PECEWGRgQC#?secret=ydgqBkyzXI\" data-secret=\"ydgqBkyzXI\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The role of precision agriculture<\/h5>\n<p>The calibrated application of fertilizers is often associated with what is known as <strong>precision agriculture<\/strong>. That is, that set of techniques that enable farmers to optimize resource efficiency while minimizing waste. &#8220;Importantly, precision agriculture does not translate into higher costs for farmers,&#8221; WEF says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Instead, it provides farmers with an <strong>economic incentive<\/strong> to manage the nutrition of their soils more efficiently while maximizing the potential for soil-based carbon sequestration.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Agriculture, the Forum writes, highlights a special feature when compared with other sectors: it can experience both<strong> increased production and reduced impact<\/strong>.
