It recognizes noises such as chainsaws and tractors: so it can warn of dangers in real time<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fight against deforestation in the <strong>Amazon<\/strong> is also being conducted with a small and unsuspected tool: curupiras, boxes designed to &#8220;hug&#8221; trees and remotely send out any danger signals. This story, that <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/tree-hugging-ai-rescue-brazilian-014828174.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was reported<\/a> in recent weeks by Agence France Presse, once again expands the growing literature on the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/artificial-intelligence-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use of artificial intelligence in the fight against deforestation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named after a creature from Brazilian folklore, the &#8220;curupiras&#8221; &#8211; which are attached to plants with a belt &#8211; are equipped with <strong>sensors and software<\/strong> programmed to recognize the sounds of all those tools, from chainsaws to tractors, whose use is associated with deforestation. The system identifies the threat and sends a <strong>remote communication<\/strong> to authorities called to intervene.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"F9MF6hdvAe\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/lula-effect-amazon-deforestation-falls\/\">It&#8217;s the Lula effect? That way, when a threat occurs, anyone who becomes aware of it does so in real time, rather than after the damage has been done,&#8221; Professor <strong>Raimundo Cl\u00e1udio Souza Gomes<\/strong>, coordinator of the Laborat\u00f3rio de Sistemas Embarcados at the <strong>Universidade do Estado do Amazonas<\/strong>, the academic institution responsible for the project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acritica.com\/amazonia\/uea-desenvolve-sistema-que-monitora-o-desmatamento-a-partir-dos-sons-1.315136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> to the A Cr\u00edtica website.<\/p>\n<p>The new system, in short, has important advantages. Other high-tech solutions, such as <strong>satellite analysis<\/strong> for example, can provide very precise information but only after the fact. Wireless sensors, moreover, can transmit data up to a kilometer away. That&#8217;s about four times the range of similar instruments tested by other studies, <strong>Thiago Almeida<\/strong>, the project manager, told A Cr\u00edtica.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/duthWoFCpvw?si=VypHH-RfzWSxZJaM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Tests in the Amazon prove effectiveness of sensors<\/h5>\n<p>The device, he pointed out, was <strong>successfully tested<\/strong> in a forest located at the side of the BR-174 highway, in the direction of Manaus-Presidente Figueiredo, in northern Amazonia. The tool identified attacks in progress by sending a message to the server.<\/p>\n<p>According to France Press, the project, funded by the Brazilian company <strong>Hana Electronics<\/strong>, has just completed its pilot phase. The test involved ten prototypes attached to trees. The authors, the agency continues, now hope to find new funding to add hundreds more sensors, including ones that can detect smoke and heat from <strong>fires<\/strong>. The trend was already reversed during Dilma Rousseff&#8217;s presidency. But it was with the election of <strong>Jair Bolsonaro<\/strong> in late 2018 that forest destruction accelerated dramatically. In 2022, in particular, the Brazilian NGO Imazon <a href=\"https:\/\/imazon.org.br\/imprensa\/amazonia-perdeu-quase-3-mil-campos-de-futebol-por-dia-de-floresta-em-2022-maior-desmatamento-em-15-anos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, the Amazon lost 10,573 square kilometers of forest, bringing the four-year total over 35,000.<\/p>\n<p>The re-election of <strong>Lula<\/strong>, who has promised to halt deforestation by 2030, has rekindled the hopes of activists and many observers. According to the Brazilian space agency <strong>INPE<\/strong>, deforestation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/deforestation-in-brazil-s-amazon-falls-66-in-august\/7256280.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declined by 48 percent<\/a> in the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2022. In September, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/deforestation-brazils-amazon-falls-57-september-2023-10-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, the decline was 56.8 percent year-on-year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of the Amazon has developed a tool to detect potential threats to the forest in the field.
