The study used data from the Climate Change Initiative of <strong>ESA<\/strong>, the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers showed how <strong>degraded forests<\/strong> and restoration-prone areas in the tropics remove at least <strong>107 million tons of carbon<\/strong> from the atmosphere each year. This amount, an ESA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/Space_for_our_climate\/Recovering_forests_regain_a_quarter_of_carbon_lost_from_deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> says, equals, by comparison, half of South America&#8217;s annual fossil fuel emissions. But it is not enough to make up for the overall damage caused by deforestation.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"OQr7h0z0n2\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-forests-lost-more-carbon-tha-expected\/\">Forests are losing far more carbon than expected thus worsening climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Forests are losing far more carbon than expected thus worsening climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-forests-lost-more-carbon-tha-expected\/embed\/#?secret=Hvg6Y1iRZV#?secret=OQr7h0z0n2\" data-secret=\"OQr7h0z0n2\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Carbon offset is just 26 percent<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Recovering tropical secondary and degraded forests now cover about 10% of the tropical forest area, but how much carbon they accumulate remains uncertain,&#8221; the research states. &#8220;On the basis of<strong> satellite data<\/strong> products, our analysis encompasses the heterogeneous spatial and temporal patterns of growth in degraded and secondary forests, influenced by key environmental and anthropogenic drivers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In restored areas, the study notes, the total amount of carbon recovered is sufficient to offset <strong>26 percent of carbon emissions<\/strong> initially released due to the destruction and degradation of wet tropical forests.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Our study provides the first pan-tropical, regional-scale estimates of carbon absorption in tropical forests recovering from degradation and deforestation,&#8221; says <strong>Viola Heinrich<\/strong>, a researcher at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter and co-author of the survey.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oMwfU5wNvM\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/collagen-amazon-deforestation\/\">Collagen industry drives deforestation in the Amazon<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Collagen industry drives deforestation in the Amazon&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/collagen-amazon-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=5V6Qu4WVDk#?secret=oMwfU5wNvM\" data-secret=\"oMwfU5wNvM\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The record of Borneo&#8217;s forests<\/h5>\n<p>Using ESA satellite data and information on above-ground biomass occurrence and environmental variables, researchers analyzed forest regrowth in the<strong> Amazon, Central Africa and the island of Borneo<\/strong> where the main driver of deforestation is the expansion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indonesia-paper-palm-oil-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">palm oil<\/a> industry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In the first 20\u2009years of recovery, regrowth rates in Borneo were <strong>up to 45% and 58%<\/strong> <strong>higher<\/strong> than in Central Africa and the Amazon, respectively,&#8221; the study further states. &#8220;This is due to variables such as <strong>temperature<\/strong>, water deficit and disturbance regimes.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Borneo&#8217;s degraded forests, in other words, showed a much faster rate of <strong>carbon accumulation<\/strong> when compared with other regions. Restoration efforts, in each case, have been partial. In fact, one-third of forest areas degraded by logging or fire have since been completely cleared. &#8220;There are many forests across the tropics that have experienced severe, unsustainable, human-disturbances,&#8221; Heinrich added.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jDGNHavwdJ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/coal-biomass-indonesia-deforestation\/\">Coal-to-biomass transition fuels deforestation in Indonesia<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Coal-to-biomass transition fuels deforestation in Indonesia&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/coal-biomass-indonesia-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=CAuxlcIT8z#?secret=jDGNHavwdJ\" data-secret=\"jDGNHavwdJ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Conservation is worth 53 million tons of carbon per year<\/h5>\n<p>The satellite data used allow to describe changes in areas since the 1980s. Combining this information with <strong>biomass<\/strong> information has made it possible to estimate above-ground carbon accumulation in recovering forests throughout the tropics. Also for the future.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Protecting <strong>old-growth<\/strong> forests is therefore a priority,&#8221; the research states. &#8220;Furthermore, we estimate that conserving recovering degraded and secondary forests can have a feasible future carbon sink potential of <strong>53\u2009Tg\u2009C\u2009year\u22121<\/strong> across the main tropical regions studied.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers&#8217; findings provide new support for the policy initiatives launched after <strong>COP26 in Glasgow<\/strong> with the release of the Declaration on Forests and Land Use, which set a goal of halting and reversing forest loss and land degradation by 2030. &#8220;Satellite Earth observations can not only help us to monitor deforestation, but they can also provide valuable information on secondary and degraded forests, such as the dynamic of their recovery and how much carbon they accumulate,&#8221; explained <strong>Clement Albergel<\/strong>, ESA climate applications expert. &#8220;This information is crucial to inform policymakers and support policy implementation.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Degraded forests and restoration areas in the tropics remove 107 million tons of carbon each year.
