And the problem affects many African countries<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trade of <strong>charcoal<\/strong>, which is made from burning logs and branches, fuels deforestation in <strong>Tanzania<\/strong>. A phenomenon which is also fostered by the push of black market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/dec\/13\/tanzania-charcoal-trade-deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Brtish newspaper The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s persistent poverty and the current international economic scenario, are still crucial factors behind the exploitation of forest resources. Forty-five percent of Tanzanians live on <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/country\/tanzania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">little more than $2 a day<\/a>, and <strong>90 percent routinely use charcoal and firewood<\/strong> for cooking. Rising gas prices on the international market also spur growth in demand resulting in tree cutting.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tanzania?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tanzania<\/a>: Booming <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/charcoal?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#charcoal<\/a> trade drives unchecked <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/deforestation?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#deforestation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; As rising gas prices drive demand for the polluting fuel, illegal loggers depend on the trade to live \u2013 even as the forest disappears around them<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bQlnMJlqSh\">https:\/\/t.co\/bQlnMJlqSh<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ne7VmFAAU9\">pic.twitter.com\/ne7VmFAAU9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Environmental Investigation Agency (@EIA_News) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EIA_News\/status\/1602679914972454912?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 13, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Charcoal and deforestation result in profits for the few<\/h5>\n<p>Fuel production is a particularly lucrative business for middlemen, who are the main beneficiaries of this trade. &#8220;Loggers can earn about 8,500 Tanzanian shillings (\u00a33) for a large bag of charcoal from <strong>brokers<\/strong>, who then sell it to wholesalers at a profit,&#8221; says The Guardian. &#8220;But it\u2019s the wholesalers who make the most money&#8221;. As they can sell the bag &#8220;for up to 82,000 shillings in Dar es Salaam: <strong>almost 10 times the price<\/strong> it was bought for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Also benefiting from this activity is the government, which has long obtained a significant revenue stream from forest exploitation. &#8220;In 2019, earnings from the forestry sector \u2013 which includes trade in charcoal, firewood, logs, poles, honey, seeds and seedlings \u2013 contributed about <strong>3% to GDP<\/strong>, with charcoal accounting for 44% of that figure\u201d, The Guardian says. \u201cAs such, the government gives out permits to loggers and has set targets on the number of bags each area of the country needs to produce each year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/embed\/widget\/netChange\/country\/TZA\" width=\"630\" height=\"460\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/h5>\n<h5>Illegal trade thrives<\/h5>\n<p>According to the FAO, the British newspaper recalls, Tanzania lost nearly <strong>470,000 hectares<\/strong> of forest per year between 2015 and 2020. The government had officially intervened in 2006 by banning charcoal production and trade. However, the operation failed: prices rose and the black market grew. Two weeks later <a href=\"https:\/\/theworld.org\/stories\/2015-10-22\/tanzania-trying-turn-charcoal-trade-enemy-friend-forest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ban was lifted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The expansion of the parallel market, resulting in <strong>lost revenue for the government<\/strong>, never stopped. Local authorities have been accused of conducting few checks on the actual number of plants cut, and widespread corruption contribute to the perpetuation of <strong>illegal operations<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tanzania&#8217;s situation finds relevant similarities with other African countries. Prominent is the case of <strong>Somalia<\/strong>, where poor access to electricity <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/somalia-deforestation-acacia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is offset<\/a> by the extensive use of charcoal. Added to this is the boost in demand from foreign countries: poor nations like Yemen or rich ones like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. And the trend is set to be confirmed in the future. According to the nongovernmental organization The Charcoal Project, in particular, <strong>the dependence of some African countries<\/strong> on this resource which is a major contributor to national tax revenues ends up virtually invalidating environmental protection policies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Countries can legislate charcoal out of existence but they\u2019re only creating more problems,&#8221; the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charcoalproject.org\/tanzanias-war-on-charcoal-harms-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a>. &#8220;The reality is that charcoal consumption <strong>is expected to increase<\/strong> over the coming decades.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Until the nations affected by this trade are wealthy enough to embark on an <strong>energy transition<\/strong>, the NGO continues, &#8220;Imposing severe restrictions on production and sales of charcoal only hurts producers and consumers, lines the pockets of black- and grey-market traders, and reduces legitimate income for local, regional, and national authorities.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deforestation is a result of the national and international economic scenarios, British newspaper The Guardian writes.
