The banks, in detail, allegedly invested about <strong>743 million euros<\/strong> in agribusiness companies responsible for deforestation activities between 2013 and 2022 says a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23319006-infamous-connections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> published on Disclose and Reporter Brasil and carried out by the NGOs Sherpa, Harvest, and Centre for Climate Crime Analysis.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation points the finger at <strong>BNP Paribas, Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, Cr\u00e9dit Agricole<\/strong>, and the <strong>Banque Populaire et Caisse d&#8217;Epargne<\/strong> (BPCE) group whose operations allegedly financed the companies responsible for cutting down trees to make way for livestock farming and soybean and palm oil crops.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"u2wBhhssOn\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-deforestation-for-nothing\/\">Land speculation drives deforestation &#8216;for nothing&#8217; in the tropics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Land speculation drives deforestation &#8216;for nothing&#8217; in the tropics&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agriculture-deforestation-for-nothing\/embed\/#?secret=u6Sc13lGYu#?secret=u2wBhhssOn\" data-secret=\"u2wBhhssOn\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The allegations against BNP<\/h5>\n<p>At the top of the investment ranking, the NGOs <a href=\"https:\/\/disclose.ngo\/fr\/article\/les-banques-francaises-financent-massivement-la-deforestation-de-lamazonie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claim<\/a>, is <strong>BNP Paribas<\/strong>, which allegedly invested 456 million euros in a decade in the <strong>soybean, beef, and palm oil<\/strong> sectors. An amount that places the French institution at the top of the national ranking of the largest contributors to the phenomenon and fourth in Europe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the major companies benefiting from BNP&#8217;s financial support are food giants <strong>Bunge, Minerva, Marfrig, and JBS<\/strong>, the world&#8217;s largest beef producer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2021, the French bank had announced that it would stop financing companies that produce or purchase beef or soybeans from land deforested or converted after 2008 in the Amazon. This year, however, BNP bought <strong>more than 4.6 million euros of JBS shares<\/strong> together with the BPCE group and Cr\u00e9dit Agricole. &#8220;When questioned about its failure to meet its commitments,&#8221; Disclose writes.&#8221;The bank justified itself by explaining that it would only provide its financial services to companies with a zero deforestation strategy in their production and supply chains by 2025 at the latest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ITJ2krb8RH\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-congo-basin\/\">Deforestation in the Congo Basin is growing at an alarming rate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Deforestation in the Congo Basin is growing at an alarming rate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-congo-basin\/embed\/#?secret=dyRA9gePn8#?secret=ITJ2krb8RH\" data-secret=\"ITJ2krb8RH\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Soybean financing targeted<\/h5>\n<p>The most heavily financed sector by the four banks is <strong>soybean<\/strong>, with about <strong>564 million euros<\/strong> in total support over the decade under review. &#8220;To meet the exponential demand for this product from European and Chinese farmers, multinationals are clearing vast areas of Brazil&#8217;s thousand-year-old forests,&#8221; Disclose further writes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The phenomenon &#8220;is particularly evident in the Cerrado region, home to <strong>5 percent of the world&#8217;s biodiversity<\/strong> and where cereal production has destroyed nearly half of the forest.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chinese company <strong>Cofco<\/strong> and the U.S.-based <strong>Bunge<\/strong> and <strong>Cargill<\/strong> receivedt he largest share of the total funding. &#8220;Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, which pledged last March to implement new restrictions to preserve forest ecosystems, has supported the Cargill group for <strong>more than 14 million euros<\/strong> between 2019 and 2022,&#8221; the NGOs write. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FF2022-policy-briefer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by Forests &amp; Finance, a coalition made up of several nongovernmental organizations, revealed how &#8220;banks <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/banks-ngo-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have provided<\/a> <strong>USD 267 billion<\/strong> in credit (2016-2022 September) to just 300 forest-risk commodity companies operating in the world\u2019s three largest tropical forest regions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Between 2020 and 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/worlds-top-finance-firms-continue-fuel-deforestation-report-warns-2022-10-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Reuters<\/a> quoting the report, &#8220;finance to those companies <strong>rose over 60% to $47 billion<\/strong> between 2020 and 2021.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Regulation loopholes are also a problem. On December 6th, the European Parliament and the EU Council reached an <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreement<\/a> <strong>to ban imports<\/strong> of deforestation-related products in <strong>Europe<\/strong>. The rule covers particularly critical raw materials such as cocoa and rubber but only involves companies for now. &#8220;However,&#8221; specialised news website Euractiv <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/banks-escape-eu-due-diligence-obligation-on-deforestation-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>, &#8220;banks
