This was argued by the president of the UN Conference on Desertification, <strong>Alain-Richard Donwahi<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/aug\/12\/global-heating-likely-to-hit-world-food-supply-faster-than-expected-says-united-nations-desertification-expert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> by the Guardian. &#8220;I think it\u2019s going even faster than we predicted,&#8221; said the former Ivorian defense minister. He added, &#8220;Everyone is fixated on <strong>1.5C [above pre-industrial levels]<\/strong>, and it\u2019s a very important target. But not only that. Also crucial, in fact, are poor agricultural practices that impact soil health.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The <strong>degradation of soil<\/strong> comes with bad habits, and the way we do our <strong>agriculture<\/strong> will lead to degradation of the soil. When the soil is affected, the yield is affected,&#8221; he explained.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this framework, the former minister called into question the role of private investors whose commitment could support the changes needed to ensure better land use and the implementation of good practices including <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mixed-agriculture-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agroforestry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"MxZ9aW7n25\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-nutrients-food-crisis\/\">FAO: &#8220;Soil protection is the first response to the global food crisis&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;FAO: &#8220;Soil protection is the first response to the global food crisis&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-nutrients-food-crisis\/embed\/#?secret=9fSkmFI3TA#?secret=MxZ9aW7n25\" data-secret=\"MxZ9aW7n25\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Food crisis affects one in ten humans<\/h5>\n<p>Donwahi&#8217;s words follow disturbing estimates released by the <strong>FAO<\/strong> in its report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/cc0639en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022&#8243;<\/a>. &#8220;After remaining relatively unchanged since 2015,&#8221; the study published in December last year stated, &#8220;the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) <strong>jumped from 8.0 to 9.3 percent<\/strong> from 2019 to 2020 and rose at a slower pace in 2021 to 9.8 percent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Moreover, \u201c<strong>Between 702 and 828 million people<\/strong> were affected by hunger in 2021. The number has grown by about 150 million since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic \u2013 103 million more people between 2019 and 2020 and <strong>46 million more in 2021<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Without a change of course, the FAO continued, the risk is that in 2030 8 percent of the world&#8217;s population or 670 million people will still be hungry. Even taking into account moderate food insecurity, the amount of human beings forced to cope with some form of food shortage reaches 2.3 billion. <strong>3.1 billion<\/strong>, on the other hand, are the individuals who do not have access to a healthy diet. This is 112 million more people than in 2019.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"sHgvj0rpft\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mediterranean-forests-face-desertification\/\">Mediterranean forests face desertification risk<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Mediterranean forests face desertification risk&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/mediterranean-forests-face-desertification\/embed\/#?secret=RFJWWWqEG8#?secret=sHgvj0rpft\" data-secret=\"sHgvj0rpft\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>From the UN a warning on desertification<\/h5>\n<p>Finally, <strong>desertification<\/strong>, a widespread, worrisome yet still <strong>underestimated<\/strong> phenomenon, writes the Guardian. &#8220;Last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/cop15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cop15 on desertification<\/a> went largely unnoticed compared with the climate Cop27 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/biodiversita-cop15-rigenerazione-ambiente\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodiversity Cop15 last December<\/a>,&#8221; the British newspaper points out. And again, &#8220;Desertification Cops are held less frequently than climate summits: the next desertification conference will be held in <strong>Riyadh<\/strong> in <strong>December 2024<\/strong>, while the next climate summit, Cop28, will be in Dubai in late November.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Donwahi says, the world cannot afford to ignore the phenomenon. &#8220;We need to solve all the problems together,&#8221; he further explains to the Guardian. &#8220;Desertification and drought leads to climate change, leads to loss of biodiversity. And when you have climate change you have <strong>droughts, floods, storms<\/strong>.&#8221; These events know no borders and therefore, the former Ivorian minister points out, affect all countries on the Planet, not just the poorest nations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was stated by the president of the UN Conference on Desertification, Alain-Richard Donwahi.
