Between 2013 and 2021, the territory lost 15 percent of its tree cover<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Drug trafficking fuels deforestation in the land of the native Kakataibo community in central <strong>Peru<\/strong>. A phenomenon that is also experiencing an acceleration due to the government&#8217;s failure to intervene <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/12\/indigenous-communities-in-peru-living-in-fear-due-to-deforestation-drug-trafficking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> American NGO <strong>Mongabay<\/strong>. The area under investigation covers <strong>680 square kilometers<\/strong> between the Hu\u00e1nuco and Ucayali regions in the center of the country. &#8220;Satellite data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Forest Watch<\/a> (a monitoring initiative promoted by the U.S. nonprofit organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Resources Institute<\/a>, ed.) show the territory was relatively unscathed until 2013 when deforestation surged,&#8221; the organization writes. &#8220;By 2021 the territory had lost nearly 15% of its tree cover.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8LIOaT97Ks\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/banche-ong-deforestazione\/\">Banks&#8217; support for deforestation grew since Paris Agreement<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Banks&#8217; support for deforestation grew since Paris Agreement&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/banche-ong-deforestazione\/embed\/#?secret=bjbp449aVi#?secret=8LIOaT97Ks\" data-secret=\"8LIOaT97Ks\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The Kakataibos&#8217; claim<\/h5>\n<p>Epicenter of the problem is the Puerto Nuevo area, one of the &#8220;10 most deforested community territories in all of Peru between 2000 and 2015, according to a study conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/ibcperu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instituto del Bien Com\u00fan<\/a>.&#8221; The <strong>Kakataibo<\/strong> community has reported other deforestation operations suffered in its territories in the Santa Marta and Unipacuyacu areas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>Drug trafficking<\/strong> is advancing more every day,&#8221; said <strong>Herlin Odicio<\/strong>, president of Fenacoka, the Native Federation of Kakataibo Communities quoted by Mongabay. In the occupied territories &#8220;The plants that are there are coca; they are not other crops.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem, some say, is that coping with these attacks is becoming increasingly difficult. As much because of the dangerousness of those involved as because of the <strong>lack of initiative<\/strong> by the authorities. &#8220;More than four, six, eight years ago, they were invading, in succession, and the government does not guarantee any support for us,&#8221; Puerto Nuevo community president <strong>El\u00edas Mosoline<\/strong> explained to the U.S.-based NGO. &#8220;We want this to end so that [we can] live in tranquility and in harmony. We live in fear and we cannot go to our farms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3E4cNKrhrl\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/brasile-corte-suprema-amazzonia\/\">Brazil Supreme Court restarts the Amazon rainforest Fund<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brazil Supreme Court restarts the Amazon rainforest Fund&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/brasile-corte-suprema-amazzonia\/embed\/#?secret=BYJKpbC5IL#?secret=3E4cNKrhrl\" data-secret=\"3E4cNKrhrl\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Political instability fosters abuse of power<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Vladimir Rojas<\/strong>, an expert working with the Specialized Environmental Prosecution Office in Ucayali, denounced the lack of efforts by authorities. In 2019, writes Mongabay, Rojas had coordinated with the prosecutor&#8217;s office and the Peruvian police&#8217;s anti-drug division to conduct an operation in Puerto Nuevo. The operation, however, never materialized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jorge Mendoza<\/strong>, director of the Office of the Ombudsman in Tingo Mar\u00eda, explained to NGO that <strong>political instability<\/strong> poses an additional problem for protecting the rights of <strong>indigenous communities<\/strong> in the area. In March of this year, for example, the magazine Di\u00e1logo Americas <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogo-americas.com\/articles\/narcotrafficking-a-cause-of-deforestation-in-honduras\/#.Y6BmrnbMK03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the spread of arson in <strong>Honduras<\/strong> where in 2021 flames would have destroyed more than 90 thousand hectares of forest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Part of this destruction, it is alleged, was the work of the traffickers themselves, who were interested in cutting down plants to build clandestine airstrips and <strong>laboratories for drug<\/strong> preparation. But also to open new areas for livestock, a practice used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-forests-drugtrafficking-centralameric-idUSKBN1JG07S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money laundering<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to data released by the Spanish news agency EFE and Mongabay, both quoted by Di\u00e1logo Americas, last year Honduran authorities eradicated <strong>525,000 coca plants<\/strong> by destroying eight drug laboratories. Between 2020 and 2021, narcos <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/narcos-honduras-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly destroyed<\/a> 140 hectares of forest to make way for illegal crops.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/embed\/widget\/treeLoss\/country\/PER\" width=\"630\" height=\"460\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>2,000 square kilometers of Peruvian Amazon destroyed in 2020<\/h5>\n<p>It is currently hard to estimate the contribution of drug trafficking to the overall deforestation that characterizes Peru. What is certain is that the South American nation has long faced a phenomenon characterized by alarming numbers. Global Forest Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/dashboards\/country\/PER\/?category=summary&amp;firesAlertsHistorical=eyJzdGFydEluZGV4Ijo1MTAsImVuZEluZGV4Ijo1NzEsInN0YXJ0RGF0ZUFic29sdXRlIjoiMjAyMS0xMC0xMSIsImVuZERhdGVBYnNvbHV0ZSI6IjIwMjItMTItMTIifQ%3D%3D&amp;location=WyJjb3VudHJ5IiwiUEVSIl0%3D&amp;map=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&amp;showMap=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> that from 2000 to 2020, the country&#8217;s total tree cover <strong>has shrunk by 762 thousand hectares<\/strong> (-1 percent). Growth and restoration operations, in other words, have not fully compensated for the total loss of plants (minus <strong>3.6 million hectares<\/strong> of cover), which particularly affected primary forest (minus 2.3 million hectares).<\/p>\n<p>In the 21st century, Global Forest Watch continues, the destruction of forested areas produced <strong>2.32 billion tons of additional CO2 emissions<\/strong>. Finally, deforestation has been increasing in recent years. In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/sep\/11\/mennonites-peru-deforestation-permits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> British newspaper The Guardian quoting data from the Ministry of Environment in Lima, deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon affected 2,032 square kilometers of land, compared to 548 sqkm in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deforestation has affected an area of 680 square kilometers between the Hu\u00e1nuco and Ucayali regions in the center of the country.
