Measurement is shortened by 100 times<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Optimizing irrigation, that is, <strong>not wasting water<\/strong> through real-time knowledge of plant and soil hydration levels. That is the goal set by researchers at <strong>Stanford University<\/strong> in California, who have designed an innovative tool for reducing consumption. The technology, explains a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/press-releases\/2023\/04\/27\/better-faster-toving-water-farms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the university, quickly estimates water loss from the soil due to evapotranspiration, or the <strong>evaporation<\/strong> of water into the atmosphere and its absorption by plants.<\/p>\n<p>According to the designers, the new tool allows the information to be processed &#8220;100 times faster while maintaining high levels of accuracy.&#8221; The idea is to drastically reduce the time it takes to process <strong>irrigation<\/strong> schedules by placing equipment in the best possible way. This operation, in other words, takes into account only top-down water movement while ignoring <strong>horizontal flows<\/strong> with the aim of simplifying calculations. &#8220;While adequate in some large-scale applications,&#8221; says a <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2023WR034535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by Stanford University, &#8220;this assumption fails when the horizontal component of the local flow velocity is not negligible due to, for example, soil heterogeneity or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drip_irrigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drip irrigation<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The need to measure and describe flows in each direction is essential for the development of <strong>anti-waste practices<\/strong> beginning with drip irrigation, which allows water to be distributed slowly and <strong>precisely<\/strong> to plant roots, thus limiting evaporation. This technique is mainly used in arid regions where water consumption is typically higher.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gjDs4SmNaN\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-for-healthy-diet\/\">Sustainable agriculture is the leading way to a healthy diet, FAO says<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Sustainable agriculture is the leading way to a healthy diet, FAO says&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-for-healthy-diet\/embed\/#?secret=9DL96Qes9Z#?secret=gjDs4SmNaN\" data-secret=\"gjDs4SmNaN\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Algorithms are crucial<\/h5>\n<p>The new measurement tool is based on the combination of <strong>two different algorithms<\/strong> known as enhanced Kalman filter and maximum likelihood estimation. &#8220;We plug real data measurements of soil moisture and root water uptake into our model, which improves our understanding of the overall physical system and the algorithm\u2019s performance,&#8221; explained Weiyu Li, researcher and lead author of the research.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our study is the first to combine this kind of <strong>algorithmic approach<\/strong> and apply it to drip irrigation.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The simulation, conducted on a plot of about 3 by 3 meters, yielded excellent results. The precise calculation of the evapotranspiration rate took only about <strong>ten minutes<\/strong>. The researchers&#8217; goal is to test the system on farms to enable them <strong>to optimize irrigation<\/strong>. This is something that is becoming increasingly important, as the <strong>FAO<\/strong> has mentioned in the past.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Indeed, the UN organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i7959e\/i7959e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> that at the end of the 20th century agriculture was responsible for an average of <strong>70 percent of global water withdrawals<\/strong>. Without adequate corrections these will increase by another 14 percent by 2030.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The interconnected systems of land, soil and water are stretched to the limit with agricultural systems at breaking point,&#8221; <strong>Feras Ziadat<\/strong>, coordinator of the 2021 edition of <em>The state of the world&#8217;s land and water resources for food and agriculture<\/em> report produced by FAO, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soil-water-agriculture-fao-solaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> to Re Soil Foundation.
