Amazon and Southeast Asia are the epicenters of this phenomenon<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite international agreements and rising alarms on climate crisis and biodiversity loss <strong>financial support<\/strong> to deforestation keeps growing according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FF2022-policy-briefer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> released in recent weeks by <strong>Forests &amp; Finance<\/strong>, a coalition of various nongovernmental organizations. The survey, which tracked financial flows to major commodity companies operating in tropical regions, includes credits, bonds and equity holdings as of September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The research follows a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/portfolio.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Bankrolling-Extinction-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> reeased two years ago by the organization Portfolio.earth <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/news\/finanza-danni-biodiversita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showing<\/a> how the world largest banks lent <strong>more than $2.6 trillion<\/strong> to projects linked directly or indirectly to the destruction of ecosystems and wildlife in 2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our assessment shows that the policies of banks and investors are dangerously inadequate.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RxKTkPDmzR\">https:\/\/t.co\/RxKTkPDmzR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Forests &amp; Finance (@Forests_Finance) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Forests_Finance\/status\/1585614893549555713?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 27, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Banking institutions provided at least $267 billion to deforestation<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;Since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, Forests &amp; Finance revealed that banks have provided <strong>USD 267 billion in credit<\/strong> (2016-2022 September) to just 300 forest-risk commodity companies operating in the world\u2019s three largest tropical forest regions,&#8221; the study says. Moreover, &#8220;Despite the Agriculture, Forestry and Land-Use sector <strong>contributing 23% of global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong>, the financial sector is pouring money in at an alarming rate. Investors are also facilitating the expansion of agribusiness with <strong>USD 40 billion in bondholdings and shareholdings<\/strong> in September 2022.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The phenomenon slowed during the Covid-19 outbreak, but since last year the trend has picked up again. &#8220;World&#8217;s largest financial institutions increased their backing of companies in the agriculture, forestry and land use sectors most responsible for <strong>deforestation<\/strong> in 2021,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/worlds-top-finance-firms-continue-fuel-deforestation-report-warns-2022-10-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> Reuters. \u201cThe report found that finance to those companies rose <strong>over 60% to $47 billion<\/strong> between 2020 and 2021.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"q6aguponLc\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-risk-financial-crisis\/\">Financial damage from deforestation may be worse than 2008 downturn<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Financial damage from deforestation may be worse than 2008 downturn&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/deforestation-risk-financial-crisis\/embed\/#?secret=Gq8RcFbBBP#?secret=q6aguponLc\" data-secret=\"q6aguponLc\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Paper sector and livestock industry in the crosshairs<\/h5>\n<p>The survey highlighted the role of finance in supporting two sectors particularly dangerous to forests. These are pulp and paper sector in <strong>Southeast Asia<\/strong> and beef industry in the <strong>Amazon <\/strong>region. P<strong>ulp sector<\/strong> in Asia, the study claims, have contributed to a total deforestation of more than 170,000 hectares between 2015 and 2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since the Paris Agreement, the sector has attracted <strong>$23.6 billion<\/strong> in financing thanks, in particular, to the contribution of five banks: Indonesia&#8217;s Bank Rakyat Indonesia ($4.3 billion), Bank Mandiri ($2.7 billion), Bank Central Asia ($2.5) and Bank Negara ($1.4), and UK&#8217;s <strong>Barclays<\/strong> ($2 billion).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <strong>beef<\/strong> industry, the researchers explain, remains the main driver of deforestation in the Amazon. Source: Policy Assessment 2022 Forests &amp; Finance<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>From finance &#8220;dangerously inadequate&#8221; responses<\/h5>\n<p>Researchers developed <a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Forests-Finance-2021-Policy-Assessment-Methodology-210522.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a methodology<\/a> to analyze the behaviors of the <strong>top 200 banks<\/strong> and corporations involved in financing the commodity sector. The goal was to assign a score to assess the ability of financial institutions to manage and mitigate risks related to environmental, social and governance. The scale ranges from 0, total inadequacy, to 10, maximum capacity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Overall, the average score was just 1.6 out of 10 and an alarming <strong>59% of financial institutions<\/strong> scored under 1, indicating an abject <strong>failure <\/strong>to manage and mitigate Environment,&#8221; the authors explain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This latest assessment shows how big banks and institutional investors are blind to the urgency of the moment,&#8221; said <strong>Tom Picken<\/strong>, Forest and Finance Campaign Director with Rainforest Action Network and a founding member of the Forests &amp; Finance Coalition.
