One trait that can attract public and private funds<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Marginal farms located in the <strong>UK<\/strong>&#8216;s poorest areas could be the ones benefiting most from public and private funding associated with <strong>government programs<\/strong> and carbon market, a <a href=\"https:\/\/eciu.net\/media\/press-releases\/2022\/3-1bn-prize-for-small-marginal-farms-tackling-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new analysis<\/a> published in recent weeks by <strong>Energy &amp; Climate Intelligence Unit<\/strong>, a London-based nonprofit organization, has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>According to Energy &amp; Climate, in fact, these farms &#8220;tend to be in areas of great potential for storing carbon, such as upland <strong>peatlands<\/strong>, described as the UK\u2019s \u2018rainforests\u2019 because they are such carbon rich habitats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aA1ExuRDBK\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-credits\/\">Brussels is working on carbon credits, as certification framework is still undefined<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Brussels is working on carbon credits, as certification framework is still undefined&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/carbon-credits\/embed\/#?secret=D9fEcgOjhE#?secret=aA1ExuRDBK\" data-secret=\"aA1ExuRDBK\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Combined benefits at \u00a33.1 billion per year<\/h5>\n<p>The study, which focused on 25 different British constituencies, found that in the observed areas farms already benefit significantly from <strong>government incentives<\/strong> to support so-called &#8220;<strong>environmental measures<\/strong>.&#8221; Which already secure proportionately 50% more funding.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For this reason, small businesses in the sector are also &#8220;well placed to benefit from private investment from companies keen to offset emissions, which could create a <strong>\u00a3700 million a year<\/strong> market for storing carbon in vegetation and soils.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adding this figure to the amount of public funding available for such measures &#8211; set to rise to <strong>\u00a32.4 billion<\/strong> by 2028 &#8211; means a total public\/private benefit of \u00a33.1 billion per year.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"G0U9qljw9F\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-russia-black-soil\/\">War and climate change threaten Ukraine&#8217;s &#8216;magic&#8217; soil<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;War and climate change threaten Ukraine&#8217;s &#8216;magic&#8217; soil&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/ukraine-russia-black-soil\/embed\/#?secret=S3YLEaRR1Q#?secret=G0U9qljw9F\" data-secret=\"G0U9qljw9F\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Three public environmental programs<\/h5>\n<p>Under the so-called Agricultural Transition Plan, the <strong>British government<\/strong> has introduced three new incentives for farms that implement good environmental practices. Among them is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/a-summary-of-the-sfi-in-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Farming Incentive<\/a> designed to help farmers manage land with the goal of improving food production under sustainable schemes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Operators, in effect, are paid as they succeed in improving water quality, protecting <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>, mitigating the effects of climate change, and ensuring animal welfare.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The incentive scheme, in particular, aims to &#8220;encourage actions that improve <strong>soil health<\/strong>, recognise how moorland provides benefits to the public (public goods), improve animal health and welfare by helping farmers with the costs of veterinary advice for livestock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Q6FHsBZJdi\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/torba-proposta-divieto-giardini\/\">The UK proposal: &#8220;No more peat for gardening&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;The UK proposal: &#8220;No more peat for gardening&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/torba-proposta-divieto-giardini\/embed\/#?secret=XoW3C7Q8Tu#?secret=Q6FHsBZJdi\" data-secret=\"Q6FHsBZJdi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Clear rules are needed for the carbon market<\/h5>\n<p>If the government program proves effective, smaller businesses could gain crucial support to overcome the serious difficulties they face today. Indeed, the ability to <strong>diversify revenues<\/strong> &#8211; core business, government incentives and eventual private funds &#8211; is one solution to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/microbes-fertilizer-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soaring energy and fertilizer costs<\/a> due to the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The role of private players appears to be crucial. Companies in other sectors called upon to<strong> offset their emissions<\/strong> may look with interest at the opportunities offered by farms located in the most marginal territories.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These farms, in fact, are not very productive &#8211; &#8220;The least productive 20% of farmland in the UK produces <strong>just 3% of calories<\/strong>&#8221; the analysis notes &#8211; but they also manage soils with the greatest carbon <strong>storage<\/strong> potential. This is also why clear rules are currently needed.
