This is a particularly worrying trend, explains the Dutch NGO Climate Focus, when considering the area&#8217;s importance for climate mitigation and biodiversity<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During 2021, the<strong> Congo Basin<\/strong> area experienced an increasing deforestation, growing by almost 5 percent in a 12-month period. This is a worrying figure because of its implications in terms of biodiversity loss and reduced climate mitigation capacity, says a <a href=\"https:\/\/climatefocus.com\/publications\/regional-assessment-2022-tracking-progress-towards-forest-goals-in-the-congo-basin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the Dutch NGO <strong>Climate Focus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Congo Basin region has had historically low deforestation rates compared to other <strong>tropical forest regions<\/strong>. However, in 2021 forest loss in the Congo Basin jumped up compared to preceding years\u201d, says the study. \u201cForest degradation and fragmentation pose further risks to the world&#8217;s largest remaining intact forest landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7n7fIfANE4\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/smoked-fish-deforestation-congo\/\">Smoked fish is driving deforestation up in Congo-Brazzaville<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Smoked fish is driving deforestation up in Congo-Brazzaville&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/smoked-fish-deforestation-congo\/embed\/#?secret=SplDvGfau3#?secret=7n7fIfANE4\" data-secret=\"7n7fIfANE4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>636 thousand hectares lost in one year<\/h5>\n<p>The numbers, after all, are clear. &#8220;While deforestation rates in the Congo Basin showed a downward trend from 2015-20, the Basin still saw <strong>2.2 million hectares of forest loss<\/strong> and 1.5 million hectares of forest degradation in that period\u201d, the research says. \u201cDeforestation in the Congo Basin increased in 2021 by 30,000 hectares (or <strong>4.9 percent<\/strong>) compared to the 2018-2020 period, reaching a total of 636,000 hectares.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The trend, Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-10\/deforestation-surges-in-world-s-no-2-tropical-forest-congo-basin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, has been particularly evident in <strong>four nations<\/strong>: Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Central African Republic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Central African Republic, in particular, experienced a <strong>71 percent increase<\/strong> in deforestation, the worst result among the countries observed. Only two of the six countries under survey made <strong>exception<\/strong>: Gabon &#8211; which is engaged in a forest protection <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/gabon-soldi-per-difendere-foresta-ridurre-emissioni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">program<\/a> &#8211; and the <strong>Republic of Congo<\/strong> (Congo Brazzaville), which experienced a decrease in tree cover loss.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"k3kSdJBpOg\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/smart-agriculture-congo\/\">Climate smart practices can fix Congo&#8217;s agricultural crisis<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Climate smart practices can fix Congo&#8217;s agricultural crisis&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/smart-agriculture-congo\/embed\/#?secret=e3x1VWfrvV#?secret=k3kSdJBpOg\" data-secret=\"k3kSdJBpOg\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Congo Basin&#8217;s singularity<\/h5>\n<p>The observed area is extraordinary important. The region, in fact, is home to some of the largest tropical peatlands on the Planet and shows enormous biodiversity by hosting one-fifth of the world&#8217;s animal and plant species.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Over the 2001-2019 period,&#8221; the report explains, &#8220;fthe Congo Basin\u2019s forests presented <strong>the largest net carbon sink<\/strong> in the tropics, removing <strong>0.61 net gigatons<\/strong> of carbon dioxide equivalents (GtCO2e) per year.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At Cop26 in Glasgow in 2021, 140 countries including the six in the region signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/glasgow-leaders-declaration-on-forests-and-land-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declaration<\/a> pledging to halt global deforestation to reverse its rising trend by <strong>2030<\/strong>. &#8220;To achieve the global goal of ending deforestation by 2030, a reduction in forest cover loss of 10% per year between 2020 and 2030 is needed in all countries\u201d, the authors say. \u201cBased on 2021 trends, only Gabon and Republic of the Congo are currently aligned with this trajectory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"k2VwVWwIVA\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-congo-climate-change\/\">Congo&#8217;s peatlands are a barrier against climate change<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Congo&#8217;s peatlands are a barrier against climate change&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-congo-climate-change\/embed\/#?secret=ar74afgayA#?secret=k2VwVWwIVA\" data-secret=\"k2VwVWwIVA\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Commodity exploitation remains a threat<\/h5>\n<p>One year after the document was signed, the world has lost 6.8 million hectares of forests. Resulting in additional emissions of nearly four billion tons of greenhouse gases. Against this backdrop, the Congo Basin has long been an epicenter of the problem. From 2000 to 2016, the research further notes, &#8220;the share of intact forests in the region <strong>decreased from 78 percent to 67 percent<\/strong>, representing a degraded area of about 23 million hectares.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This process of deterioration is often the prelude to deforestation, a phenomenon that is encouraged by the increase in rcommodity exploitation activities such as <strong>logging<\/strong>, mining exploration and <strong>palm oil<\/strong> production.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In July this year, the Democratic Republic of Congo launched a tender for 30 oil and gas extraction permits. Many of these, Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-03\/congo-peatlands-which-slow-climate-change-bigger-than-thought\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>, involve peatlands, environments characterized by a pronounced <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/peatlands-congo-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">propensity for carbon sequestration<\/a>. President <strong>Felix Tshisekedi<\/strong> said on the occasion that the country will strive to minimize its environmental impact.
