A project aims to define the potential of agroforestry and open the way to a new market<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Assess the potential for <strong>carbon sequestration<\/strong> in UK forests to better support climate mitigation strategies by engaging operators, managers and funders. That is the goal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soilassociation.org\/farmers-growers\/farming-news\/2022\/august\/15\/exploring-opportunities-for-an-agroforestry-carbon-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woodland Carbon Code<\/a> project, sponsored by the <strong>Soil Association<\/strong>, an Edinburgh-based environmental body, along with other organizations such as the Woodland Trust, Finance Earth, Organic Research Centre and the Scottish Rural College (SRUC).<\/p>\n<p>The program, which was discussed at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EPwUy3_3yK0&amp;list=PLiWAozVmDLEmcHbRFqQnAN31C2TagQT9U&amp;index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webinar<\/a> in recent weeks, &#8220;is investigating the carbon sequestered by in-field agroforestry systems and the feasibility aand opportunity to generate robust carbon credits,&#8221; <strong>Clive Thomas<\/strong>, Senior Policy Advisor to the Soil Association, explained. These &#8220;might be used for either insetting, as a contribution to a landowner\/supply chian net zero strategy or for sale to 3rd parties, as credits for offsetting of unavoidable emissions within a robust emissions reduction strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLiWAozVmDLEmcHbRFqQnAN31C2TagQT9U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>The benefits of agroforestry<\/h5>\n<p>Agroforestry involves the establishment of an agricultural system that combines traditional activities such as crops and livestock with the planting and management of trees. This practice, says a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/media\/51622\/farming-for-the-future-how-agroforestry-can-deliver-for-nature-climate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by <strong>Woodland Trust<\/strong>, an organization promoting the restoration of British forests, results in several benefits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBringing more trees into farmed landscapes will make them more resilient economically and environmentally,\u201d says the research. \u201cTrees on farms combine productivity with support for biodiversity, increasing the <strong>carbon stored in the land<\/strong> and helping us meet our commitments on climate and nature.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On average, cultivated land in the UK releases <strong>nearly 2 tons of CO2<\/strong> per hectare each year; land used for livestock almost four tons. In contrast, the report notes, &#8220;Over 30 years, silvoarable systems can sequester the equivalent of <strong>eight tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year<\/strong>.&#8221; Moreover, \u201cEstablishing silvopastoral agroforestry on 30% of UK grassland would result in net zero emissions from the grassland sector by 2050, and a net sequestration rate of 21 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year by 2062.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"PtWP3gqdS9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/government-incentives-farms-uk\/\">Government incentives and carbon market may revive marginal farms in UK<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Government incentives and carbon market may revive marginal farms in UK&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/government-incentives-farms-uk\/embed\/#?secret=LD5W7zmDgk#?secret=PtWP3gqdS9\" data-secret=\"PtWP3gqdS9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>One year of studies on forests<\/h5>\n<p>In addition to identify current opportunities for carbon measurement, the 12-month project aims to test agroforestry activities at <strong>a number of pilot sites<\/strong> in England. Researchers will need to figure out how to define requirements for measurements of the amount of element sequestered until an <strong>Agroforestry Carbon Code<\/strong> is produced.<\/p>\n<p>Then key aspects will need to be defined including the type of credits that can be produced, who is required to monitor and certify operations, potential revenues, and potential <strong>investors<\/strong>. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/eu-council-carbon-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon farming<\/a> strategy, in fact, agroforestry activities generate <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/government-incentives-farms-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emission credits<\/a> that can be traded in the market thus attracting the interest of financial players.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gpXI3UWD9n\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-council-carbon-farming\/\">Carbon farming regulation getting closer in EU as Council adopts conclusions<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Carbon farming regulation getting closer in EU as Council adopts conclusions&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/eu-council-carbon-farming\/embed\/#?secret=hKwmh42reE#?secret=gpXI3UWD9n\" data-secret=\"gpXI3UWD9n\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The role of private investors<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Public investment is not enough to fund UK&#8217;s nature recovery,&#8221; explained in fact <strong>Sarah Darrah<\/strong>, natural capital advisor at London-based consultancy Finance Earth. &#8220;Additional private investment of <strong>\u00a344- \u00a3l97 billion<\/strong> is needed over the next 10 years to deliver the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/25-year-environment-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25 Year Evironment Plan<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Morever, she says, in order to open the way for the market, we will need <strong>to answer three questions. <\/strong>&#8220;What role can private finance play in UK agroforestry projects if we could sell Agroforestry Carbon Credits based on the latest available science? Is there a <strong>market<\/strong> for Agroforestry Carbon Credits? What carbon <strong>price<\/strong> is needed to make a project viable based on carbon sequestration rates and project delivery cost?&#8221;. This will also make it possible to quantify the <strong>risk<\/strong> of operations by defining the price to attract investors.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"G7bBqfP9ca\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/torba-proposta-divieto-giardini\/\">The UK proposal: &#8220;No more peat for gardening&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;The UK proposal: &#8220;No more peat for gardening&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/torba-proposta-divieto-giardini\/embed\/#?secret=CL6oSY0Ydk#?secret=G7bBqfP9ca\" data-secret=\"G7bBqfP9ca\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A promising scenario<\/h5>\n<p>Not surprisingly, says <strong>Ilona Coulson-Ashworth<\/strong>, Carbon Projects Manager at Woodland Trust, the pilot initiatives aim to &#8220;test the code on a range of scale and system approaches to understand its effectiveness, the accessibility for farmers and the investment potential for buyers.&#8221; The scenario for the UK agroforestry sector, in any case, looks promising.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soilassociation.org\/media\/24150\/trees-and-woodland-in-the-farmed-landscape-online.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> by Cumulus Consulting, &#8220;more than 80% of the proposed Environment Plan target of <strong>420,000 hectares of new woodland\/new woodland canopy<\/strong> by 2050, could be achieved, without significant disruption to farm tenure.&#8221; In any case, &#8220;financial support will be vital to achieve this level of uptake (circa. \u00a390 million\/annum through to 2050).&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British forests can contribute significantly to climate mitigation.
