This is claimed by an investigation conducted by a pool of reporters from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebureauinvestigates.com\/stories\/2023-03-06\/collagen-wellness-industrys-star-product-drives-deforestation-and-rights-abuses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Investigative Journalism<\/a>, the British newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/06\/collagen-linked-brazilian-deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, the U.K. online broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2023-03-06\/collagen-sold-in-uk-linked-to-amazon-deforestation-joint-investigation-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITV<\/a>, and the Brazilian investigative website <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ojoioeotrigo.com.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">O Joio e O Trigo<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The links between beef and soya and deforestation in Brazil are well known, but little attention has been given to the booming collagen industry, worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gminsights.com\/industry-analysis\/collagen-market?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-NaJBhDsARIsAAja6dPaRd5QNZwjPSye9UbwyHwQ2tlRAWWUj5mTklxKLEdQBjWH5OR_rrMaAuJUEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an estimated $4bn<\/a>,&#8221; writes the Guardian. &#8220;Collagen can be extracted from fish, pigs and <strong>cattle<\/strong>. Its most evangelical users claim the protein can improve hair, skin, nails and joints, slowing the ageing process. As well as beauty and wellness brands, it is also used by pharmaceutical companies and those producing food ingredients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8Collagen is the wonder product for skin, ageing and health \u2013 but what about the health of the planet?<\/p>\n<p>Our reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lilimendonca?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@lilimendonca<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewwasley?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@andrewwasley<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZukerFabio?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ZukerFabio<\/a> connected the booming industry to deforestation and invasion of Indigenous lands in Brazil <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Qh7nJIc1WT\">pic.twitter.com\/Qh7nJIc1WT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Bureau (@TBIJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TBIJ\/status\/1632713008064413697?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>The investigation in the Amazon<\/h5>\n<p>Under the reporters&#8217; lens, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports, is cattle raised by some companies <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-deforestation-lula-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked to deforestation<\/a> and processed in slaughterhouses serving international collagen supply chains. Among the buyers of the product is <strong>Vital Proteins<\/strong>, a company owned by <strong>Nestl\u00e9<\/strong>. When questioned by the bureau, the same company indicated that it would &#8220;end sourcing from the Amazon region effective immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The investigation, then, attributed at least <strong>2,600 square kilometers of deforestation<\/strong> to ranching activities linked to the supply chains of two Brazilian companies: <strong>Rousselot<\/strong> and <strong>Gelnex<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rousselot is a subsidiary of Texas-based Darling Ingredients. Darling is reportedly in the process of acquiring Gelnex for an amount of about <strong>$1.2 billion<\/strong>. &#8220;Darling Ingredients told TBIJ that the company and its subsidiary Rousselot monitor their suppliers and remove those that don\u2019t meet responsible sourcing criteria,&#8221; the bureau writes. The U.S. company would not comment on Gelmex since the acquisition has not yet been finalized.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/grRr5lEml34\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>Allegations of violence against native communities<\/h5>\n<p>According to reporters, the <strong>supply chains<\/strong> for Brazilian bovine collagen are very complex and involve several middlemen. &#8220;Peptan&#8221; collagen, marketed by Rousselot, is the world&#8217;s leading brand and is exported to the United States and Europe. Supplying the cow skins is a tannery called BluBrasil and located in Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;That complex is owned by <strong>Marfrig<\/strong>, one of Brazil\u2019s \u201cBig Three\u201d beef businesses,&#8221; the bureau writes. &#8220;Marfrig\u2019s cattle suppliers have been linked to the destruction of tropical forests and <strong>encroachment on the territory of the Guarani Kaoiw\u00e1 Indigenous People<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover: &#8220;In 2021, the plant purchased animals from the Campan\u00e1rio farm, a large property violating the Guarani Kaiow\u00e1 territory in Laguna Carap\u00e3, also in Mato Grosso do Sul. The area is notorious for its high rate of violence against Indigenous people. Marfrig told the Bureau that only a small portion of the property is on top of the <strong>ancestral land<\/strong>, which the company says is not fully recognised as Indigenous territory. The owner of Campan\u00e1rio farm did not respond to the Bureau\u2019s request for comment. Nor did BluBrasil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mGlB9jmeGA\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-devastation-climate-tibet\/\">Amazon devastation is also altering Tibet&#8217;s climate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Amazon devastation is also altering Tibet&#8217;s climate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/amazon-devastation-climate-tibet\/embed\/#?secret=mgAN4bOgWS#?secret=mGlB9jmeGA\" data-secret=\"mGlB9jmeGA\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Weak regulation<\/h5>\n<p>Marfrig confirmed that Campan\u00e1rio was at the time an indirect supplier of his that was in compliance with supply standards. But doubts remain, if only in the face of the limitations of the<strong> regulatory system<\/strong> that contribute to the <strong>opacity of the industry<\/strong>. Unlike with producers of meat, soybeans, palm oil and other products, in fact, companies marketing collagen are not required to track their <strong>environmental impact<\/strong>, the Guardian says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This regulatory shortcoming complicates <strong>supply chain monitoring<\/strong> in an industry that offers significant profits to its operators.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also according to the British newspaper, which quotes U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates, animal by-products, including skin and collagen, make up <strong>almost half the weight<\/strong> of a slaughtered cow. And they can generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extension.iastate.edu\/agdm\/articles\/schulz\/SchDec21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 20 percent<\/a> of meat producers&#8217;
