In contrast, &#8220;there is a need to support nature-friendly approaches&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The continued use of fossil-derived <strong>chemical fertilizers<\/strong> puts the UK&#8217;s net zero emissions targets at risk. This is argued by the <strong>Soil Association<\/strong>, a charity organization based in Bristol. The message comes along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/act.soilassociation.org\/fix-fertiliser?utm_source=web&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=fix_fertiliser&amp;utm_content=os_webpage&amp;_gl=1*x3bxma*_ga*ODcwNDQwODYyLjE2OTUxMjIyNzQ.*_ga_Y7GYF76FYR*MTY5NTEyMjI3NC4xLjEuMTY5NTEyNDE1MS4wLjAuMA..#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> asking the London government to develop a plan to phase out these products in agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The Soil Association, in particular, calls on the government to set a <strong>target for reducing<\/strong> the use of synthetic fertilizers by helping farmers set aside their use and supporting nature-friendly approaches starting with organic farming.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"9WAnlJmOUf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-sustainable-agriculture\/\">Double-edged nitrogen is one more reason for a sustainable agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Double-edged nitrogen is one more reason for a sustainable agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/nitrogen-sustainable-agriculture\/embed\/#?secret=iUsiLTQktD#?secret=9WAnlJmOUf\" data-secret=\"9WAnlJmOUf\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Agriculture is still addicted to fossil fuel<\/h5>\n<p>The initiative helps to lift the debate on the link between agriculture and <strong>fossil<\/strong> fuels. These sources, in fact, are used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciel.org\/news\/fossils-fertilizers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the extraction and production<\/a> of essential elements and substances such as hydrogen and ammonia that form the basis of nitrogen fertilizers themselves. Which, the Soil Association notes, remain extremely problematic, however.<\/p>\n<p>Nitrogen is &#8220;a key contributor to climate change when released as <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/urbanization-soil-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nitrous oxide<\/a>, which is 300 times more potent at warming the atmosphere than CO2,&#8221; the organization notes. In addition, farmers&#8217; reliance on fossil fuels &#8220;also makes them vulnerable to major price spikes and events like <strong>Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Px7XHEqkg3\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/\">Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Soil nitrogen is the one responsible for water pollution&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-nitrogen-pollution\/embed\/#?secret=He0NTM7Uwn#?secret=Px7XHEqkg3\" data-secret=\"Px7XHEqkg3\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Fertilizers in the crosshairs<\/h5>\n<p>Fertilizer use in global soils remains a central issue. Last year, FAO&#8217;s Global Assessment of Soil Pollution report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/cb4894en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted<\/a> how the impact of the most harmful human activities <strong>has grown in the 21st century<\/strong>. In 2018, in particular, the Planet&#8217;s soils absorbed <strong>109 million tons<\/strong> of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. A phenomenon that parallels the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing use<\/a> of pesticides (more 75 percent on a global scale between 2000 and 2017).<\/p>\n<p>The problems, however, are not confined to soils. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/bg.copernicus.org\/articles\/19\/3247\/2022\/#section4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by a group of scientists at Nagoya University in Japan, for example, showed how nitrogen from the soil is a major contributor to the<strong> contamination of waterways<\/strong>. And not without consequences. &#8220;Nitrate is an essential nutrient for plants and phytoplankton,&#8221; the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/researchinfo\/result-en\/2022\/10\/20221005-02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>. &#8220;But excessive nitrate levels in streams can damage water quality, cause <strong>eutrophication<\/strong> (the over-enrichment of water by nutrients), and pose health risks to animals and humans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0e7OVw0c3x\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/study-emissions-nitrogen-fertilizers\/\">A new project will monitor global nitrogen emissions from fertilizers<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;A new project will monitor global nitrogen emissions from fertilizers&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/study-emissions-nitrogen-fertilizers\/embed\/#?secret=QQFcTJ8syO#?secret=0e7OVw0c3x\" data-secret=\"0e7OVw0c3x\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>New solutions are needed<\/h5>\n<p>Today, said Soil Association agricultural policy manager <strong>Gareth Morgan<\/strong>, &#8220;Agriculture and the food system are responsible for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and failing to address this will mean that the government has simply no prospect of meeting its net zero target.&#8221; In this scenario, however, farmers can respond by promoting fertility through respectful agricultural practices involving the use of <strong>natural fertilizers<\/strong> and the adoption of other sustainable techniques, starting with crop rotations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3118\" style=\"width: 1040px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3118\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3118\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Schermata-2021-02-03-alle-14.17.17-1030x506.png\" alt=\"Emissioni nocive settore AFOLU (Agricoltura, foreste e usi del suolo) - Fonte: IPCC\" width=\"1030\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Schermata-2021-02-03-alle-14.17.17-1030x506.png 1030w, https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Schermata-2021-02-03-alle-14.17.17-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Schermata-2021-02-03-alle-14.17.17-768x378.png 768w, https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Schermata-2021-02-03-alle-14.17.17-705x347.png 705w, https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Schermata-2021-02-03-alle-14.17.17.png 1306w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harmful emissions AFOLU sector (Agriculture, forestry and land uses) &#8211; Source: IPCC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, the Soil Association mentions a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iddri.org\/en\/publications-and-events\/study\/agroecology-and-carbon-neutrality-europe-2050-what-are-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the French think tank <strong>IDDRI<\/strong>, which found that if Europe adopted to an all-organic or agroecological farming system coupled with key changes in people&#8217;s diets, a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would be experienced.
