Without a change of direction, 8 percent of the world&#8217;s population could still face hunger in 2030<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Matteo Cavallito<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soil plays &#8220;a vital role&#8221; in <strong>food security<\/strong> and can help end world hunger. &#8220;But only if we address soil global threats, including nutrient imbalance.&#8221; <strong>FAO<\/strong> Director-General, <strong>Qu Dongyu<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/newsroom\/detail\/soils-where-food-begins\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> this at the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/events\/detail\/symposium-soils-for-nutrition\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Symposium on Soils for Nutrition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event was dedicated to the issue of <strong>soil fertility<\/strong> and the need to ensure more nutritious food production in current troubled scenario. Indeed, besides chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/bangladesh-fao-micronutrients-fortified-rice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">micronutrient shortages<\/a>, the dangerous growth of famines is also worrysome. As the trend has reversed in recente years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">95% of the food we eat wouldn&#39;t exist without soils. And more than 90% of  the benefits of soils have yet to be discovered. <\/p>\n<p>Here&#39;s how to nurture and harness this bounty \ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hcvEKogOog\">https:\/\/t.co\/hcvEKogOog<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Soils4Nutrition?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Soils4Nutrition<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3uQf6fJG57\">pic.twitter.com\/3uQf6fJG57<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; FAO in Africa (@FAOAfrica) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAOAfrica\/status\/1551900140700573699?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h5>Global food crisis is getting worse<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;After remaining relatively unchanged since 2015,&#8221; according to the recent FAO report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/cc0639en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022<\/a>, &#8220;the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) jumped from 8.0 to 9.3 percent from 2019 to 2020 and rose at a slower pace in 2021 <strong>to 9.8 percent<\/strong>\u201d. Moreover, \u201c<strong>Between 702 and 828 million<\/strong> people were affected by hunger in 2021. The number has grown by about 150 million since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic \u2013 103 million more people between 2019 and 2020 and 46 million more in 2021.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Without a change of direction, says FAO, there&#8217;s the risk that <strong>8 percent of the world&#8217;s population<\/strong> &#8211; or 670 million people, will still suffer hunger in 2030.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The problem, however, is much wider. Even taking into account moderate food insecurity, the amount of humans forced to deal with some sort of food shortage reaches 2.3 billion. Meanwhile, there are <strong>3.1 billion individuals<\/strong> who cannot afford an healthy diet. A phenomenon that directly impacts the quantity and quality of food given that as many as 15 of the 18 essential plant nutrients always come from the soil.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAn example of naturally fertile soils are <a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/agricultural-industry\/china-black-soil-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black soils<\/a> found in mid-latitudes of North America, Eurasia, and South America\u201d, according to FAO report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc0900en\/cc0900en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soils for nutrition: state of the art<\/a>, launched at the Global Symposium. \u201cIn contrast, other regions have naturally <strong>low soil fertility<\/strong>, low SOM content and high acidity\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Today, says FAO, black soils generate about two-thirds of sunflower seeds, <strong>30 percent of wheat and 26 percent of potatoes<\/strong> consumed worldwide. The global food supply chain, in any case, is still affected by critical factors such as growing inequality, land degradation, pollution and loss of biodiversity. In 2010, cropland plants globally are estimated to having absorbed <strong>73 million tons of nitrogen<\/strong> compared with 161 million tons of nitrogen inputs. This gap highlights the poor efficiency of fertilization practices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;N use efficiency has been estimated to have decreased f<strong>rom 53 percent in the 1960s to 44 percent in the 2010s<\/strong>&#8220;,says FAO. &#8220;This means that nearly half of the N applied is unused by plants in the year it is applied<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No less problematic is the case with <strong>phosphorus<\/strong>. P deficit still prevails <strong>in 32 percent of cropland and 43 percent of grazing land<\/strong> globally. Some regions in America and Europe have negative balances i.e., they lose more phosphorus than they take up. Other areas, such as Asia, Oceania and Australia, by contrast, show a net accumulation.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"cMOJEzvGKa\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/healthy-soil-official-definition\/\">What is healthy soil? In most of sub-Saharan Africa, says the UN organization, access to <strong>mineral nitrogen fertilizers<\/strong> averages about 8-10 kg per hectare per year. In economically advanced countries it reaches ten times that amount. As a result, some areas experience <strong>nutrient underutilization<\/strong> resulting in low yields and significant vulnerability to food crises. In other areas, by contrast, the soil suffers the effects of nutrient overuse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <strong>excessive use or the misuse<\/strong> of fertilizers also have negative effects on ecosystems and contribute to climate change, including through biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions,&#8221; FAO explains. &#8220;Translating these impacts into <strong>economic losses<\/strong> totals approximately <strong>$200 billion annually<\/strong>\u201d. The costs of damage to human health and the environment, then, amount to between \u201c$400\u2013$4,000 billion annually.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5mtWJDyoST\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-fao-fertilizers\/\">UNEP urges a new fertilizers policy for a sustainable agriculture<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;UNEP urges a new fertilizers policy for a sustainable agriculture&#8221; &#8212; Re Soil Foundation\" src=\"https:\/\/resoilfoundation.org\/en\/articles\/agricolture-fao-fertilizers\/embed\/#?secret=iuwKMGKCZE#?secret=5mtWJDyoST\" data-secret=\"5mtWJDyoST\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h5>Organic matter and circular bioeconomy are the solutions<\/h5>\n<p>It is no coincidence that back in 2019 the FAO published T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/ca5253en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he international Code of Conduct for the sustainable use and management of fertilizers<\/a>. The guidelines developed by the organization, in particular, are based on the so-called <strong>4Rs<\/strong>: right source at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These <strong>recommendations<\/strong>, along with those provided in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/documents\/card\/en\/c\/0549ec19-2d49-4cfb-9b96-bfbbc7cc40bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management <\/a>report published in 2016, are considered essential for addressing the set of complex problems affecting agricultural soils around the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;We must use these tools and seek cross-cutting solutions that embrace nature-positive solutions, such as bio-fertilizers, increased soil organic matter, and crop diversification,&#8221; said Qu. Moreover, we need to &#8220;optimize technological tools for more precise use of fertilizers, and promote the <strong>circular economy<\/strong>&#8220;. Finally, said FAO Director-General, &#8220;We also need to support enhanced soil information and monitoring systems, harmonized soil analysis protocols, fertilizer quality assessment, and empower farmers to adopt good practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Soil is responsible for the production of 95 percent of our food, says FAO during the Global Symposium 2022.
