The initiative involves NASA and the Indian space agency ISRO<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the dynamics of ecosystems, including forests, analyzing the carbon cycle and the effects of human activity. This is the goal of <strong>NISAR<\/strong> mission, a joint operation involving <strong>NASA<\/strong> and <strong>ISRO<\/strong>, the Indian Space Agency. The initiative will be launched in early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>This operation will result in the launch of a satellite that will collect important data through the use of a radar system that &#8220;<strong>will scan nearly all of Earth\u2019s land<\/strong> and ice surfaces twice every 12 days,&#8221; a NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-isro-radar-mission-to-provide-dynamic-view-of-forests-wetlands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> explains. &#8220;The data it collects will help researchers understand two key functions of both ecosystem types: the capture and the release of carbon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"PbUEVoJdQ9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sensors-ai-amazon-deforestation\/\">Sensors and AI fight deforestation in the Amazon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Sensors and AI fight deforestation in the Amazon&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/sensors-ai-amazon-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=Fhmr6CKuzb#?secret=PbUEVoJdQ9\" data-secret=\"PbUEVoJdQ9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Exploitation of forests generates 11 percent of anthropogenic emissions<\/h5>\n<p>Researchers thus hope to track land cover changes on a global scale and their consequences. &#8220;The radar technology on NISAR will allow us to get a sweeping perspective of the planet in space and time,&#8221; said <strong>Paul Rosen, a scientist at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/strong> in Pasadena, California. &#8220;It can give us a really reliable view of exactly how Earth\u2019s land and ice are changing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Forestry and other land-use changes, the researchers recall, account for <strong>about 11 percent of net human-related greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new data will provide a better understanding of how deforestation affects the carbon cycle and contributes to global warming. &#8220;Globally, we do not understand well the <strong>carbon<\/strong> sources and sinks from terrestrial ecosystems, particularly from forests,&#8221; explained <strong>Anup Das<\/strong>, co-director of the group of ISRO scientists involved in the project. &#8220;So we expect that NISAR will greatly help address that, especially in less dense forests, which are more vulnerable to deforestation and degradation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mWuxfecV3l8?si=Wx_t5YHryvob0Uh6\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>A weather-proof system<\/h5>\n<p>The system is based on the use of a radar capable of penetrating leaves and branches by bouncing off tree trunks and the ground below. Subsequent analysis of the reflected signal will make it possible <strong>to estimate the density of forest cover<\/strong>, its variation over time, and some clues as to its possible causes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Radar technology thus makes it possible to overcome the obstacles that forest conformation or <strong>weather conditions<\/strong> can sometimes set before researchers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By studying the signal, in fact, scientists will be able to better understand the dynamics affecting &#8220;vast, often cloud-covered rainforests such as those in the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-congo-basin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congo<\/a> and Amazon basins, which lose <strong>millions of wooded acres<\/strong> every year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Wk5eDftlIT\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/artificial-intelligence-deforestation\/\">Artificial intelligence challenges deforestation in Brazil<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Artificial intelligence challenges deforestation in Brazil&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/artificial-intelligence-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=50TlSaG683#?secret=Wk5eDftlIT\" data-secret=\"Wk5eDftlIT\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>NASA and FAO against deforestation<\/h5>\n<p>This is not the first time geospatial data have been used to monitor and curb <strong>deforestation<\/strong>. In 2021, for example, <strong>FAO<\/strong> and the World Resources Institute (WRI) launched a <strong>$13.7 million<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/newsroom\/detail\/enhancing-sustainable-forest-landscapes-deforestation-FAO-USAID-WRI-09112021\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initiative<\/a> with the support of several partners including <strong>Google<\/strong> and <strong>NASA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The project, known as the <strong>Forest Data Partnership<\/strong>, also involves Unilever and is based on the use of the NASA-USAID SEVIR program. Its goal, the FAO <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-nasa-google-deforestation-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>, is to work &#8220;towards a consistent geospatial data ecosystem so that all actors \u2013 local, government, producers, traders, and financiers \u2013 are able to access consistent, <strong>open-source<\/strong>, publicly available, and validated geospatial data related to forest-risk commodities and restoration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"afPk5De0NW\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-remote-sensing-deforestation\/\">New developments in deforestation remote sensing in the U.S.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;New developments in deforestation remote sensing in the U.S.&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-remote-sensing-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=75rCEnLEjc#?secret=afPk5De0NW\" data-secret=\"afPk5De0NW\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Earthquakes, landslides and floods under the lens<\/h5>\n<p>In addition to tracking changes in forest ecosystems, the NISAR satellite will also collect information on ground motion. This will help researchers understand the dynamics of various phenomena such as <strong>earthquakes<\/strong>, volcanic eruptions and landslides. As well as melting glaciers and sea ice.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Also under the satellite&#8217;s lens are the dynamics at work in <strong>wetlands<\/strong>. When wetlands dry out, scientists remind us, the carbon they store is exposed to oxygen, generating <strong>the release of CO2<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers also aim to better understand how <strong>climate change<\/strong>, the rainfall patterns it affects and human activities together are affecting the extent, frequency and duration of flooding in the wetlands themselves.
