A phenomenon fueled by guerrillas in neighboring Colombia with the acquiescence of president Maduro&#8217;s government according to NGOs<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deforestation in <strong>Venezuela<\/strong> is growing at an impressive rate under the pressure of indiscriminate mining, New Scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2350663-deforestation-in-venezuela-surges-as-gold-miners-ransack-the-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in recent days. The magazine said the loss of pristine forests is increasing at a rate of <strong>170 percent per year<\/strong>. A phenomenon fueled in particular by the gold rush and government support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one is seeing this destruction because it\u2019s happening so fast that it\u2019s impossible to measure,&#8221; <strong>Alejandro \u00c1lvarez Iragorry<\/strong>, coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/clima21.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clima21<\/a>, a Venezuelan environmental and human rights organization, told the magazine. &#8220;The environmental damage and the speed with which it\u2019s happening is disastrous.&#8221; And this is not an isolated warning.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Eo6wkCpPho\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-drug-trafficking-peru\/\">Deforestation and drug trafficking threaten Peru&#8217;s communities<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deforestation and drug trafficking threaten Peru&#8217;s communities&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-drug-trafficking-peru\/embed\/#?secret=5NPaWQcEUv#?secret=Eo6wkCpPho\" data-secret=\"Eo6wkCpPho\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Serious consequences for the environment and people in the Orinoco area<\/h5>\n<p>Fueling deforestation in Venezuela is mainly the exploitation of the Orinoco mining area in the south of the country. Five years ago, the Spanish newspaper El Pa\u00eds <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/america-futura\/2022-12-31\/deforestacion-mineria-y-otros-retos-ambientales-de-america-latina-en-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> last December, the government of President <strong>Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong> authorized the exploitation of this area, which covers <strong>about 12 percent of the national territory<\/strong>. The management of mining activities was reportedly &#8220;totally opaque&#8221; with serious consequences for the environment and its inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the newspaper continues, &#8220;United Nations reports sounded the alarm about uncontrolled mining in the southern Orinoco, which has gone beyond environmental damage and has become a <strong>serious human rights crisis<\/strong>, with reports of labor and sexual exploitation, slavery, and the presence of criminal gangs and even the Colombian guerrilla group <strong>ELN<\/strong>, involved in the exploitation of gold, coltan, diamonds and bauxite in this vast region with the consent of Venezuelan authorities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">La miner\u00eda est\u00e1 generando una gran deforestaci\u00f3n en la parte sur de Venezuela, afectando las cuencas de los r\u00edos Paragua y Caron\u00ed que son los principales afluentes de agua que alimentan al Gur\u00ed en donde se produce 70% de la electricidad <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/D%C3%ADaMundialContraLaMiner%C3%ADaACieloAbierto?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#D\u00edaMundialContraLaMiner\u00edaACieloAbierto<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; FundaREDES (@FundaREDES_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FundaREDES_\/status\/1418323891651547136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 22, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>NGOs accuse the government<\/h5>\n<p>Government complicity in the development of the phenomenon has been denounced by local NGO Fundaredes, among others. In a recent report, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/08\/venezuelan-amazon-deforestation-expands-due-to-lawlessness-mining-fires-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> by the U.S.-based organization Mongabay, the authors pointed to the growth of <strong>deforestation<\/strong> paired with an increase in the illegal activities of <strong>Colombian guerrillas<\/strong>. The government&#8217;s acquiescence, Fundaredes denounces, would stem from the need to compensate for the collapse of revenue from the domestic oil industry, which has long been in crisis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/96b64621-3588-4901-84f5-938712b1c879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">due to U.S. sanctions<\/a> suffered in recent years and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iai.it\/en\/pubblicazioni\/venezuelan-oil-industry-collapse-economic-social-and-political-implications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mismanagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The so-called Orinoco Mining Arc has been subjected to large-scale and unsupervised mining processes of various minerals <strong>exploited<\/strong>,&#8221; the report <a href=\"https:\/\/fundaredes.org\/informes\/2022-ambiente-Arco-Minero-del-Orinoco-y-la-destruccion-de-la-reserva-natural.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>. This is &#8220;a strategic action by the state to try to cover the <strong>revenue deficit<\/strong> resulting from the oil crisis, the dismantling of basic industries and misguided economic policies.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fundaredes also denounced the construction of illegal runways, used to take off and land planes involved in <strong>drug trafficking<\/strong> and mineral smuggling operations. A phenomenon which also affects <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/narcos-honduras-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other countries<\/a> in <strong>Latin America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/embed\/widget\/treeLoss\/country\/VEN\" width=\"630\" height=\"460\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/h5>\n<h5>The pace of deforestation in Venezuela has doubled in 5 years<\/h5>\n<p>According to Global Forest Watch, a project of the Washington-based nonprofit organization World Resources Institute, from 2001 to 2021 Venezuela <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/dashboards\/country\/VEN\/?category=summary&amp;location=WyJjb3VudHJ5IiwiVkVOIl0%3D&amp;map=eyJjZW50ZXIiOnsibGF0Ijo2LjQ1NTEwOTg0NTY0NzE4LCJsbmciOi02Ni41OTc0MzMwODk5NzM4NX0sInpvb20iOjQuMTkyMTc2MDQ2NzI0MDQxLCJjYW5Cb3VuZCI6ZmFsc2UsImRhdGFzZXRzIjpbeyJkYXRhc2V0IjoicG9saXRpY2FsLWJvdW5kYXJpZXMiLCJsYXllcnMiOlsiZGlzcHV0ZWQtcG9saXRpY2FsLWJvdW5kYXJpZXMiLCJwb2xpdGljYWwtYm91bmRhcmllcyJdLCJib3VuZGFyeSI6dHJ1ZSwib3BhY2l0eSI6MSwidmlzaWJpbGl0eSI6dHJ1ZX0seyJkYXRhc2V0IjoiTmV0LUNoYW5nZS1TVEFHSU5HIiwibGF5ZXJzIjpbImZvcmVzdC1uZXQtY2hhbmdlIl0sIm9wYWNpdHkiOjEsInZpc2liaWxpdHkiOnRydWUsInBhcmFtcyI6eyJ2aXNpYmlsaXR5Ijp0cnVlLCJhZG1fbGV2ZWwiOiJhZG0wIn19XX0%3D&amp;showMap=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost<\/a> <strong>2.29 million hectares<\/strong> of tree cover, or 4.1 percent of the total. This decline produced about 1 billion tons of additional CO2 emissions. Over the same period, more than 550 thousand hectares of primary rainforest disappeared, a 1.4 percent decline from the beginning of the century.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to estimates by <strong>Sociedad Venezolana de Ecolog\u00eda<\/strong>, quoted by Mongabay, since 2016, when Maduro ruled the start of mining operations in the Orinoco and <strong>the Colombian government and guerrillas<\/strong> signed their peace agreement, the average rate of deforestation has doubled.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;These two political events,&#8221; Mongabay writes, &#8220;aalso appear to have drastically changed the distribution of deforestation: shifting it from Venezuela\u2019s northern urban areas and the plains bioregion, far to the south beyond the Orinoco River.&#8221; Between 2000 and 2015, the average annual loss was 43,267 hectares.
