From the World Economic Forum, five strategies to counter land erosion<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>drought<\/strong> wave &#8211; one of the worst ever recorded &#8211; that has hit Europe this summer has strongly highlighted a too often underestimated problem: the consequences for <strong>soil<\/strong> health. As they become drier and drier, the Continent&#8217;s soils are experiencing increasing <strong>erosion<\/strong>, a phenomenon that is also exacerbated by heavy rains that break long periods with no precipitation. Thus generating a vicious cycle.<\/p>\n<p>In the last weeks, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>World Economic Forum<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/08\/drought-five-ways-soil-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> which includes\u00a0five proposals to counter the deterioration process. &#8220;If implemented and maintained,&#8221; the organization writes, &#8220;these strategies can have lasting additional benefits for soil fertility, biodiversity, and slowing climate change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mm8KuzMVSi\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/somalia-deforestation-acacia\/\">After decades of deforestation and drought, Somalia tries to change its course<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;After decades of deforestation and drought, Somalia tries to change its course&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/somalia-deforestation-acacia\/embed\/#?secret=fh5LBnuUnh#?secret=mm8KuzMVSi\" data-secret=\"mm8KuzMVSi\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Drought threatens Europe<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;A soil normally acts like a sponge which <strong>soaks up moisture<\/strong> when it rains,&#8221; writes the Forum. &#8220;Having been baked for weeks by intense heat with little respite, soil surfaces have hardened,&#8221; the Forum writes. &#8220;As a result, the soil\u2019s infiltration capacity (the maximum rate at which soils <strong>can absorb moisture<\/strong>) has diminished. If rain falls at such an intensity that this rate is exceeded, the water will run off the soil surface, potentially triggering flash floods and other hazards downslope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The observation, made from satellite data, refers to recent experience in the United Kingdom. But the problem affects the entire Continent. According to the report <a href=\"https:\/\/joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu\/jrc-news\/droughts-europe-july-2022-almost-half-eu-uk-territory-risk-2022-07-18_en\">Drought in Europe \u2013 July 2022<\/a>\u201d published by the EU Commission&#8217;s <strong>Joint Research Centre<\/strong>, the presence of &#8220;alarming&#8221; drought levels affects 46 percent of the European territory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_20007\" style=\"width: 1344px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20007\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20008\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Schermata-2022-07-31-alle-14.24.24.png\" alt=\"Situazione della siccit\u00e0 in Europa, 1a decade di Luglio 2022. SOURCE: EU Joint Research Center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Italy, in particular, the amount of rainfall recorded in the first five months of the year amounts to <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/filiera-agricola\/siccita-acque-reflue-agricoltura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">less than half<\/a> the historical average. With a deficit of about <strong>40 billion cubic meters<\/strong>. The good news, as mentioned, is that-at least for soil-there are some good practices that can make a difference. These are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5>Don&#8217;t leave soils bare<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8220;A bare soil is particularly vulnerable to erosion,&#8221; writes World Econmic Forim. Extreme heat also &#8220;can make some harvests come early, leaving soils bare for longer.&#8221; That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s helpful to target <strong>cover crops<\/strong> such as brassicas, legumes and grasses to protect the soil from the effects of rain. It also replenishes carbon and providing food and habitat for wildlife.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h5>Adapt tillage practices<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Tilling the soil too vigorously can damage its structure by limiting its resistance to erosion and its ability to drain water. &#8220;Shifting towards <strong>less intensive<\/strong> tillage practices \u2013 reduced or zero tillage farming \u2013 has been shown to be effective at curbing soil erosion,&#8221; writes the Forum.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"m2CxMSzSoq\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-carbon-invertebrates-soil\/\">Drought, invertebrates, and carbon: the vicious cycle affecting soil and climate<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Drought, invertebrates, and carbon: the vicious cycle affecting soil and climate&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/drought-carbon-invertebrates-soil\/embed\/#?secret=smWB0ipwvc#?secret=m2CxMSzSoq\" data-secret=\"m2CxMSzSoq\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h5>Beware of the effects of grazing<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Overgrazing is known to contribute to excessive vegetation reduction. In addition, the presence of animals can also compact the soil <strong>by reducing its absorption capacity<\/strong>. Building level steps in the slope intended for cultivation &#8211; the so-called <strong>terracing<\/strong> practice &#8211; helps reduce water runoff and sediment erosion. Finally, the strips &#8220;feed and shelter <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/ambiente\/recupero-terreni-incolti-api-fioraia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pollinating insects<\/a>, enriching a farm\u2019s biodiversity.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The combination of long-term drought and subsequent heavy rains is putting a strain on Europe&#8217;s dry soils.
