Thousands of soil samples extracted from UK farmland<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Emanuele Isonio<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of <strong>soil samples <\/strong>taken on farmland across the UK. A painstaking job to analyze the <strong>health condition<\/strong> of the soils of Maest\u00e0 di lei. It was carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/cawood.co.uk\/nrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NRM<\/a>, the largest independent British supplier of agronomic and environmental analyzes at the service of industry. The results? Certainly worrying: two-thirds of the country&#8217;s agricultural soils show signs of degradation. And in particular a deficiency of the <strong>fundamental nutritional elements.<\/strong> The data is contained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cawood.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Soil-Summary-2022-digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NRM annual summary report.<\/a><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">A thirty-year trend<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;This soil summary has once again confirmed a trend that we&#8217;ve observed for the last 30 years: that most soils are deficient in the three key nutrients,&#8221; said Sajjad Awan, NRM&#8217;s chief agronomist. Obviously the situation is different from county to county: &#8220;It&#8217;s also interesting to look at trends and variations across the different regions in the UK to see how we&#8217;re doing on a more specific level&#8221; added Awan. Some examples: &#8220;while arable soils in Dorset in the South West of England are high in phosphorus and soil pH, those in Worcestershire in the West Midlands are low in phosphorus and middling in soil pH&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the <strong>most interesting results,<\/strong> one concerns the comparison of the levels of the main nutrients between 2022 and the previous year. For example, wheat crops had about 10% less nitrogen and a quarter less phosphorus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe had a colder and drier spring in 2022, which prevented soil mineralisation, a necessary process that allows nutrients to be taken up by the crop&#8221; Awain explained. \u201cThe situation was made even worse by the soil moisture deficit during the hot, dry summer, which was then exacerbated by the rapid crop growth. The crops therefore could not absorb everything they needed to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"GWCcPDaqFr\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-dependence-phosphorus\/\">Global agriculture must reduce its dependence on phosphorus<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Global agriculture must reduce its dependence on phosphorus&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-dependence-phosphorus\/embed\/#?secret=Del9RV8LnM#?secret=GWCcPDaqFr\" data-secret=\"GWCcPDaqFr\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Humidity falling<\/h5>\n<p>Moreover, the decrease in soil moisture content is not a sporadic event. More recently, it was confirmed by the <strong>European Space Agency<\/strong> itself which, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/FutureEO\/SMOS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMOS<\/a> (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) satellite, compared the situation in the first quarter of 2023 with that of 2022. The humidity rate, in the first three months of this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/precipitation-relative-humidity-and-soil-moisture-february-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decreased by an average of 4%<\/a>, with peaks that however reached 8%. And among the continental areas where the impact of drought is most visible is the <strong>United Kingdom.<\/strong> An alarm both for the <strong>water supply<\/strong> of agricultural enterprises and for<strong> land yields<\/strong> and food security.<\/p>\n<p>NRM data also underscores the importance of analyzing soil conditions throughout the year to adjust agricultural plans in near real-time. \u201cThis not only <strong>helps crop performance,<\/strong> but also improves <strong>nutrient use efficiency.<\/strong> In this way, the losses of nitrates and phosphates to the environment are reduced,\u201d added Awan. \u201cSustainable agriculture and the shift to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/canada-traditional-agriculture-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greener practices<\/a> go hand in hand with increased productivity. Using innovative crop analytics to guide our management decisions is a huge part of this process.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>An interactive map for farmers<\/h5>\n<p>Alongside its annual report, the British NRM has also updated its <a href=\"http:\/\/soilsummary.enidata.co.uk\/.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interactive soil map.<\/a> A tool that allows farmers and their agronomic consultants to <strong>drill down on crop type<\/strong> and nutrient summaries for their region and county.
