Financial institutions perform worse than non-financial companies<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than a third of the firms that contribute the most to <strong>deforestation<\/strong> have yet to develop a plan to reduce their impact on the phenomenon, the latest report by the NGO <strong>Global Canopy<\/strong> has found. The study, which looked at the initiatives of the 350 companies and 150 financial institutions <a href=\"https:\/\/forest500.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most exposed<\/a> to the problem through their supply chains and investments, drew a troubling picture.<\/p>\n<p>None of those surveyed had eliminated their contribution to deforestation, &#8220;and 40% (201 companies and financial institutions) haven\u2019t set a single policy on deforestation,&#8221; the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcanopy.org\/insights\/videos-and-podcasts\/40-of-the-forest-500-have-yet-to-set-a-single-policy-on-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explain<\/a>. &#8220;Ending deforestation is essential to achieving urgent global goals on <strong>climate, nature and human rights<\/strong>\u201d. The latest edition of the study shows that 100 of the <strong>350 companies<\/strong> monitored have made a deforestation commitment for all raw materials purchased and processed along the supply chain. Another 141 (40 percent of the total) have disclosed a plan to tackle the problem but only for a portion of the highest-risk forest resources they are exposed to.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the same time, the research <a href=\"https:\/\/forest500.org\/sites\/default\/files\/forest_500-2023_annual_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a>, &#8220;<strong>38 companies<\/strong>, despite being included in the Forest 500 every year since 2014, still <strong>don\u2019t have a single deforestation commitment<\/strong> in place.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Commitment varies by industry. Nearly 3 out of 4 companies have taken initiatives not to contribute to deforestation in the <strong>palm oil<\/strong> sector; more than half have taken similar initiatives in the <strong>timber<\/strong> and <strong>paper<\/strong> sectors. At the same time, &#8220;Only 28% (20\/71) of companies assessed for leather have a deforestation commitment for leather and only 30% (29\/96) of companies assessed for beef have a deforestation commitment for <strong>beef<\/strong>.&#8221; Data are also disappointong for <strong>soybeans<\/strong>, &#8220;with less than half (43%) (83\/192) of companies with a deforestation commitment in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"pP1Ogm0kBl\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/covid-lockdown-deforestation\/\">Global lockdowns during Covid-19 outbreak did not curb deforestation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Global lockdowns during Covid-19 outbreak did not curb deforestation&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/covid-lockdown-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=ef6v5H8s7y#?secret=pP1Ogm0kBl\" data-secret=\"pP1Ogm0kBl\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Banks provide strong support to deforestation<\/h5>\n<p>The situation appears even more problematic for observed financial institutions which, to date, provide <strong>$6.1 trillion in financing<\/strong> to companies in forest-risk supply chains. Of the 150 companies observed, &#8220;Only 16 (11%) have policies for all four commodities that are assessed&#8221;. At the same time, &#8220;39% (58 financial institutions) have at least one deforestation policy for any of the forest-risk commodities they are exposed to in their portfolios.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Moreover, &#8220;92 (61%) of <strong>the financial institutions that are most exposed to deforestation<\/strong> do not have a deforestation policy covering their lending and investments&#8221;. In recent months, a <a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FF2022-policy-briefer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the NGO Forests &amp; Finance <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/banks-ngo-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has found<\/a> that since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, global major banks have provided <strong>$267 billion credit<\/strong> to just 300 commodity companies at risk of deforestation operating in the world&#8217;s three largest tropical regions.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Uyt77n5Fks\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/deforestazione-narcotraffico-peru\/\">Deforestazione e narcotraffico minacciano le comunit\u00e0 del Per\u00f9<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deforestazione e narcotraffico minacciano le comunit\u00e0 del Per\u00f9&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/deforestazione-narcotraffico-peru\/embed\/#?secret=1SS0LAmkIL#?secret=Uyt77n5Fks\" data-secret=\"Uyt77n5Fks\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The impact on human rights<\/h5>\n<p>The partial or total lack of commitment to addressing deforestation, Global Canopy researchers explain, &#8220;is often inextricably linked to <strong>human rights abuses<\/strong>.&#8221; Indeed, deforestation fueled by growing demand for raw materials &#8220;can result in conflicts between companies and dispossessed communities.&#8221; In this scenario, unfortunately, &#8220;action on the human rights abuses associated with deforestation is failing across the board.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The study, in particular, came up with <strong>new indicators<\/strong> such as the respect for the rights of communities historically established on the territory and the ability to counter threats and violence against environmental activists.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The analysis &#8220;found that companies were not keeping up with the best practice for companies in forest-risk supply chains, and the average company\u2019s score on associated human rights <strong>fell by 7 percentage points<\/strong> with the addition of new indicators.&#8221; Even companies engaged in protecting other fundamental rights are not taking adequate action against forest-related rights violations, the study concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to Global Canopy 201 of the 500 companies and financial firms most exposed to deforestation have taken no action to address the problem.
