These products, known as PFASs and contained in pesticides, are typically difficult to dispose of<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pollution levels from <strong>fluorine-based substances<\/strong> in soil and air are reportedly higher than previously thought. This is suggested by a U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/data\/statewide-survey-shallow-soil-concentrations-and-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-pfas-and-related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> conducted in the state of New Hampshire. The researchers, in particular, found high levels of <strong>PFAS<\/strong> or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, in a hundred soil samples taken at shallow depths in areas far from the best-known sources of contamination.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/may\/26\/pfas-ground-air-pollution-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a> The Guardian, &#8220;the chemicals are thought to largely have gotten there through the air.&#8221; <strong>Mindi Messmer<\/strong>, a former member of the <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong> House of Representatives, quoted by the British newspaper, called the results of the investigation &#8216;pretty disturbing&#8217; highlighting the risks to people&#8217;s health. &#8220;However it got here, it\u2019s there and it is widespread,, &#8221; she explained. &#8220;It\u2019s the fault of decades of regulatory inaction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"M8JcnwpN5V\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/germany-pesticides-reduction\/\">Germany, the reduction in the use of pesticides is still too slow<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Germany, the reduction in the use of pesticides is still too slow&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/germany-pesticides-reduction\/embed\/#?secret=laxCqzsxdB#?secret=M8JcnwpN5V\" data-secret=\"M8JcnwpN5V\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Fluorine products do not go away easily<\/h5>\n<p>PFASs are not surprisingly called forever chemicals because of their <strong>persistence in soils<\/strong>. &#8220;Such chemicals are both highly stable and useful in products designed to repel grease and water. But it also means they do not readily biodegrade,&#8221; the journal Scientific American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/pesticides-are-spreading-toxic-lsquo-forever-chemicals-rsquo-scientists-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>, highlighting the relevance of this characteristic.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These substances are typically found in <strong>fluorinated pesticides<\/strong> &#8211; those that contain one or more fluorine atoms in their molecular structure &#8211; which are considered particularly effective in combating plant <strong>pests<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What favors their antiparasitic action is precisely their recognized chemical stability, which promotes their prolonged action while limiting their disposal margins. <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/flourinated-pesticides-health-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It is estimated<\/a> that the half-life of some fluorinated pesticides &#8211; that is, the time it takes for their presence in the environment to be halved after spraying -can be as long as <strong>2 1\/2 years<\/strong>. The EPA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, defines &#8220;persistent&#8221; as pollutants characterized by a half-life of not less than 60 days.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Twz4sBImCx\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/us-soil-health-survey\/\">Researchers in the U.S. launch five-year soil health survey<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Researchers in the U.S. launch five-year soil health survey&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/us-soil-health-survey\/embed\/#?secret=8Q2vNYNfFi#?secret=Twz4sBImCx\" data-secret=\"Twz4sBImCx\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>In New Hampshire, &#8220;<strong>At all 100 locations<\/strong>, samples were collected from 0 (land surface) to 6 inches in depth. At 50 locations, samples from 6 to 12 inches depth were collected, while at 6 of these locations soil profiles were collected in 6-inch increments to a maximum of 36 inches in depth,&#8221; the study states. The analysis showed the presence of PFAS in all the observed samples.<\/p>\n<p>As the Guardian points out, &#8220;<strong>No limits on PFAS<\/strong> in soil exist federally or in New Hampshire, but the levels are millions of times higher than the US Environmental Protection Agency advisory drinking water threshold for some common PFAS compounds.&#8221; Also according to the newspaper, &#8220;Many of the contaminated sites would trigger remediation in Massachusetts, New Hampshire\u2019s southern neighbor, which set limits for individual compounds in soil between 0.3 and 2 ppb.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gyU6Tz9Mq0\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/\">Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Pesticides rule in U.S. farmland as 146,000 MT of banned chemicals are in place&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-usa-pesticides\/embed\/#?secret=j0RqRmMnQU#?secret=gyU6Tz9Mq0\" data-secret=\"gyU6Tz9Mq0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A global problem<\/h5>\n<p>Fluorine pollution is not just an American problem. Last year, the Guardian still recalls, research by Stockholm University <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.2c02765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that the presence of PFAS in rainwater on a global scale <strong>exceeds the safety limits<\/strong> set by several national and supranational authorities. Including those of the United States, Denmark, the Netherlands and the European Union. And that &#8220;atmospheric deposition also leads to global soils being<strong> ubiquitously contaminated<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Also of concern is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/feb\/11\/michigan-beef-dangerous-levels-forever-chemicals?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expansion of sales<\/a> of pesticides containing PFAS. In the late 20th century, the market share of fluorinated products stood at around 9 percent. Today, by contrast, they are booming.
