With positive impacts on the economy and the climate<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Preserving the natural heritage of the <strong>Amazon<\/strong> forest, promoting the role of indigenous communities in safeguarding resources, restoring degraded areas and ensuring economic autonomy for local people. These are the goals of &#8220;I guardiani della foresta&#8221; (Guardians of the Forest), the project launched by Italian NGO <strong>Cesvi<\/strong> and the <strong>Lavazza Foundation<\/strong> in the Peruvian region of Madre de Dios. The initiative, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesvi.org\/appuntamenti\/fondazione-cesvi-e-fondazione-giuseppe-e-pericle-lavazza-a-terra-madre-con-i-i-guardiani-della-foresta-fondazione-cesvi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presented<\/a> in recent days at <a href=\"https:\/\/2022.terramadresalonedelgusto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terra Madre &#8211; Salone del Gusto 2022<\/a>, the traditional event organized by Slow Food in Turin, Italy, focuses &#8220;on promoting the production and marketing of local natural products such as Amazonian walnuts and the planting of fruit trees, which for indigenous communities represent a source of self-consumption and an opportunity for revenue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"xRMpqmIHDf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-bolsonaro-land-grabbing\/\">Brazil, a law has deprived Indigenous people of 250,000 hectares in two years<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brazil, a law has deprived Indigenous people of 250,000 hectares in two years&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-bolsonaro-land-grabbing\/embed\/#?secret=SNZGr8NwFJ#?secret=xRMpqmIHDf\" data-secret=\"xRMpqmIHDf\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Environmental and social sustainability<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;In the Amazon, forest protection involves both two environmental and social sustainability,&#8221; says <strong>Veronica Rossi<\/strong>, Lavazza Group&#8217;s Sustainability Manager. The intercation between these two dimensions becomes clear when looking at the properties of the key resource at the center of the project.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Capable of growing up to 50 meters tall, living up to 700 years and storing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesvi.org\/appuntamenti\/fondazione-cesvi-e-fondazione-giuseppe-e-pericle-lavazza-a-terra-madre-con-i-i-guardiani-della-foresta-fondazione-cesvi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 64,000 kg of CO2<\/a> over its lifetime, the <strong>walnut<\/strong> tree plays an important role in climate mitigation. In addition to representing, along with other fruit trees, both a source of self-consumption and an opportunity for <strong>income<\/strong> for local people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The project aimed to revitalize the supply chain in the Amazonian walnut production sector,&#8221; explains <strong>Roberto Vignola<\/strong>, deputy general manager and head of communications and fundraising at Cesvi. &#8220;Supporting this activity and above all guaranteeing a fair price on the market, in fact, means preventing the search for other sources of income that are harmful to the environment, including illegal mining.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gmGPMCINvX8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>The role of the local community in Amazonia<\/h5>\n<p>The development of illicit mining is still a widespread phenomenon in the country. &#8220;Over the last decade, <strong>Peru<\/strong>\u2019s fast-growing economy was fueled by high prices in the mining, oil, and gas sectors\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/peru\/our-work\/illegal-gold-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> USAID. \u201cAs gold prices climbed, <strong>illegal alluvial gold mining<\/strong> expanded into sensitive ecosystems, including protected areas and indigenous lands.&#8221; Organized crime obviously plays its part. But also behind the illicit extraction sometimes is the lack of alternative economic opportunities that drives even small family groups to engage in mining operations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this scenario, however, local communities can also be an <strong>effective safeguard <\/strong>against illicit resource exploitation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Between 2018 and 2020, for example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/indigenous-drones-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">monitoring program<\/a> conducted by 80 native communities in the Loreto region of northern Peru, with the support of three organizations (Rainforest Foundation US, World Resources Institute, and ORPIO) resulted in the <strong>halving of illegal logging<\/strong> in just one year.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"cmgABVAFRh\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-amazon-spending-forest\/\">Protecting the Amazon would require minimal spending, a study says<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Protecting the Amazon would require minimal spending, a study says&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/brazil-amazon-spending-forest\/embed\/#?secret=cAn1oTQYaZ#?secret=cmgABVAFRh\" data-secret=\"cmgABVAFRh\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>A strong market<\/h5>\n<p>The Guardians of the Forest project has been developed on more than 40 thousand hectares and has led to the planting of about <strong>5 thousand trees<\/strong>, contributing to the development of a supply chain characterized by great potential. &#8220;At the moment ten families belonging to four native communities are involved, but next year we hope to involve 20 families,&#8221; explains <strong>Davide Belloni<\/strong>, Cesvi coordinator for Latin America, emphasizing the strong vitality of the Amazon walnut market.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is a highly valued product, especially in Asia,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;Its <strong>nutritional and antioxidant<\/strong> properties encourage its use in both the food and <strong>cosmetic<\/strong> industries.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The initiative&#8217;s promoters, in any case, are aware of the need to <strong>diversify residents&#8217; income opportunities<\/strong> also given the seasonality of the harvest. &#8220;Walnut is the main resource but the forest also offers other products,&#8221; Belloni says. Finally, strengthening the local supply chain should go hand in hand with reducing the use of intermediaries in export activities.
