This is supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/gcb.16652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in the journal Global Change Biology. Increasing <strong>urbanization<\/strong>, the research points out, results in the conversion of natural ecosystems to residential areas that incorporate green areas such as parks or lawns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such conversions affect ecosystem functions and impacts biodiversity, ecosystem services such as provision of clean water as well as the function of such ecosystems as climate regulators,&#8221; explains <strong>Klaus Butterbach-Bahl<\/strong>, a professor at Aarhus University involved in the research, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/agro.au.dk\/en\/current-news\/news\/show\/artikel\/researchers-urbanisation-amplifies-climate-change-through-increased-soil-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> released by the Danish university. The researchers, in particular, compiled data from several previous research studies to understand the release dynamics of <strong>nitrous oxide<\/strong> (N2O) and <strong>methane<\/strong> (CH4).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nitrous oxide, the statement highlights, is a <strong>powerful greenhouse gas<\/strong> that contributes to climate change and stratospheric ozone depletion. Key factors are increased deposition of the element that is released in <strong>fossil fuel combustion<\/strong> processes and altered soil conditions, such as <strong>compaction<\/strong> resulting from urban development.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In addition, conversion of natural lands to urban areas <strong>reduces the capacity of soils to absorb methane<\/strong>, leading to higher atmospheric concentrations of this greenhouse gas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;On average, urbanization increases soil N2O emissions by <strong>153%, to 3.0\u2009kg\u2009N per hectare per year<\/strong>, while rates of soil CH4 uptake <strong>are reduced by 50%<\/strong>, to 2.0\u2009kg\u2009C\u2009per hectare per year,&#8221; the study states. Moreover, &#8220;On a global basis, conversion of land to urban greenspaces has increased soil N2O emission by 0.46\u2009Tg\u2009N2O-N\u2009per year and decreased soil CH4 uptake by 0.58\u2009Tg\u2009CH4-C per year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Q8wGnsL8u9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/forest-carbon-nitrogen\/\">Variety of trees promotes carbon and nitrogen sequestration<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Variety of trees promotes carbon and nitrogen sequestration&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/forest-carbon-nitrogen\/embed\/#?secret=RajG3zpSDt#?secret=Q8wGnsL8u9\" data-secret=\"Q8wGnsL8u9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Sustainable solutions<\/h5>\n<p>These phenomena, the research continues, &#8220;are associated with changes in soil properties (bulk density, pH, total N content, and C\/N ratio), increased temperature, and management practices, especially <strong>fertilizer use<\/strong>.&#8221; These effects, however, &#8220;can be mitigated by avoiding soil compaction, reducing fertilization of lawns, and by restoring native ecosystems in urban landscapes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;These<strong> nature-based interventions<\/strong> can help sequester carbon, reduce emissions, and enhance the resilience of urban environments,&#8221; Butterbach-Bahl explains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By prioritizing sustainable urban planning, the statement says, cities can adopt strategies to<strong> reduce greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>, increase <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/uk-forests-carbon-sequestration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon sequestration<\/a> and improve overall environmental quality.
