The food future of humanity depends on their sustainable management<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Emanuele Isonio<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Promoting <strong>sustainable soil management,<\/strong> preserving its health and combating <strong>degradation factors<\/strong> is essential. Both environmentally and humanly. Especially in the case of soils that are fertile or particularly valuable due to their ability to <strong>sequester carbon<\/strong>. But how do you know the best techniques without an updated and complete map of the different terrains of a macro-region? First of all because <strong>60% of the entire world population<\/strong> lives on the continent. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for 2.2 billion people in the region. But from there come raw materials and food resources that are also precious for the West. In addition, already today a large number of inhabitants in Asia have <strong>food supply problems:<\/strong> 376 million suffer from hunger, over 1.1 billion have not had access to healthy food, 1.8 billion still cannot access to balanced diets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rapid population growth<\/strong> (estimates predict that the continent will reach 5.3 billion inhabitants by mid-century) is putting <strong>increasing pressure<\/strong> on soil resources, with unprecedented rates of urbanization and growing demand for ecosystem services. Simply put: if sustainable land management practices are not implemented and land degradation continues at this rate, hunger will still increase in the foreseeable future. It was created to raise awareness of the crucial role of soil health among a wide range of stakeholders, support the development and implementation of virtuous policies and tools in agriculture, environmental issues, climate change, aid and development assistance, urban planning and more&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>preparation<\/strong> of the atlas <strong>started in 2018<\/strong> and involved around 100 soil experts from 45 countries. Financial support was provided by the JRC and the Asian Agricultural and Food Cooperation Initiative (AFACI), managed by the Rural Development Administration of the Republic of Korea.<\/p>\n<h5>Soils (and their various problems) on display<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cAt its core, the atlas presents a <strong>series of annotated maps<\/strong> showing the diversity of soil features across Asia in a way that is understandable to a general audience. It seeks to explain in a clear and simple way <strong>how soils are formed<\/strong>, the key factors that shape soil <strong>characteristics<\/strong> and why they vary,\u201d the authors point out.<\/p>\n<p>Another relevant aspect of the publication is the ability to graphically show the growing pressure on soils deriving from man-induced problems such as <strong>urban sprawl,<\/strong> inappropriate land management, <strong>pollution<\/strong>, increased demand for food and climate change .<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is important &#8211; the authors continue &#8211; that people understand how their actions can lead to the degradation of this fundamental natural resource and what they can do to help protect and restore soils by reducing degradation processes&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ZpDdmMcOer\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/sustainable-soil-carbon-offesetting\/\">Well managed soil can offset as much as 34% of agricultural emissions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Well managed soil can offset as much as 34% of agricultural emissions&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/environment\/sustainable-soil-carbon-offesetting\/embed\/#?secret=e0YS9irDy7#?secret=ZpDdmMcOer\" data-secret=\"ZpDdmMcOer\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>From frozen grounds to the ring of fire<\/h5>\n<p>The <strong>enormous differences<\/strong> between Asian soils are obviously represented in the document. Result of a wide combination of climatic conditions and parental materials. They range from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Cryosol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cryosols<\/a> of the northernmost regions to the extensive peat bogs typical of South-East Asia. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluvisol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fluvisols<\/a>, considered the birthplaces of agriculture, are also found along major waterways in West, South and East Asia. While volcanic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andosols<\/a> circumscribe the Pacific ring of fire.<\/p>\n<p>Like other macro-regions of the planet, unsustainable land use and management are leading to increased soil degradation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\">loss of nutrients and organic matter,<\/a> as well as soil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\">contamination<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\">erosion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\">salinization<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\">compaction<\/a>. All of this affects the amount of carbon stored in the soil in the form of organic matter, which is essential for its health, fertility and ecosystem services. Frutto di un&#8217;ampia combinazione di condizioni climatiche e materiali parentali. Si va dai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Cryosol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cryosol<\/strong><\/a> delle regioni pi\u00f9 settentrionali alle estese torbiere tipiche del sud-est asiatico. I <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluvisol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>fluvisol<\/strong><\/a>, considerati luoghi di nascita dell&#8217;agricoltura, si trovano poi lungo i principali corsi d&#8217;acqua dell&#8217;Asia occidentale, meridionale e orientale. Mentre gli <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/andosol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Andosol<\/strong><\/a> vulcanici circoscrivono l&#8217;anello di fuoco del Pacifico.<\/p>\n<p>Al pari di altre macroregioni del Pianeta, l&#8217;uso e la gestione non sostenibile del territorio stanno portando a un aumento del degrado del suolo, a una <strong>perdita di nutrienti<\/strong> e di materia organica, oltre alla sua <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/fao-soil-pollution-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>contaminazione<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/china-black-soil-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>erosione<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/salinizzazione-suoli-rischi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>salinizzazione<\/strong><\/a> e <strong>compattazione<\/strong>. Tutto ci\u00f2 si riverbera sulla quantit\u00e0 di carbonio immagazzinato nel suolo sotto forma di materia organica, fondamentale per la sua salute, la fertilit\u00e0 e i servizi ecosistemici. At the basis of Beijing&#8217;s choice there are agricultural reasons (black soils exploited irresponsibly yield less, endangering Chinese food security and beyond).
