However, the one decreed in recent days by the <strong>European Commission<\/strong> is at the same time a fundamental step on that path. Brussels has in fact certified the validity of the signatures collected, during 2021, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pan-europe.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PAN-Europe<\/a> (Pesticide Action Network)<\/strong>. A continental network that has brought together over <strong>200 organizations<\/strong> including environmental associations, biodistricts and operators in the agricultural and food sector. Objective: to launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/factsheets\/en\/sheet\/149\/european-citizens-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Citizens&#8217; Initiative<\/a> (ECI). Thanks to all organisations who helped to achieve this tremendous result\ud83c\udf3b\ud83c\udf40\ud83c\udf37<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/krt90WCfOi\">https:\/\/t.co\/krt90WCfOi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QV6bSyiRUf\">pic.twitter.com\/QV6bSyiRUf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PAN Europe (@EuropePAN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EuropePAN\/status\/1579457622629306368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 10, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>The requests of the signatories<\/h5>\n<p>Within it, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savebeesandfarmers.eu\/ita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposal<\/a>, called &#8220;Let&#8217;s save bees and farmers&#8221;, contains three requests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Progressively eliminate <strong>synthetic pesticides<\/strong> from 80% European agriculture by 2030 to zero them 5 years later.<\/li>\n<li>Restore <strong>natural ecosystems<\/strong> in agricultural areas by making agriculture a vector for the recovery of biodiversity.<\/li>\n<li>Reform the agricultural sector by giving priority to <strong>small-scale, diversified and sustainable agriculture,<\/strong> spreading a rapid increase in agroecological and biological practices and allowing independent training and research of farmers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The result achieved is a strong democratic signal for the EU and for national decision-makers who must take note of the will of the citizens and move away from toxic pesticides,&#8221; commented <strong>Martin Dermine,<\/strong> spokesperson for the popular proposal and executive director of PAN Europe. \u201cFarmers and science have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/tea-agroecology-biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>agroecology<\/strong><\/a> can feed the world without chemicals. The time has come for our politicians to stop listening to agri-food and start working for the future of our children &#8220;.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"lRu31\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Over half of the signatures come from Germany<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Reaching one million signatures now requires the European Commission to<strong> take a stand<\/strong> on the proposal. And the <strong>European Parliament<\/strong> will have to hold a public hearing on the matter. Although the popular proposal does not have the power to impose anything on the Community institutions, it is nevertheless a particularly significant achievement. To date, only <strong>6 other ICEs<\/strong> have in fact managed to obtain the number of signatures required to make them valid. EU rules establish that the million subscribers belong to at least a quarter of the member states. In the case of the PAN Europe initiative, <strong>all 27 EU countries<\/strong> were involved.<\/p>\n<p>But for the exploit the sensational results obtained in <strong>Germany<\/strong> (where over 526 thousand signatures were collected), the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> (almost 100 thousand) and <strong>France<\/strong> (almost 90 thousand) were decisive. Therefore, they avoid changes that would free our food system from addiction to chemicals \u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the reluctance of various EU countries, the need to block the use of pesticides that damage bees and other pollinators has over time been confirmed both at a scientific level and by international organizations. For example, a study by the University of Koblenz and Landau in Germany showed that, in the last 25 years, the toxicity of 381 pesticides to bees, other pollinating insects and aquatic invertebrates has more than doubled, despite the fact that German research has confirmed a decrease in the overall use of pesticides. However, <strong>neonicotinoids<\/strong>, insecticides chemically related to nicotine, particularly toxic for bees, have increased. Many pollinators are in fact closely correlated with the target species that pesticides aim to eradicate.
