{"id":21742,"date":"2022-11-18T11:00:44","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T10:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/?p=21742"},"modified":"2022-11-25T00:30:57","modified_gmt":"2022-11-24T23:30:57","slug":"deforestation-soy-corporation-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/deforestation-soy-corporation-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate commitments alone can&#8217;t stop soy-led deforestation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In 10 years, the moratorium on Brazilian soy derived from deforested land has saved just 2,300 km2 of forest, an international study says. &#8220;Supply chain governance should not be a substitute for state-led forest policies,&#8221; researchers explain<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commitments made by corporations not to purchase any soy produced on Brazilian <strong>Amazon<\/strong> deforested lands delivered negligible results as soy-driven tree cutting declined by just 1.6 percent between 2006 and 2015 which equates to a protected area of <strong>2,300 km2<\/strong>, &#8220;barely the size of Oxfordshire,&#8221; according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ac97f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> conducted by four different universities: Cambridge, Boston, Zurich and New York.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation, published in recent weeks in the journal Environmental Research Letters, was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, NASA&#8217;s Land-Cover and Land-Use Change program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"eUYTPODQJF\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-bolsonaro-land-grabbing\/\">Brazil, a law has deprived Indigenous people of 250,000 hectares in two years<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brazil, a law has deprived Indigenous people of 250,000 hectares in two years&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-bolsonaro-land-grabbing\/embed\/#?secret=tBFI3lTzGj#?secret=eUYTPODQJF\" data-secret=\"eUYTPODQJF\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A useless initiative without political support<\/h5>\n<p>The survey thus looked at the effects of the voluntary moratorium signed by some companies 16 years ago. The pledge not to purchase Amazonian-sourced <strong>soy<\/strong>, the researchers explain, had a limited effect because it did not affect the bulk of production, which actually lies outside the forest in the Cerrado region, a land rich in biodiversity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The researchers also underline how the <strong>limited results<\/strong> once again show the limited value of <strong>corporate initiatives<\/strong> that are not supported by crucial choices by the national governments.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Supply chain governance should not be a substitute for state-led forest policies, which are critical to enable zero deforestation monitoring and enforcement, have better potential to cover different crops, land users, and regions,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/deforestation-free-pledges-have-minimal-impact-in-Amazon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> <strong>Rachael Garrett<\/strong>, professor of Environmental Protection and Development at the Conservation Research Institute at the University of Cambridge and co-author of the report.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"sXRaPa8LRn\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-supreme-court-amazon\/\">Brazil Supreme Court restarts the Amazon rainforest Fund<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brazil Supreme Court restarts the Amazon rainforest Fund&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-supreme-court-amazon\/embed\/#?secret=fBcmMoSC81#?secret=sXRaPa8LRn\" data-secret=\"sXRaPa8LRn\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The study<\/h5>\n<p>By 2021, at least <strong>94 companies<\/strong> had made stringent commitments to eliminate any risk of contributing to deforestation from their supply chains. According to the study, however, many of these pledges did not actually worked. While many small and medium-sized companies in the food sector, did not even make formal commitments.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We found that in the <strong>Amazon<\/strong>, Soy Moratorium signatories that controlled the market caused a <strong>57% reduction<\/strong> in direct deforestation for soy from 2006 to 2015,&#8221; the research states. &#8220;In the Cerrado, if companies had implemented their ero-deforestation supply chain commitments with the same relative effectiveness as in the Amazon, deforestation for soy could have been <strong>reduced by 46%<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The commitment signed in 2006, the study also points out, excludes 50 percent of the forests suitable for growing the plant from any protection initiative.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Uade8UjB9b\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ft-amazon-brazil-funds\/\">Investment funds don&#8217;t leave Brazil despite Amazon deforestation, FT writes<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Investment funds don&#8217;t leave Brazil despite Amazon deforestation, FT writes&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ft-amazon-brazil-funds\/embed\/#?secret=uN9jhKFAY3#?secret=Uade8UjB9b\" data-secret=\"Uade8UjB9b\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The Brazilian survey<\/h5>\n<p>Latest study&#8217;s findings come alongside the conclusions of another <a href=\"https:\/\/unearthed.greenpeace.org\/2022\/02\/10\/deforestation-free-soya-farmers-amazon-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> conducted by Brazilian NGO Instituto Centro de Vida, <strong>Greenpeace<\/strong>&#8216;s Unearthed journalistic investigation center and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. The work, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/soya-moratorium-amazon-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> in February of this year, had shown how the development of the soy industry had been responsible for the clearing of <strong>1,180 square kilometers<\/strong> of forest.<\/p>\n<p>The destruction, the authors explained, had taken place in the state of Mato Grosso where, <strong>between 2009 and 2019<\/strong>, soy companies had opened up new space for other crops or to provide grazing land for <strong>livestock<\/strong>. &#8220;Most of this deforestation was illegal,&#8221; the study says. Researchers also criticized the Moratorium as it bans the sale of soybeans grown on land cleared after 2008 but places no restrictions on several products such as beef and other crops.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KRwOoDHevo\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/cote-d-ivoire-cocoa-deforestation\/\">Cocoa harvest and organized crime fuel C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s deforestation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cocoa harvest and organized crime fuel C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s deforestation&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/cote-d-ivoire-cocoa-deforestation\/embed\/#?secret=4VINURikpy#?secret=KRwOoDHevo\" data-secret=\"KRwOoDHevo\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Soy crops erase nearly five thousand km2 of forest each year<\/h5>\n<p>Demand for soybeans, the most recent study points out, is growing everywhere in the world. Most of the product &#8220;is consumed indirectly by humans: soybean is widely used as feed for factory-farmed chickens, pigs, fish and cattle.&#8221; Moreover, soy &#8220;accounts for <strong>around 27% of global vegetable oil production<\/strong>, and as a complete protein source it often forms a key part of vegetarian and vegan diets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This does not happen without consequences, of course. Indeed, the researchers report, &#8220;an estimated <strong>4,800 km2 of rainforest<\/strong> is cleared each year to grow soybeans&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the estimates, &#8220;If soybean traders actually implemented their global commitments for zero-deforestation production, current levels of forest clearance in <strong>Brazil<\/strong> could be reduced <strong>by around 40
