These are the conclusions of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2071-1050\/15\/6\/4832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by researchers at the <strong>Agricultural University in Khulna<\/strong>, Bangladesh. The investigation was carried out in a neighboring area and measured the effects of the product in combination with the recommended dose of fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Using biochar in saline soil significantly influenced <strong>tomato growth and yield<\/strong> character,&#8221; the study states. &#8220;Days after planting, plant height was dramatically impacted by various biochar treatment levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"J4XaEKEXp4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crop-yields-rock-emissions\/\">Rock dust pushes crop yields higher and CO2 emissions down<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Rock dust pushes crop yields higher and CO2 emissions down&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/crop-yields-rock-emissions\/embed\/#?secret=KxWaTAs5Hn#?secret=J4XaEKEXp4\" data-secret=\"J4XaEKEXp4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Salt threatens soil<\/h5>\n<p>Created by thermochemical conversion of biomass through so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/meraviglioso-mondo-biochar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slow pyrolysis<\/a>, biochar &#8220;has been found to have beneficial effects on the soil\u2019s <strong>microbiota<\/strong>, microbial community, and nutrient status,&#8221; the authors say. &#8220;However, there is scant literature on how biochar alters soil properties and the stress caused by <strong>salinity<\/strong>.&#8221; Investigation of the substance&#8217;s effectiveness in this context assumes extremely important significance given the scale of the problem on a global level.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Indeed, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/newsroom\/detail\/salt-affected-soils-map-symposium\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAO<\/a>, excess salt affects <strong>20 to 50 percent of all agricultural land<\/strong> on the Planet, &#8220;meaning <strong>over 1.5 billion people worldwide<\/strong> face significant challenges in growing food due to soil degradation.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The effects of salinity are most evident in coastal areas and could worsen due to climate change, according to researchers. This is no small problem for <strong>Bangladesh<\/strong>, which is managing more than 30 percent of its agricultural land in these environments with the risk of experiencing declining productivity.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8LITft3Odu\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-salt-world-crops\/\">&#8220;Excess salt threatens up to 50% of global crops&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;&#8220;Excess salt threatens up to 50% of global crops&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-salt-world-crops\/embed\/#?secret=gOJJSHLG7S#?secret=8LITft3Odu\" data-secret=\"8LITft3Odu\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Biochar is good for crops<\/h5>\n<p>Conducted between July 2021 and June 2022, the experiment compared yields in soils treated with biochar with those found in soils to which only <strong>fertilizer<\/strong> had been applied or which had not been treated. &#8220;The application of varying concentrations of biochar in conjunction with the recommended amount of fertilizer significantly influenced <strong>the overall height of tomato plants<\/strong>,&#8221; the authors write. \u201cThis resulted in a significant increase.&#8221; With obvious positive effects on total yield.<\/p>\n<p>The use of biochar also <strong>reduced the salinity of treated soils<\/strong>. The substance, the researchers explain, works by immobilizing sodium ions, limiting their uptake by plants. This research, in particular, &#8220;showed that increasing the amount of biochar to 2 tons per hectare <strong>effectively reverses the fruit-yield loss<\/strong> caused by salinity and decreases the amount of sodium accumulated in the roots and fruit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"hBVOD69OEX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/india-app-soil-carbon\/\">A new soil app from India can teach you climate-smart agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;A new soil app from India can teach you climate-smart agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/india-app-soil-carbon\/embed\/#?secret=yUYxEwKNEG#?secret=hBVOD69OEX\" data-secret=\"hBVOD69OEX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Carbon content increases<\/h5>\n<p>Also important are the effects on soil properties. &#8220;Organic matter in the soil influences soil health, microbial activity, nutrient cycling, and water retention (SOM),&#8221; the researchers write. &#8220;Soil biochar has been shown to increase its <strong>C content<\/strong>, its ability to <strong>retain water<\/strong>, and the strength of aggregates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Application of the substance, in fact, improves and preserves the physical and chemical properties of saline soils by increasing the element&#8217;s <strong>sequestration potential<\/strong>.
