The worsening climate emergency and water crisis is an economic disaster for the affected regions<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Merciless weather continues to affect <strong>Iraq<\/strong> by fostering a <strong>drought<\/strong> that threatens the country&#8217;s agricultural yields. a notorius problem for local communities, who are forced to experience a drop in grain, fruit and vegetable harvests for the second year in a row with obvious economic consequences. The alarm comes from a <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/attachments\/3a22e7a4-5bd2-461a-b4e5-815662120257\/a-dry-horizon-2022%20%281%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> released by the <strong>Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)<\/strong> ahead of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (<strong>COP 27<\/strong>) in Egypt next month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing the continued damage from Iraq\u2019s climate and water crisis,\u201d said NRC\u2019s Iraq Country Director <strong>James Munn<\/strong>. \u201cPeople are witnessing their fertile land and crops vanish year after year. The lands that have fed a nation are drying up fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New findings from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRC_MiddleEast?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NRC_MiddleEast<\/a> shows drought destroying crops, livelihoods and incomes in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Iraq?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Iraq<\/a>, for a second year in a row. The survey was supplemented with eight key informant interviews and the analysis of four case studies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Of those that have rainfed crops, 88 percent stated that <strong>rainfall was not sufficient<\/strong> this season for their crops to thrive,&#8221; the Norwegian Council <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/iraq\/dry-horizon-iraqs-interlinked-drought-and-climate-crises-october-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To cope with the crisis, the research further notes, 28 percent of households in all governorates have begun <strong>purchasing drinking water<\/strong>, thus incurring additional expense. In the places most affected by the phenomenon, the survey reported, &#8220;one in three families in drought hotspots had to reduce the area of land that they plant, resulting in <strong>significant loss of crops and incomes<\/strong>.&#8221; Four out of 10 respondents also repoted harvesting &#8220;less wheat, barley, fruit, and vegetables this year than they did last year..&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Iraq&#8217;s water crisis has worsened in recent times due to <strong>record low rainfall<\/strong> and rising temperatures. Reduced river flow from neighboring countries and <strong>lack of investment<\/strong> and management at the national level have done the rest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Drought as a consequence of <strong>climate change <\/strong>is evident in many regions in the World. In recent weeks, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/WCE-NH-drought-scientific-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the <strong>World Weather Attribution<\/strong> (WWA), a group of scientists formed to study the incidence of extreme events, <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/climate-change-soil-drought\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted<\/a> how the climate crisis had made the record drought that hit Europe this summer <strong>at least 20 times<\/strong> more likely.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"h7grQjVvsX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/russia-drought-grain-ukraine\/\">Fears for global supply grow as drought hits crops in Russia<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Fears for global supply grow as drought hits crops in Russia&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/russia-drought-grain-ukraine\/embed\/#?secret=1Jijvz8jJW#?secret=h7grQjVvsX\" data-secret=\"h7grQjVvsX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>The economic implications<\/h5>\n<p>The economic consequences are equally troubling. &#8220;A worsening climate and water crisis spells disaster for regions that have long relied on agriculture as the <strong>principal source of income<\/strong> and livelihoods,&#8221; the NRC further explains. More than a third of respondents (38 percent) reported increased social tensions over competition for resources and jobs. Under current conditions, the researchers say, many members of Iraq&#8217;s farming communities will be forced to <strong>leave their land<\/strong> and move to urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Norwegian agency has appealed to the international community to provide more funding to Iraq with the goal of strengthening the country&#8217;s <strong>climate resilience<\/strong>. It also becomes necessary, NRC continues, &#8220;to increase Iraq\u2019s access to climate resilience funding and ramp up diplomatic efforts to ensure <strong>fair regional<\/strong> transboundary water flows to the Euphrates and Tigris rivers.&#8221; As well as increased investment in water management and infrastructure development by the government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iraqi farming communities experience a new decline in harvests due to drought, says Norwegian Refugee Council.
