This is supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downforce.tech\/news-and-events\/view\/improving-soil-could-keep-world-within-1.5c-heating-target-research-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> carried out by <strong>Downforce Technologies<\/strong>, a company based in Oxford, U.K., that is specialized in collecting and marketing soil data.<\/p>\n<p>The study, which has not yet been made public, was quoted by <strong>Jacqueline McGlade<\/strong>, co-founder of Downforce and former executive director of the European Environment Agency (EEA), whose declarations were reported by the Guardian.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"hwH8JLkgxa\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/canada-carbon-project\/\">Canadian researchers start a soil carbon measurement project<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Canadian researchers start a soil carbon measurement project&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/canada-carbon-project\/embed\/#?secret=OvaNYdz8oO#?secret=hwH8JLkgxa\" data-secret=\"hwH8JLkgxa\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The emission gap is almost entirely closed<\/h5>\n<p>According to McGlade, in particular, by applying a series of simple strategies, the amount of carbon sequestered in the top 30 centimeters of agricultural soils could <strong>increase by 1 percent<\/strong>. The rise may seem small, but the figure, in absolute value, is impressive: <strong>31 billion tons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This amount virtually equals the difference between the total planned global emissions cut between now and 2030 and the amount believed to be needed to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C in comparison with the pre-industrial era. This &#8220;gap&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/emissions-gap-report-2022?gclid=CjwKCAjw-vmkBhBMEiwAlrMeF2RXxBC0am9tu8mkEYC6-UkrODFNYXy2sWMghns7-fJxaW996PRXNhoCirgQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is estimated<\/a> by the United Nations at <strong>32 billion tons of carbon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0jfcIenQFm\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-soil-climate-change\/\">Subsoil carbon is particularly vulnerable to climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Subsoil carbon is particularly vulnerable to climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-soil-climate-change\/embed\/#?secret=RpPJKxXk75#?secret=0jfcIenQFm\" data-secret=\"0jfcIenQFm\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>From rotation to cover crops<\/h5>\n<p>The strategies quoted by the Guardian to increase carbon sequestration in soils include <strong>crop rotation<\/strong> and the planting of <strong>cover crops<\/strong>, as well as the use of so-called <strong>direct drilling<\/strong>, which allows crops to be planted without plowing. Farmers also could improve their soils by growing more native grasses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Also important is the role of <strong>hedgerows<\/strong>, which promote the proliferation of mycorrhizal <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-climate-fungi-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fungi<\/a> and <strong>microbes<\/strong> that contribute to element sequestration.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Farmers have spent decades removing hedgerows to make intensive farming easier,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jul\/04\/improving-farming-soil-carbon-store-global-heating-target\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a> the British newspaper. &#8220;But restoring them, and maintaining existing hedgerows, <strong>would improve biodiversity<\/strong>, reduce the erosion of topsoil, and help to stop harmful agricultural runoff, which is a key polluter of rivers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GyID3orbn8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-fungi-forest-climate\/\">Can soil fungi counteract climate change?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Can soil fungi counteract climate change?&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-fungi-forest-climate\/embed\/#?secret=2OaAhzEUaF#?secret=GyID3orbn8\" data-secret=\"GyID3orbn8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Healthier and more profitable soils<\/h5>\n<p>Downforce&#8217;s estimate once again highlights the weight of so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/smart-agriculture-congo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate smart<\/a>&#8221; practices, or agricultural techniques that harness the ability of soils to help reduce emissions. &#8220;Outside the farming sector, people do not understand how important soils are to the climate,&#8221; McGlade told the British newspaper.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Changing farming practices, she added, &#8220;could make soils <strong>carbon negative<\/strong>\u00a0(capable of generating <strong>permanent removal of CO2<\/strong> from the ecosystem, ed.), making them absorb carbon, and reducing the cost of farming.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the short term, the study&#8217;s lead author recalls, farmers may face an <strong>initial cost increase<\/strong> from changing methods. &#8220;But after a transition period of two to three years their <strong>yields would improve<\/strong> and their soils would be <strong>much<\/strong> <strong>healthier<\/strong>,&#8221; the Guardian recalls. Finally, the increased sequestration capacity from the soils would allow farmers to earn emission credits that could be sold on the market.
