This is reported in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06562-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and Conservation International.<\/p>\n<p>The research, published in the journal Nature, recalls how human activity has accelerated the <strong>natural extinction rate<\/strong> of vertebrates by 22 times. A phenomenon capable of destabilizing food webs by jeopardizing fundamental services such as pollination, availability of a healthy diet and disease control.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"nnRRyxFMQx\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/clima-a-rischio-biodiversita-brasile-orientale\/\">Climate change puts 40 percent of biodiversity in eastern Brazil at risk<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Climate change puts 40 percent of biodiversity in eastern Brazil at risk&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/clima-a-rischio-biodiversita-brasile-orientale\/embed\/#?secret=7mXRdPl53Y#?secret=nnRRyxFMQx\" data-secret=\"nnRRyxFMQx\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>In unprotected areas, vertebrate populations halve in 40 years<\/h5>\n<p>The researchers, led by <strong>Justin Nowakowski<\/strong>, SERC biologist and lead author of the study, examined trends over time in 2,239 populations both inside and outside protected areas on every continent on the Planet with the exception of Antarctica.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On average, vertebrates <strong>declined by 0.4 percent<\/strong> per year inside protected areas, almost five times slower than specimens living outside them (<strong>1.8 percent<\/strong> per year).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At these rates, the researchers note, populations outside protected areas could see their numbers <strong>halved in just 40 years<\/strong>. Not least because of its <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-biodiversity-economy-in-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economic fallout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some observers, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/jul\/04\/biodiversity-loss-could-wreck-the-global-financial-system-and-its-only-a-matter-of-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have begun to refer<\/a> to climate change and <strong>biodiversity loss<\/strong> as &#8220;twin crises facing the global financial system.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/957292\/Dasgupta_Review_-_Abridged_Version.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> commissioned by the British government and known as &#8220;The Dasgupta review,&#8221; in particular, pointed out that &#8220;our <strong>economic system<\/strong> is dependent on biodiversity.&#8221; For some time, the survey further notes, governments have recognized how the dual emergencies related to climate and species diversity pose &#8220;an <strong>existential threat<\/strong> to nature, people, prosperity and security.&#8221; Protection policies and investment choices in line with them, consequently, become crucial to averting environmental damage and financial losses.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"AKCqUExAgE\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/tea-agroecology-biodiversity\/\">How agroecology supports biodiversity conservation in tea plantations<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;How agroecology supports biodiversity conservation in tea plantations&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/tea-agroecology-biodiversity\/embed\/#?secret=FqfVBVpoq2#?secret=AKCqUExAgE\" data-secret=\"AKCqUExAgE\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Climate change is exacerbating the problem<\/h5>\n<p>According to the authors, some classes of vertebrates<strong>\u00a0have benefited most<\/strong> from the effects of protection.
