The initiative aims to counter land degradation which is estimated to cost $67 bn a year in America<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Developing technologies to assess <strong>soil sustainability and health<\/strong>, tracking the impact of climate change on the soil itself and providing tools to ensure food security. These are the goals of <strong>SoilTech<\/strong>, the new Center for Soil Technologies launched by the National Science Foundation, a research agency of the U.S. government. Launched in February this year, SoilTech employs experts from <strong>four universities<\/strong>: Iowa State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Connecticut and the University of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The Center, a <a href=\"https:\/\/viterbischool.usc.edu\/news\/2023\/02\/new-nsf-center-on-soil-research-launched\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> says, &#8220;will be the first of its kind to develop in-situ and remote sensing and analysis tools that can share real-time soil dynamics data with the nation at-large.&#8221; The first part of the project has a <strong>five-year<\/strong> duration.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"34AstnxTa4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/us-climate-proposal-agricolture\/\">Three U.S. soil associations unveil seven proposals for climate-resilient agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Three U.S. soil associations unveil seven proposals for climate-resilient agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/us-climate-proposal-agricolture\/embed\/#?secret=kIQKwQI8Xf#?secret=34AstnxTa4\" data-secret=\"34AstnxTa4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Pesticides, nutrients and carbon at the center of investigation<\/h5>\n<p>Soil analyses, the project leaders explain, will be used primarily to highlight soil properties including water and <strong>organic matter<\/strong> content and the presence of contaminants. The Center will develop targeted projects aimed at understanding the effects of carbon sequestration and determining optimal irrigation patterns. At the same time, &#8220;Researchers will simultaneously develop visualization tools to share observations broadly with the agriculture, water management, and infrastructure management communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In detail, a <strong>Iowa State University<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.iastate.edu\/news\/2023\/02\/28\/soiltech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> explains, the 20 researchers involved will share tasks in developing <strong>different initiatives<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Researchers from the <strong>University of Southern California<\/strong>, for example, will work on sensors and data analysis. At the same time, their colleagues from the <strong>University of Connecticut<\/strong> and the <strong>University of Washington<\/strong> will engage in monitoring soil health, plant nutrients and toxic contaminants, respectively, on the one hand, and in analyzing satellite imagery for ground observation, local precision agriculture networks and ground-based sensors, on the other. There are crop stresses with climate change. If we want to feed the global population, we have to take care of soils.&#8221; The issue is of general concern, points out his colleague <strong>Carmen Gomes<\/strong>, professor of mechanical engineering at the same university. &#8220;Agriculture, defense, energy, the environment \u2013 all these industries understand the importance of soils,&#8221; she explains. &#8220;Soils are the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is not surprising, then, that the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have established a $13 million research program called &#8220;Signals in the Soil.&#8221; The goal is to improve understanding of land dynamics through <strong>innovation in sensory systems<\/strong> and improved prediction models.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"o8OSuyqOk8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-chemicals-meat-soil\/\">Chemicals in meat and soil raise concern in US, The Guardian writes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Chemicals in meat and soil raise concern in US, The Guardian writes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/usa-chemicals-meat-soil\/embed\/#?secret=6VBfGtkYMc#?secret=o8OSuyqOk8\" data-secret=\"o8OSuyqOk8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>U.S. soil erosion costs $67 billion a year<\/h5>\n<p>To date, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthworm.org\/news-stories\/soilhealth-usa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> <strong>Earthworm Foundation<\/strong>, an institution based in Nyon, Switzerland, land degradation remains a major problem in the United States. Currently, the foundation wrote, &#8220;soil erosion in the United States is estimated to cost <strong>$67 billion<\/strong> a year.&#8221; This amount &#8220;is not paid directly by farmers or businesses, but typically born by the public sector, consumers and future generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The figure refers to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/True-Cost-of-Food-Full-Report-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> published in 2021 by the <strong>Rockefeller Foundation<\/strong> and represents only a fraction of the extra costs associated with <strong>food production<\/strong> in the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Considering factors such as the health impacts of poor nutrition, <strong>pollution<\/strong> and environmental damage, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/urban-biodiversity-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loss of biodiversity<\/a>, economic and social injustice in the production chain and more, the study points out, the total value of negative externalities is estimated to be <strong>$2.1 trillion<\/strong>.
