But fires are also on the rise, having never been so extensive since 2007<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deforestation in the <strong>Brazilian Amazon<\/strong> is slowing down, falling by about a third year-on-year. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/mma\/pt-br\/alertas-de-desmatamento-na-amazonia-caem-34-no-semestre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was announced<\/a> by the government, which released the results of Deter, the satellite survey system of INPE, the National Institute for Space Research. On balance, deforestation would have affected <strong>approximately 2,650 km2<\/strong> compared to almost 4,000 in the first half of 2022. However, the figures released by the authorities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-66129200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> the British broadcaster BBC, have not been independently verified.<\/p>\n<p>From the government&#8217;s point of view, of course, the numbers take on implicit political value, highlighting a reversal of the trends that emerged during <strong>Jair Bolsonaro<\/strong>&#8216;s presidency. &#8216;The 34 per cent drop recorded between January and June this year in the Amazon comes after a 54 per cent increase recorded from August to December 2022 under the previous government,&#8217; an official statement said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"pt\" dir=\"ltr\">Os dados foram apresentados em entrevista coletiva no MMA, em Bras\u00edlia, nesta quinta-feira (6\/7).<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pgwe7REXUf\">https:\/\/t.co\/Pgwe7REXUf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Minist\u00e9rio do Meio Ambiente e Mudan\u00e7a do Clima (@mmeioambiente) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mmeioambiente\/status\/1677346192693374976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 7, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>A nightmarish 2022 for the Amazon<\/h5>\n<p>The year 2022 was the Amazon&#8217;s annus horribilis. In 12 months, the Brazilian NGO Imazon <a href=\"https:\/\/imazon.org.br\/imprensa\/amazonia-perdeu-quase-3-mil-campos-de-futebol-por-dia-de-floresta-em-2022-maior-desmatamento-em-15-anos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, the regipn lost the equivalent of almost 3,000 football pitches a day. Between January and December 2022, the destruction affected <strong>10,573 square kilometres<\/strong>, bringing the total over the last four years to over 35,000.<\/p>\n<p>During the first months of 2023, contradictory data were recorded. In January, deforestation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/2\/10\/brazil-amazon-deforestation-drops-in-lulas-first-month-in-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fallen by 61 per cent<\/a> year-on-year. In February, the total deforestation of the Amazon amounted to 322 square kilometres, 62% more than in the same period the previous year, the <strong>highest monthly figure ever recorded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7ZwkW1V6Gu\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-deforestation-lula-brazil\/\">Record monthly deforestation in the Amazon is alarming for Lula<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Record monthly deforestation in the Amazon is alarming for Lula&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-deforestation-lula-brazil\/embed\/#?secret=TxkWynx8yn#?secret=7ZwkW1V6Gu\" data-secret=\"7ZwkW1V6Gu\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A reversal of the trend<\/h5>\n<p>Blamed for years for accelerating the phenomenon <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-funds-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by easing regulations and controls<\/a>, Bolsonaro, elected at the end of 2018, was defeated in the October 2022 elections by leftist candidate <strong>Lula da Silva<\/strong>, former head of state from 2003 to 2011. This year, the government recalls, the Brazilian Institute of Renewable and Environmental Natural Resources (IBAMA) &#8211; an agency of the Ministry of the Environment &#8211; has intensified controls and sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Fines for offences against natural resources, in particular, are reported <strong>to have increased by 166%<\/strong> compared to the average of the January-June period in the last four years. Image: Minist\u00e9rio do Meio Ambiente e Mudan\u00e7a do Clima, July 2023<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>But fires are on the rise<\/h5>\n<p>Earlier this year, Lula decreed the recognition of six new <strong>native community reserves<\/strong>, banning mining and restricting commercial agriculture. &#8220;Indigenous leaders welcomed the move,&#8221; the BBC reports, &#8220;but stressed that more areas needed protection&#8221;. In the meantime, however, the good news in recent days is matched by worrying data on the spread of the flames.<\/p>\n<p>In June alone, satellite monitoring detected <strong>3,075 fires<\/strong> in the Amazon, the highest number since 2007. &#8220;Many of the blazes &#8211; releasing vast amounts of carbon emissions &#8211; have been linked to the clearing of previously deforested areas,&#8221; the British broadcaster concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The numbers, which have not been verified by an independent authority, would mark a turnaround for the Amazon after a particularly bad 2022.
